Default URGENT FOR Bakersfield area shooters - Tupman Shoot/Range CleanUp

****10/22/2013 UPDATE****

LET'S DO THIS! THIS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26 AT 7 AM

We may not have the support of the county but we can make a dent. Let's head out this Saturday October 26, in the morning and clean up what we can.

I'll be out at 7 am with some rakes and shovels. I'll bring the bags and my truck. Let's clean up the big stuff. We can't take tires but we can get everything else that we can. We can section off an area and focus in getting it well cleaned.

I'll bring a couple of coolers with sodas and water. I'll make sure to bring enough for 40 people. Can we get 40? I don't Facebook so can we get people organized through there?

After we clean up, let's shoot! Bring your ARs/AKs/C&Rs whatever! Please make sure to clean up after yourself and let's see if we can get some of the other shooters that show up out there to help us out.

Will you please post in this thread if you're in?

Just wanted to bump this. I guess there are rumors going around that they threatening to close this spot unless people clean it up. I'd be willing to help cleanup if we can set something up

Cool. The 28th looks doable for me. I have a pickup we can use to help haul trash out of there

New update! Since we are doing a community cleanup, we will not be charged for any items that we take to the Taft dump. Let's get this place cleaned up so that we don't lose it!

Please share this info via Facebook and other social networking sites. It's time to show the antis that we can organize and we care.

PM me. I'm a ways north of Bakersfield, but would like to find a place to shoot where I don't have to pay to get in and deal with stupid range rules. If it's something I could get to reasonably, I'd be interested in helping out and shooting.

Shared on a few facebook pages. Looks like we got a few more people that want to help out so far. Do we have a time we are trying to be there?

I'm thinking earlier since it'll be cooler. I'll be out there at 7. I hope to have one person staged at the road so we can show people how to get in. I know it is going to be tough but I may also ask that person to help dissuade shooting while we are cleaning up.

I have a meeting with the county on Wednesday morning at the site. Kern County may be sending roll off bins so that all we have to do is toss garbage in the bins. I was warned that they may ask us to push the cleanup back two weeks so that they can provide additional resources. I'll keep everyone posted.

Head out west from Bakersfield on Taft Hwy. Turn right on Tupman Road and head north. Go through the town of Tupman. Head about 2 miles north. You'll see a large yellow pole in an upside L shape. It's next to a Creek. Head west on the dirt road following it along the Creek. Once you see the bridge, cross it and you're there. Hope to see you out there.

That sucks, I work on weekends. I'm going to try to check it out during the weekdays coming up though. I'll haul out what I can when I can. I'm moving back to Bakersfield in a few weeks and need a place to shoot my curio and relics.

The center of the site is in the link below. If you've shot in the Tupman area before, you probably know this site.

I will update the info as soon as I meet with the county on Wednesday morning. I'll also take some pictures of the site. Lots of tires and household trash out there along with brass, shells and targets.

****UPDATE****

POSTPONED UNTIL OCTOBER

I'm working with the county of Kern to provide assistance on this cleanup. Here I formed me that their cleanup organizers wont be available till at least October 12. They will be providing roll off bins to toss the trash in. We met at the site last week and came up with two areas that we really want to focus on cleaning.

Please tell friends. If we can get 100 people out there, it is probably a 6 hour job with plenty of time left for shooting.

Good choice on postponing it. I am willing to help, witha pickup and a trailer, but will be up in D-8 for deer season. Just post when you are planning on doing it in October.

****10/8/2013 UPDATE****

POSTPONED indefinitely. Your feedback would be appreciated.

After discussion and negotiations with Kern County Waste Management, we have found a major problem with organizing a cleanup at this site. There are three different land owners, one a private oil company and two stage agencies, which have a claim to this property. This means that the shooting going on at this site is illegal.

Kern County Waste Management gave us three options. The first would be to clean up the property ourselves, with no bins or County help but we would have to pay out of pocket in order to dump the trash at a landfill. The second option would be to contact the land owners and have them help us clean it up. This would likely get the site shut down, since the state agencies are of the wildlife preserve variety. The oil company would likely shut down the site for liability reasons. The third option would be to call and report it, which would mean code enforcement would instruct each landowner to clean up the site, likely ending in it being shut down. In short, there are no good options here.

Does anyone have any input on how we could proceed? It is important to me that this site get cleaned up, even if we can't shoot there anymore, because it is the right thing to do. As shooters we have the responsibility to clean up the mess. I'm sure none of us here made the mess but it needs to be cleaned up. Any ideas are welcome. I'm at a loss. Out of respect for the land, I'm going to find another spot to shoot at which is legal and safe.

wow this really sucks you try and do good and at the end you just hurt yourself, I hate it when that happens. I went a few weeks ago with my wife just to try out the new toy afterwards we picked up some trash and hauled it out. at the same time there were other people there but when they left they just packed up their gear didn't even get the targets they brought in. Sometimes I just have to wonder if we cleaned it up completely how long would it last?? It's just sad people don't care about the land, think about it guys this is our playground we have fun here lets help keep it clean.

I'm guessing that the owners don't really care about the shooting or they would of posted something up about it. Do we have an estimate of how much it would cost to get the bins?

I think they don't know what's going on at the property. If the clean up is still going on I'm still in and with a long bed truck if someone has a trailer and truck I can pull it .

I'm pretty sure the state agencies aren't aware of what's going on. The oil company might know. There hasn't ever been a well drilled on this property.

We can't even pay to have bins dropped there because we don't own the land and the County of Kern can accept liability during cleanup. I don't blame KC at all.

I guess the best we can do is fly under the radar, pack out what we can per truck per visit and leave it at that. I don't want to get the site shut down.

I'd be up for doing an organized cleanup day like I originally proposed without county support. We would all be responsible for disposing whatever we loaded up. We could grab all of the targets we could find that were left and make the look a lot cleaner.

I'm guessing a Saturday would work better than Sunday so no one misses church. Would next Saturday Oct 26 be too little notice? I don't have Facebook. Would someone be willing to spread the word that way? I can let our LGS's know.

As one who hosts cleans on BLM land, I think this might be your best bet.

Start with the big stuff and try to keep hitting it bi-monthly. If its really bad, I hope you get 10 (or more) individuals with trucks to haul the stuff out. Even if its just a few of you, do what you can.

Most people are more inclined to pick up after themselves if a site is clean. Good luck.

So it looks like shooting here is Illegal, and if caught shooting here you could get in big trouble.

This Saturday, October 26 at 7 am, I will be out to clean up. Please feel free to join in. I will have rakes, bags, shovels my truck to haul stuff out in. Two coolers with water and assorted sodas.

We will need more trucks, rakes, shovels and PEOPLE.

Let's end the cleanup by noon so that we can shoot some, too. Maybe we show some of the shooters out there how to clean up their targets and respect our shooting spaces.

I don't have Facebook. Can someone spread the word there, too?

WHO CAN WE COUNT ON?

Yes sir. Let's do this! For anyone coming, please bring shovels and rakes. I will bring all I have but I couldn't get a rental company to donate any.

We had a good turnout for the first try and a great group of people. Getting 14 people to commit a Saturday to cleaning is other people's mess is extraordinary. Thanks to everyone, including CGers Aim2Shu, Slim/// and Mirage for coming out and making a dent in this trashed site. I wasn't joking when I said the Kern County WM rep called this site the worst illegal dumping area in Kern County.

On to some pictures. Before the cleanup:

And the after pictures

This was the third windshield that we found out there.

The guys and I discussed it and we think it may be a good idea to make this a regular thing. After the new year, maybe once a month for an informal CG get together where we each pack out a truck bed full of garbage per trip. That'll start to make some noticeable change.
