Started this photo thread dedicated to the AR15 based SPR "Special Purpose rifles" accurized & scoped using the very popular .223, 5.56 rounds. Designed for long-range engagements in access of 400 yards to close range targets under 50.
Come on lets see your SPR Noveske's, Larue's, Colt's, LWRC's etc etc Basic SPR requirements: 16" - up 1/7 or 1/8 twist barrel Free-floated barrel/rail system Tactical Long Range Scope Iron sights

SPR is an overloaded term, but in general, one of the more famous one is the Crane's Mark 12 Mod 0/1 SPR. And most of the time "SPR" is used to refer to 18".... not too many people will call a 16" SPR... Here is the story behind it: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.htm...f=134&t=141410 Mine.... ![]()

Yes that's correct but recently I've met up with more and more LE sharpshooters with a shorter 16" Urban SPR type of set up. Because of that I wanted to leave that option in so we can get an idea what SPR builders are doing these days.
btw, great set up you have there, Quote:

16" Urban SPR <- yet another new term.... ![]() If you want a 16", "accurized & scoped" ar, most will call that a "RECCE".... or the SEAL Recon Rifle.... Thx, still work in progress..... gonna grab the KAC 600 rear and KAC front sights soon.... lol Also, the LaRue mount is really more superior than the ARMS rings....

I wouldn't personally consider an AR15 as sniper rifle neither and a shorter 16" Urban "SPR type" is not trying to set a new term its just what I've came across in the past couple months. As for what departments are using ARs for "Sniper rifles" I have no clue, but as for LE officers I met training on 16" Scoped ARs as well as 18" SPRs well Maricopa county here in AZ as well as Clark county in NV.

No, none of those are SPRs.
Nice collection, though. SPR is a shortened rifle-gassed M16 RECCE is a lengthened carbine. Both are accurized and scoped. Sure, you could call almost anything one or the other, but intent has to be there.

I think I see what you are trying to do (deploy irons without removing scope), but you're better off with a one-piece mount. With your currrent setup a proper cheek weld will require adjusting your cheekpad when changing from scope to irons. With a QD one-piece mount it's a lot faster to just remove the scope. Also you'll be able to use published bullet drops since your scope will be at the right height.
Anyway, back to pic thread... |

A 16 inch SPR? Sounds like you're really talking about a Seal Recon Rifle. MSTN made a lot of money making civilian versions of the rifle the boys over at CRANE invented. Great rifles. I built one early on when very little information on them was available. Sold it a while back to fund another project, but I plan on building another one someday.

So wait, I could just make my rifle an SPR if I added a scope to it?
Am I the only one who thinks these designations are silly? Here's my rifle, And here's a friends rifle, which I think meets the so-called "SPR" designation.

Pac,
You know I hate to throw you under the bus and all..... Wrong collar. Even if you were going for something OPS other than the 12th (that's correct for that build, 12th.)...you're off. The gap from threads to 20 degree taper, it's too far. You ever make it out this way....I'll let you thread mine on that bad boy. Your collar is for the 14th, 15th, 16th, and M4-s...

ah, thanks for the info tech. ops inc has been out of stock of the 12th brakes and collars for quite some time and i finally got a hold of these from a seller on arfcom. he said that this was correct for my build. being that i've never seen any other ops items up close, i didn't know the difference - but i did notice it looked a bit long. i'll have to change it out when i can get a hold of one.

Technique...not sure if you know the answer to this but thought I'd try...how many set screws does the OPS INC collar normally have? The reason I ask is, I got a brake and collar on an upper I bought and the collar has three set screws. In all the pictures I've seen, the collars all look like they only have one set screw.
