Default WTS reading on CA topics, mllitary subjects

These are all used books, but in excellent condition. PRICES INCLUDE SHIPPING to CONUS Zip codes.

To reserve a book, put an "I'll take book(s) #___" ON THIS THREAD. Then I'll acknowledge your order on the thread, mark the book sold (SPF) on the ad, and PM you my mailing address for payment.

I accept cash, personal checks made out to me, and all money orders made out to me. I don't do PayPal, credit cards, or online digital payments. (Old school--"deferred gratification" is what I still do--books are worth waiting for!). I do my best to ship the same day I get payment.

TAKE $1 OFF THE PRICE OF ANY BOOK OR BOOKS YOU ORDER AFTER THE FIRST ONE (I get a little break on the shipping cost of multiple books, so I kick a little back).

California-related titles

1) "Winter of Entrapment: A New Look at The Donner Party," by Joseph A. King. The tragedy of the Donner Party has been both covered up and also studied carefully for a long time--an iconic tale of horror and heroism. 'Til now the best study was by George R. Stewart, his well-written and researched "Ordeal by Hunger" last revised in 1960. But Stewart didn't have full access to the extensive Donner Party-related archives in the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley, which were not fully processed until after his death. This history fills in some of the blanks in Stewart's knowledge and calls out some of the mistakes he made due to them. And it focuses on the anti-Irish and anti-German prejudice of the time of the tragedy--the anti-Catholic spin put on it by the "Know-Nothing" party's adherents in the mid-19th Century, which influenced the narrative, especially in the press. Quality PB 279 pp. exc/new cond, illus w/b/w photos and repros of original documents. $5

2) "Gold Rush Glimpses III: Outlaws, Inspirations, and Amusements" by Craig and Franklin MacDonald. Short articles on Western gold rushes, mainly in CA and NV. Eleven are on well-known outlaws of the time; eight are on inspiring individuals who got their starts in the gold fields(ever hear of Levi's or Macy's?); eight are on amusing yourself in a "boom town"-- "watering holes," music venues, and a "grub guide;" one is on boomtown headstone epitaphs. Softbound 152 pp. 10x7" format exc. cond. illus by drawings and watercolor painted images by prized Western artists Bill Anderson and Milford Zornes. $6

3) "In Condor Country: A Portrait of a Landscape, Its Denizens, and Its Defenders" by David Darlington. Lots of CA outdoorsmen detest the California Condor as the cause of our current lead ammo ban. This book probably isn't for them. But if you love CA's wildlands, especially those from the Grapevine to SLO between the ocean and the San Joaquin Valley--Condor AND Earthquake country--you'll like this book. HB 245 pp. exc. reading cond. w/map and index. $5

4) "Young Men and Fire" by Norman MacClean. Relevant to our current situation, this nonfiction book by the author of "A River Runs Through It" is about the tragedy of the Mann Gulch Fire where fifteen elite USFS smokejumpers died in service on August 5, 1949 in Montana. A reality that is still very much with us. HB U. Chicago Press, 310 pp. exc. cond. illus w/b/w photos, maps. $5

5) "Brown Acres: An Intimate History of the Los Angeles Sewers" by Anna Sklar. As your crap goes, so goes your city. If it stays, you die. Where it goes and how makes one of the big differences between the Dark Ages and now. But it's a subject that seldom gets "aired".... This book does that, from the "zanja" ditches of the Pueblo de Los Angeles to the development of a modern system that helps keep SoCal's "s--t together." Quality PB 232 pp. newocnd illus w/historic new condition illus w/historic b/w photos, maps, and index. An "infrastructure classic"! $5

6) "Fish Have No Hands: Catching Tons of Fish in Bays and Estuaries" by Mike Gardner. Professional angler and coastal fishing guide gives his secrets for inshore salt water fishing in SoCal. Many of these techniques could be adapted to any coastline, but the species he concentrates his tricks on are all SoCal and Baja fish. Softbound 167 pp. new cond. 7 1/2"x9" format illus w/many b/w photos and rig diagrams. $5

Military-related Topics

7) "Knife Throwing: Sport. Survival, Defense" by Blackie Collins. Classic by one of the grand old names in the world of fighting knives. Practical instruction with practical cautions. (I would caution that if you have a Blackie Collins blade, DON'T throw it--auction it!). Softbound 31 pp. published by Knife World Magazine. exc. cond illus w/b/w photos and diagrams. $4

8) Three book set of Barnes and Noble "military hardware" handbooks: "Armored Fighting Vehicles" by Philip Trewitt, "Twentieth Century Artillery" by Ian Hogg, and "Battleships and Carriers" by Steve Crawford. These books are all in the same format: Hardbound, 7x5" 325 pp. with an intro on the subject, and then single-page entries arranged by type (and period of each model) with a color plate illustrating an important model of the type. The armor book covers mainly the beginnings of armored vehicles in WWI to the latest types of the 20th century (some still in use). The artillery book has similar coverage ("French 75" to late Soviet and NATO tube and rocket artillery). The Battleship and Carrier book covers the whole history of battleships from sail to the Gulf War and the carrier from its WWI infancy to the Gulf War(ships are listed alphabetically by name). All books have histories of development of types, specs of typical models, crew number, dimensions, armament, country of origin, and color illustrations. Excellent condition with no loose or missing pages or markings, and clean undamaged covers. A neat little reference set. $10 for all three, shipped.

9) "Jane's AFV Recognition Manual, 2nd Ed" by Christopher Foss. From the famous British military hardware reference publisher that began with "Jane's Fighting Ships" after WWI. This covers the world's armored vehicles from MBTs, light and amphibious tanks, armored and scout cars, tracked and wheeled APCs, tank destroyers, SP artillery pieces, AA vehicles including missile batteries, to specialist vehicles such as armored bulldozers, bridging systems, and tank recovery vehicles. Covers the (few) WWII types still in service and most of the post-WWII vehicles developed up to and slightly after the First Gulf War, most still in service. Detailed histories of development and deployment, over 480 new photos and drawings. Quality softbound 595 pp 8"x4" format exc. cond illus w/b/w photos, line drawings, charts and tables. $8 shipped.

10) "Tupolev: The Man and His Aircraft" by Paul Duffy and Andrei Kandalov.
Complete biography of the famous Soviet designer and his creations, including his design of the deadly WWII Tu-2 bomber while imprisoned by Stalin for treason! From the huge 4-motor TB-3 heavy bomber first flown in 1925 to his SST, the Tu-144, the first SST to fly, and including the Tu-142 'Bear" bomber familiar to NATO aircrew who patrol the Arctic and other strategic areas, and the "Fiddler" fighter and "Blackjack" bomber that gave NATO fits for while. Also covers his many airliner and transport designs and the motor torpedo boats he designed which were used by the Soviets in WWII. HB 233 pp. 8"x10" format exc/new cond except for two library stamps inside cover, illus w/MANY b/w photos and drawings, charts, production and modification lists, specification charts, lists of world records held by Tupolev aircraft, specs of his torpedo boats, and production figures of all his models. $8 shipped.

11) "The Counterterrorism Handbook, 2nd Ed." by Frank Baltz, Kenneth Dudowitz, and David Schultz. A volume of the CRC Press' "Practical Aspects of Criminal and Forensic Investigations" series. Sections on "The Common Aspects of Terrorism," "Pre-Incident Planning," "Bomb Defense Planning," "Hostage Situations," Defining Terrorism," "Bomb Incidents," "Post-blast Incidents," "Hostage/Kidnapping Aftermaths," "Interviewing Victims," "Role of Commander," "The Command Post." HB 285 pp. new cond. illus w/b/w photos, diagrams. $5

12) "Understanding Terror Networks" by Marc Sageman. Sageman, a forensic psychiatrist who worked extensively with the anti-Soviet "mujahadin" for the US government, was in at the start of the worldwide Salafist Islamic jihad. This book is primarily about Islamic fundamentalist networks, but its principles apply to any widespread terrorist movement. HB 229 pp. exc/nw condl w/glossary of foriegn terms, bibliography and index. $5

Thanks for reading this long post! Remember to take $1 off the price of the second and any other books you may order.
