I'm happy with respectable. There are bigger bucks up there but it's a long trip and it's cold.

Sorry about my odd humor.

Thanks,
I caught that on a live mackerel and a #10 Jobu swiveled hook around 01:00 in the morning. I caught a second Grouper about 20 minutes after that one. It was a little smaller.

Talk about some world class fish fillets off that Grouper.

This is the picture of the smaller one.

Wait, aren't you the guy that started the thread asking about "ever feel like you are doing everything wrong hunting?"

Congratulations on getting your first!

Default First Buck

IMG_3400.jpg
IMG_3415.jpg
IMG_3414.jpg
IMG_3416.jpg

Harvested my first buck in A-zone, August 2023; working public land in the backcountry. 7mm-08 120 grain Barnes TTSX, Ruger American 22 inch barrel in a Magpul Hunter Stock, at 43 yards.

This was my 4th consecutive season for a fork-horned buck in A-zone. Failed every season before this one. I am the only hunter in my family (that I know of so far). I did not have anyone who could take me out to the field to teach me how to hunt. For fishing; it was a whole different story.

I started learning to hunt by myself with just a 12 gauge for cottontail and jackrabbits. I was sneered upon for the jackrabbits; even though I checked the liver to make sure there were no tulemaria white spots.

Driving the buck home was nice.

But it has definitely also caused some sides to develop within certain individual immediate and certain individual extended family members; when they found out that I brought home a buck. It was different because it was not just a cotton tail rabbit, jackrabbit, California gray tree squirrel, California valley quail, or mourning dove. I brought home something bigger.

There were certain family members who were excited for me because it was considered exotic meat we can not readily buy at the grocery store. You know I had to 'hook them up' (gifting) without them even asking.

Then, there were certain individual family members, even though they are not vegans or vegetarians, it felt like they built a resentment or grudge against me for going into the wilderness, into another living creatures home to kill it; for food. When the topic of science based wildlife management, conservation, and preservation was discussed; they think I should I have let nature do its own thing. Why kill an animal, when you can just buy meat from the grocery store?

My mother even had a couple of her friends tell her; ?can you ask your son not to do that anymore??

I hope one day I will also be able to harvest a California public land black bear or wild pig. I also hope to one day be drawn for the elk tag drawings I have been filing for each year. Next year, I hope to harvest another A-zone buck.
