In an earlier thread about 9mm, someone managed to score 1k for around 38 cents a round.
I haven't been shooting all that long but I remember a similar situation when I bought my first .22lr maybe 8 years ago. For a long time I could only get a box or two at a time of the most expensive ammo available.
Three years ago I bought three cases of Aguila Super Extra for a total of about $650 including shipping, which works out to about $22 per brick and 4.4 cents per round. Later on it showing up for $18 per brick in retail stores. I still have almost two thirds of that batch plus some other stuff so I'm probably good until 2025 or so.
If you're patient, prices will come down. If you're willing to pay any price in order to shoot, there are sellers who will be happy to accommodate you.
Right now I can't get lead-free varmint ammunition and I don't expect to be able to until next year. Just as well. The squirrels have learned how far most of us can shoot accurately and they keep their distance accordingly.
