Default Mini 14 becoming C&R this year?

How many were made in early years? I just realized that the first year of them are C&R now (introduced in 1973, right?), and more will be moving forward. This is exciting.

Based on that the 180-series rifles were at almost 60,000 rifles by the beginning of 1977, and started in 1974.

Is there anyone else out there that prefers the out of the box Mini-14 over a neutered compliant AR-15?

Anyone?

Yes!

i also use the mini 14 as an example of why "assault weapons" are really cosmetic when I am talking to someone who doesnt really know a lot about firearms.

Those who call the Mini-14 crap are purely ignorant. While the AR-15 is an amazing rifle and takes full advantage of modern-day technology in advances, the Mini-14 is a proven Workhorse. For those who want to go right to the accuracy card, problem has been more than solved with the taper Barrel as well as an aftermarket Barrel stabilizer.

Beautiful rifle. I?ve always wanted one since watching the A-Team as a kid. The ranch rifle appealed to me the most. Never did get one. Don?t need one but maybe one day I can trade something for one.

Actually, the only C&R rifle would be the one produced in 1972, as it has to be *OVER* 50 years old, and unless one can PROVE the actual month it was made it does not qualify.

EXAMPLE: A person born in December 2002 will not be 21 until December 2023 and therefore not legally drink alcohol until their birthday has passed.
Same concept.

Can a rifle be considered C&R if the series is still in production?

Yes; the two ways for a firearm to be considered C&R is to either be at least 50 years old or be named by the ATF as a C&R firearm (I believe the newest firearms that qualify for C&R status are the Czechoslovakian CZ 82 pistols made up until 1992). Whether they are still in current production is irrelevent provided they meet one of those two thresholds.

Just as one easy to note example; S&W still makes a wide variety of revolvers today that they also were producing back in 1972; so long as you can prove the example you are purchasing was manufactured 50+ years ago, it qualifies as a C&R.

Rifles made in 1973 would be C&R eligible in 2024.

Or do the Mini-14 serials reflect month, day and year of production?

Alot of the S&W commemoratives are C&R eligible and relatively new. I have the 544 and 25 commemoratives and they're specifically listed. Same for Winchester too.

Me too. I love my Mini-14. I've sold many of my guns, bought more, but one gun I'll never sell is my 25-year-old wood stock Ranch.

I put a whole bunch of rounds through my pristine old stainless 188 over the weekend on steel targets at ~100. Forgot how much fun that old thing is. Now I want another.

Mine is a 196 series stainless Ranch Rifle. I put it in a Hogue overmolded stock. It has always been a decent shooter for my needs - plinking or called coyotes. I get groups under 2 inches with cheap Tula or Wolf ammo. Better with handloads, but I never been obsessed with tiny groups from this rifle, Just watch where the cases are being ejected. A steel case will crack a windshield if fired off the hood of a truck....as my son demonstrated.

My previous truck had dents from PSL casings, and a coworker broke his windshield after I warned him not to stand where he was.
