Default Official Glass Factory Info Thread - Community Clean Up Coordinator NEEDED!

Hi all:

This will be the new official thread for the CGSSA Sponsored Community Clean-Up of the Glass Factory (Arroyo Burro Bowl) in Santa Barbara.

First things first. Here is a shot of the new location of the firing line after the Forest Service's move of the firing line. The red arrow shows basically where the old firing line was located. The main firing line parking lot is now about 50% of it's original size, but there is still enough room for plenty of cars to park on the dirt road that leads down to the smaller shotgun/pistol area.

The move was intended to reduce the chance of people on the main firing line placing their shots too close to East Camino Cielo at the upper right side of the range. Unfortunately, the relocation doesn't make the main firing line any safer for the shooters over on the smaller shotgun/pistol range. It will be crucial that when cease fires are called at the Glass Factory, that the ENTIRE range ceases fire.

The range is rapidly becoming trashed again. Interestingly, the main garbage pile has not increased in size as we had hoped it would, it looks to me as if it has actually shrunk in size, which means that more the garbage that was in the pile is now scattered all over the range. The range and the entire area is now littered with a lot of smaller, lighter trash, we will have a lot to pickup on our next cleanup.

So when is the next cleanup of the Glass Factory? We set the date this evening, the Spring cleanup with take place Saturday, May 11, 2013. Keep an eye on this thread for more details as they become available. We are looking at some killer prizes for our volunteer gift giveaway. We had such an incredible turnout and cleanup from our January cleanup, we are hoping to replicate that success with the Spring cleanup.

Looking forward to seeing you out there with us!

Default So How Did the CGSSA Meeting With the Forest Service Go?

The CGSSA Glass Factory Cleanup team met with Ranger Smith, the new head of the USDA Forest Service area that includes the Glass Factory. While we cannot divulge all of the details of the meeting, here are some general takeaways that might be of interest to you as we move forward.

1. Calguns/CGSSA's involvement with "adopting" the Glass Factory came at the 11th hour. We are very lucky that we became involved in cleaning up the Glass Factory when we did, there was recently a leadership change with the Forest Service and the new head of the Los Padres region has received complaints and feedback from various community leaders and county politicians to CLOSE the Glass Factory as it had basically become a garbage dump, more than a shooting area in recent years. If we had not organized the January cleanup, the Glass Factory would be closed permanently today.

2. Our involvement, sponsorship and the CGSSA serving as an educational resource for the community about keeping the Glass Factory cleaner is being watched very closely. Plainly speaking, this is it folks, our success will keep this range open and our failure will result in the Forest Service closing the Glass Factory. We, as a team, are being evaluated and judged by the local community, politicians and the Forest Service.

3. We will continue to do everything we have been doing (quarterly cleanups), but our (CGSSA/C3) role will also expand in various other ways. We plan on partnering with at least two other local community organizations to keep the Glass Factory cleaner and safer. We plan on distributing informational flyers, installing signs, handing out trash bags and having a CGSSA presence at the Glass Factory as often as we can, probably mostly on weekends and holidays.

4. One aspiration that we have for the range is to install fixed, steel reactive targets. While details have not been finalized, the Forest Service is considering doing some mowing and controlled burns to eliminate weeds from certain areas of the range. These targets will not be installed right away, we will have to work out the details of who will donate the AR500 targets, who will permanently install the cement and posts, etc. We also know that based upon the oxygen tank that was up on the main hill, even the thickest AR500 reactive targets will only last 6 months to one year before they need replacement. But it is one of our goals to drastically reduce the reasons why anyone would want to drag trash, appliances and TVs to shoot. Steel targets are fun to shoot and if installed correctly, quite safe.

The meeting with the Forest Service was extremely friendly and felt as if we have the beginning of a true partnership. With your help, effective organization and building the local community to treat the Glass Factory with pride, we stand a good chance of preserving this rare, beautiful location to shoot at.

Place looks good as I recently was able to make it up there for first time in a while.

I have been going up there for years. Let's also point out that there are folks on the 'main firing line' as it has been labeled, who have no clue where they are firing. Seems to be the ones closer to end of the line that set targets at and angle where ricochets go over those shooting down at the bottom.

I prefer shooting away from the crowds for a multitude of reasons. Main one, is I don't trust some of the fools who come up there and have no firearm safety skills whatsoever. No thanks, I prefer not to be muzzle swept on my six all morning. Second, I do not go to train then wind up standing around with Mr Chatty talking about the high tariff on lump starch. No thanks.

Yea, I like shooting at the bottom and always adhere to 'red range' calls. I feel safer away from the masses and can get more training completed.

Good work with cleaning up the place. I pack in paper targets and pack them out.

IMHO- May want to draw back on the heavy post about enforcement and all. It's an excellent idea to get group buy in for safety iniatives but when we start talking about taking down liscense plate numbes and getting in peoples faces, well, I don't see that ending well. Counter productive. Just something to consider

I will be there, +1 at least, possibly with more if I can recruit some local friends to make the trip up there. Everyone, please post if you can make it and we will begin to build the volunteer list in this thread.

Points well taken One78shovel. Just to re-iterate, our role, as CGSSA participants, is one of "education resource". We discussed this at the meeting, we have zero LE authority, we are not going to get into fights, arguments or act as unofficial LEOs if we see people doing stupid things up there. After all, everyone up there are carrying guns. When all is said and done, our presence there will simply be as concerned citizens, hopefully educating the people who shoot there that if we don't keep the place clean, we will lose it. Those are really our main functions, cleanups and education.

The enforcement will be coming from the Forest Service and local law enforcement. Once again, as concerned citizens, who have collectively removed forty tons of refuse from inconsiderate people breaking the law, I think it is normal that we will all be glad to see someone "doing something" by writing high fine tickets, but we won't be working as LEOs to help to make this happen, this will all come from the Forest Service and local LEOs on their own, we won't know when they will be there. But once a few tickets are written and some hefty fines are paid, word will spread.

As the past has shown us, there is a population of shooters who are just too immature and inconsiderate to clean up after themselves so the authority side has to step in or the place will be shut down. The Forest Service does not want to shut it down because they know that all that will happen will be that the polluters who shut down the GF will just go elsewhere in the National Forest and will pollute it.

We are optimistic about the future of the GF staying open, but we have to do our part and more to keep it open.

Hopefully we will get some pull in the SFV so you can get a ride, that is a good ways away. Just out of curiosity, have you shot at the Glass Factory before? We like to hear where people who shoot there are from.

I was up there this past weekend, and the weekend before that, it is still looking pretty clean!

I do have to say, the left most side of the new line is a dangerous angle, especially since while I was there were, some folks showed up and decided to put a table on the 'wrong' side of the firing line, in the small area just left of the new line. Which put them in a very dangerous location as there were quite a lot of folks shooting clay's. Thankfully everyone adjusted accordingly.
(I couldn't resist putting this in just because it was there!!)

I have to say, IMHO, the very left most side of the new line could do with getting moved back about halfway between were it was, and were it is now. Would also help with parking a little since that spot seems to have lost a lot of space with the move.

To the point: Put me down for a maybe (almost 100% though), with the same 'maybe' on two others. Have to double check our schedules. Should know in a few weeks to confirm!

Thanks guys. List updated for all three of you.

Not sure about re-locating part of the line again. Anything we do has to be ran through and approved by the Forest Service and they were the ones who moved it. We can ask.

I totally understand, I just wanted to voice my opinion and that of the other 5 people I was with!

Common sense came into play

Probably would be more hassle than its worth to have them just move the ~3 rocks on the left side. We can manage as they are

Bump, need some more people to sign up. We only have thirteen committed volunteers to date. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell your local gun store about this thread.

From a fellow Calgunner who was at the Glass Factory shooting this weekend...The Forest Service is actually cracking down on shooters who are littering our range!

"Just got back from the GF.... We got there about 11am or so....there were two FS trucks and two or three rangers over on the north range.... It appeared they were checking someone's rifle. I heard, but dd not witness...a ticket was issued for debris....apparently they walked the line and told people if you bring it, you own it...take it with you when you leave or we will issue tickets!

People were picking up their targets, wood and paper and carting it away!

The Rangers sat up on the hill and watched from a distance for about an hour!"

Awesome deal that the rangers are writing tickets. Though we are not LEOs, I kind of see a use for writting down plate numbers. If the same plate number keeps showing up and dumping and multiple calgunners see the guy, the real LEOs should be informed so they can catch them. I'm not saying go confront the guy, just if you can get the plate unnoticed. Its easy to act like you are on the phone and snap a pic or type it in the phone. Maybe someone would be willing to setup an excel sheet and enter the number when other calgunners pm the license. Again I'm not talking about any sort of confrontation. The cops just cant be everywhere and need more participation from the public.

Hopefully after the word gets out about the tickets being written there will be far less dumping. $5000 will hurt most peoples wallet.

Thanks!
Where you coming from? From Santa Barbara head up the 154 until you hit east camino cielo road. It is at the very peak of the pass. Turn right and follow the road for about 6 miles. You will see the range as you come down a hill off to the left of you. You can't miss it. The road does Y a few miles in but just stay left. Sometimes there is a road closed sign as well. Just ignore it.

If you come from up north take the 154 and make the left onto east camino cielo.

Someone had better directions with a map on here at one time. I just can't seem to find it.

Here's two basic routes. One from Santa Barbara or anywhere south of it, and another from Santa Maria area or anywhere north of it:
From Santa Barbara or South:

Here's one from Santa Maria or anywhere North of it:

And Lompoc, you just stay on the 246 till you hit the 154 and then follow the above instructions

That part was more jest than anything. That would be out of my control anyway. I just really hate litterbugs, especially on the scale that happens at the glass factory. I also think their guns should be confiscated (because they make all of us look bad and could close the range) and the guns given to me. I'm just starting out in this hobby so my collection is pathetic.

Sounds good to me!
