I've simply made a left turn and go to the Winchester CGC.... I miss the openness and camaraderie but it is a nice facility...virtually desolate during the week..... Wed and weekends there is trap and skeet.....membership is affordable too!

Yes, we all knew this was coming, the past year has been a drought year with record low rainfalls. I have a friend who works for a municipal water board so I am always attuned to what is happening with weather and drought levels.

When we did the last cleanup, the ranger told me that the GF was at 59% combustible material. When it reaches 60%, the area is closed to shooting. Fact of life, we should just be grateful that our efforts, so far, has resulted in the GF staying open. If we had not intervened with our January cleanup, the GF would already be closed permanently.

Saturday July 13 is "Rifle Sight In Day" at the Winchester Caynon Gun Club on West Camino Cielo.

Why is this noteworthy?

Membership is being offered for $195 which includes membership for the balance of 2013 and all of 2014. Weekends cost members $5 to shoot including targets. Weekdays are free and generally the range is lightly used!

For those unfamiliar, there are 4 ranges.... Pistol, rifle, and a 200 yard range. The shotgun, trap, skeet range is separate.

Here is the link to their website:

http://www.wcgc.org

This is a great alternative to the Glass Factory now that it is closed indefinitely due to fire season!

Hmm...very intriguing and a good value. I may take a trip up for this. If any of you other Calgunners are there, say hi.

Do they have steel there or can you bring your own?

Yes and Yes, Sosoomi correct me if I am wrong I dont remember steel on the 100 yard rifle range. There are five gongs on the pistol range stepping down in diameter. You can bring your own steel or paper targets.

Its really great during the week since its closed to the public, generally there might and thats a big might be someone there shooting but I normally have had the range to myself.

Last 4th of July I went up and shot and only ran into one person.

If anyone is even considering signing up this or the twice a year open houses are the best value.

I think you guys have me sold. GF when open and WGC when GF is not. Someone told me I could also shoot my HXP for my Garand there? Doug, do you know if that it true? What about Russian ammo for the Mosins and SKS, do they have their range areas cleared out enough so that is not a problem or do they forbid shooting magnetic ammo?

Yeah you're right Doug no steel on 100 yard range. I have found that setting up steel on weekends hasn't been a problem...weekdays its a non issue. ... give us a heads up when you are thinking of going.... I'd be happy to introduce you to the range as a guest.

You guys likely know this, but for those who like structured social range environments, there is also Wess Thompson Range out at Piru. $15 to shoot at various steel, paper targets. Even has a 1K range

Just an option

Wednesday is the best day relative to crowds. Weekends get busy at times.

Dammit, I got held up with family emergencies and couldn't make this. Do they do it any other time this year again or was that it?

They usually do one sight in and two open houses a year. At each of those you can get the discount for becoming a member. Not sure when the next open house is though, might be October.

Hey guys, I've been out of the loop for awhile.
First let me say thanks to everyone that has helped out cleaning up the GF. Myself, I have done it twice with the team of volunteers.

Getting caught up on this post and have a question? Are we gonna be able to shoot Clays as standing targets when the site reopens and not have to go clean up the parts and pieces ? My wife really likes to shoot them with her HMR.
I know its splitting hairs but I would think others have thought of this question as well.

Keep up the good work everyone.

Clays are good to go. They are biodegradable and shouldn't be an issue

Yep, we have no problems with clays up there. It's the glass and shotgun shells that drive us crazy.

If I head out there some day with my truck to clean up a bit, where can I legally and responsibly dump what I pick up? Are there legit county dumps anywhere?

There is a county dump just outside of Santa Barbara where you can dump your trash. It's not free however, am pretty sure there is a weight fee.

Also, last week I was looking at a house for sale up on East Camino Cielo (the road to the glass factory) and it said the range was shut down due to fire hazard. Can anyone confirm this?

I just checked my shot logs and pretty sure I went up the day after it opened last year, 12/11/12

Year before that it was not closed at all in 2011. I shot all month of September and October.

IRT to steel targets. To avoid any fire hazard if approved your days of shooting steel ammo there are numbered. Just a thought to consider

Why would one shoot steel ammo? Arent most rounds lead core?

Also regarding rainfall, there will be cloudseeding done in the near future to get more rain to the area, hopefully it helps.

almost all surplus ammo is steel case, steel jacket and or steel core. the only calibers I have that aren't steel at all are SOME of my 5.56, 9mm and 45, everything else is bi metal or steel.

Never doubted Calgunners, just figured there would be a ton of bureaucracy to halt the process.

As I said before, I have cash to throw in to help fund permanent steel targets.

Would also be awesome to post some permanent signs with the 4 safety rules of firearms.

Things in the works guys in regards to steel and target stands and a mess of range safety improvements up there. We are just waiting for approval to put it into motion. Patience, patience.

I agree with the stuff about rain, so far, we are no wetter up there than we were in August. We are going to need some serious, consecutive storms to get us anywhere near opening back up up there. It would be weird if we were closed until January but I guess it could happen.
