Shotgun and rifle in 30 days?

Hello everyone,
I apologize in advance if this specific topic has been brought up already. I wasn’t quite clear if I understood the New California law about purchasing one fire or a month? Having a brief conversation with the salesman at my local big five sporting goods. He mentioned that if I buy a shotgun or 22 rimfire rifle, and then wanted to purchase for example a savage 308 rifle at the same time that would be OK?
Just for clarity purposes, whether I buy a shotgun or any other long gun. It’s still a one firearm per 30 day. Correct? For some reason I was understanding that it is OK to buy two long guns at the same time as long as one was a shotgun or a rimfire rifle. Thank you so much in advance everyone :-)
