Default Ruger Marlin 45-70 trapper

Just picked up this pair today. Consecutive serial numbers so how could I say no?!? These are part of Cabelas Black Friday week sale and they had 12 of them at my local store. Mondays give an additional $120 off if you use your Cabelas card so they were a little over $1000 otd each. Can?t wait to shoot them

I acquired the XS rail with sights for my RuMar Trapper.
Mounted a Burris 2-7X IER optic, using Leupold QR rings.
It shoots my cast bullets very well. Good truck rifle.

Loading for the .45-70 is easy. It is like an enlarged straight-wall pistol case.

I just picked up some +p for mine (because it wouldn?t kick enough with non +p).

I wonder how it would do in my Trapdoor, haha!!

I guess that +P makes them go a bit faster...

Some of those generate a bit of recoil.
I?ve loaded a batch using some of that AA2015 (47.5 grains) I got from you some time back. It pushes a 350 grain plated flat-point to 1,650 fps out of my RuMar Trapper. That one is a bit snappy, but accurate. If I had to use the Trapper for a social event, that would be my preferred loading. Trick would be to get multiple bad actors lined up for some serious multi-casualty hole punching.
Would also be fun to load some shot capsules to see what type of pattern one could get.

You might see as much as a 300 fps drop in speed from the 16.5" barrel, if the barrel Underwood used was 24"... but if it were a 18.5" that they used, then you might see 2600... who knows.

Considering a typical thirty aught-six 220 grain spitzer is launched +/- 2400 fps... the fact that this is of considerably greater diameter, AND another 300 fps... holy smokes. Yeah.

I'm a traditionalist, liking original and heavier bullet weights so I favor using 400/405 grain slugs in my .45-70, but mostly loaded to lighter pressures for general practice and plinking (blowing large holes through, or whatever it is to smithereens).

I still marvel at the Garrett Cartridges loads used by Vince Lupo and his Marlin 1895 guide guns to take the African Dangerous Six... a 540 grain .458" hardcast flat point to 1550 fps...

Keep in mind they used to take buffalo and bear with much less powerful 45-70 loads back in the day. It doesn't take max loads to take down dangerous/big game. The super hot stuff of today is mostly overkill and beats the snot out of you.

Agreed!!

When I?m ringing steel with my trapdoor, there?s nothing quite like that DING!! you get with a 400g bullet, haha!!

These +p?s were just for fun. Saw them when buying a bunch of 10mm ammo on Black Friday pricing and couldn?t resist adding them to the cart
