I will work on my loads in the 43gr-ish range. Thanks Randall, 45gr-ish just look too dangerous.

thanks,
how come you are using federal primers? I only have CCI #34s right now, is this too much of a primer for these kind of loads? Should I use benchrest primers? standard?

#34 is mil primers, designed for semi-automatic... if you got nothing else, sure you CAN use it..... but it would be of your best interest to get like all different primers and just try them out urself.... IF you are trying to me "precision loads"..... WLR seems to be good to me too, I am planning to do another round of testings with primers soon.... In my previous experiments, FED210 is along the line with CCI #200, FED210M is along the line with CCI #BR2..... and the match-grade/BR-grade is 50% tighter than the regular.....

As for powders, I've only worn out half as many Palma barrels as another8 in the last three years, but Varget is the way to go. I have shot the same load (47.0 Varget, 155SMK, 210M, Win brass) from 17 degrees to near 105 and have no pressure or velocity concerns. Besides, Varget is less expensive than RL17.... I used my trusty Brown & Sharpe micrometer to measure diameters of the large rifle primers I have on hand and found the following: CCI 200: .2106, WLR: .2100, 210M: .2105, and some old Winchester No. 115: .2104. I'm tld the Russian / Wolf primers give excellent results and fit snugly. I had to quit using WLR's for Palma because they got too loose, too fast. The mic showed me why. I use the WLR's in my .30-30 now. Last edited by crowbar; 01-28-2009 at 4:26 PM.. Reason: Primer notes... |

I know this has probably been asked many times before but my friends keep asking me this and I don't have a logical answer for them:
"Whats the difference between .308 & 7.62x51 Nato" I heard they're the same but you shouldn't shoot both out of the same rilfe? confusing??? ![]() |

308 is higher pressure.

Ok, thats alot of info to sort through. looks like good stuff though. what about this.
I have a saiga 308 and I'm building a AR-10T soon. I also have several friends who have AR-10T's in the works and a couple freinds with M1A socom's. what would you recomend for us for plinking ammo. #1 concern would be cost. #2 would be accuracy to maybe 200 yrds #3 would be low recoil. also being as I also load .223 I would like to stick to ramshot TAC as powder as it seems to be a decent all around powder. any idea's? |

Im currently using Federal 308 brass, would there be any problem if I used nato WCC brass? Nato brass is thicker correct and therefore the powder charge should be less?

FC brass is a little on the thick side. Not as thick as military, but thicker than say remmy or win. Drop your charge a grain or two and work back up. You'll notice the military stuff lasts WAYYY longer than the Federal junk. And your ES and SD will likely be the same.

Anyone have an idea where I should start for my Rem700? It's the SPS tactical with a 1:12 twist and a 20" barrel. I did lots of reading and for some reason I'm remembering a 155 grain bullet goes well with a 1:12 twist. (I know it has more to do with the length of the bullet, but that's what I remember for some reason.) Anyways, do I just start at a popular recipe and see what happens, or is there a particular direction I should head? Please be kind, I'm still learning.

You would have to size them and compare case volumes. Leave a fired primer in one of each cases. Size the cases without a decapping pin. Weigh each case and note the empty weight. Then fill each case with water to the top of the neck. Now note the difference in weight between dry and wet for each case. That's your case capacity in grains of water. Post what you find.

Then I discoverd the 7.62X54R CZ Steel case, corrosive berdain primed. I just wanted the bullets. Got a few and pulled them down. they are a 147gr. bullet with 46.2gr. of a stick powder..? Looked like a modern smokless powder. Ammo was made in 1986. So, I started with 42gr of this mystery powder and worked up to 43gr using the same bullets. Thats as far as I'm going. I'm about to run out of case space and they are as hot or a little hotter than federal factory loads. So now I'm loading my 7.62x51 "308" for about .21 ea. |

I just went to Turners to start buying reloading ingredients and they dont have any Varget in stock. I was thinking of buying some Alliant Reloader 15 since I've seen quite a few loads using this powder. Is this powder recommended for a 20" barrel w/ 1:12 twist?

I personally use RL15. And RL15 is also the powder that is in LC M118LR.
