MANTIS DRY FIRE SYSTEM

Does anyone use Mantis dry or live fire systems! I would like those who have share their opinions on their effectiveness and perhaps offer recommendations. Ammo is expensive.

Bought the AR system for NY special price.... The rest of the system will cost more hundreds.... crap.

I've read enough bad reviews to avoid it. Cost too is crazy. I have tried it at a local shop and it was pretty slick though.

I did read a post online which said:
"One thing I do with AR specifically is place a chapstick tube in the chamber and gently close the bolt to get a dead trigger with a functioning safety"

I dont have chapstick tubes small enough, but might work.

I dry fire without one and while it isn't exactly the same, it's free vs a couple hundred bucks.

Keep in mind how much you'll save in ammo costs when you price the Mantis.

I have a friend that spent $10,000 on a Laser Shot system. Everyone thought he was nuts for spending that kind of money. But he easily has 200,000 rounds through it. It's paid for itself many times over. Hell, I've put at least 5,000 rounds through his system myself. So have a bunch of other friends of his.

With the caveat that while NOT mandatory and you could get similar training with more “old school” type of dry practice - setups like these do help in one form or another… Henceforth…


Mantis system user here since the 1st gen… I got the X10 Elite for basically less than $100 when I traded in my 1st gen as an appreciation for being an early adopter.

If you are consistently able to score 95 and above in the Open Training routine in Dry Fire to a one (1) inch target at 5-yards away - you’d be way better than the majority of CalGunners… And with less ammo expenditure.

Ramp that up with the Compressed Surprised Break routine will set you up for high-speed shooting that can be applied to dynamic situations.

That said, I still practice with my X10 even if I blow through about 7K rounds of ammo a year.

Yup! That X10 Elite is now $250 (yeah, inflation). What is that worth? 1K rounds of ammo? 5 range trips? … Imagine getting an equivalent practice of 1K trigger presses in various drill in one month…

I have owned the Mantis 10X for 4 months and just purchase the Laser Academy. I use my 10X several times a day and can tell you that my trigger control has definitely increased since I started using it. Could this have happened by just dry firing? I suppose it could, but before getting my Mantis X I Dryfired daily but it was not as enjoyable. I would recommend buying the system.

I was so impressed with the Mantis system that decided to purchase the laser academy. I have yet to set it up so I can’t offer any feedback but from what I have seen it helps to my dry firing sessions more enjoyable which translates into more practice.

i've had a laserlyte cartridge and target for years. i do a lot of dry fire to build up muscle memory etc...it is good to see if the heavy da pull takes you off target and of course can improve your draw times.

Does anyone know how the technology actually works? I don't see any reference to actually zero the system so how does it know where you're pointing?

From what I infer, that little picatinny-mounted dongle has either a radar or an accelerometer (or both) and is always recording, and it senses the vibration from the trigger pull and hammer drop to determine what's going on. And it kinda guesses where you're pointing by assuming if you hold it still for a time, that's where your target is and any movement is a deviation from that aimpoint.

I've seen reviews where people use it for both dry fire and live fire, so is there some special dry fire target that's a reflector or sensor so the system knows where you're pointing?

The Mantis X does not have a way to zero it. It measures a fraction of a second before the steadying of the firearm before the trigger pull, movement during trigger pull and movement after the trigger breaks. It does not require a special target. You just need to aim at something and focus on sight alignment and trigger pull. I used to have a “working “ Top Shot Marksmanship system that is a lesser expensive version of the high end one that Highpower competitors use (I can’t recall the name of that other system but it’s Uber expensive) that did the same thing.

The improvements come from seeing how your trigger pull affects your sight alignment. I thought I had a good trigger pull before using the Mantis but I learned that My trigger pull, grip and stance affected my shot. After a couple of weeks using the Mantis I went to the range and my shots got tighter at all ranges. I’ve seen an incremental increase in my accuracy ever since. Plus it makes dry firing more enjoyable because you have immediate analysis of each shot.

Could I have achieved the same results without the Mantis? Probably not, because I would not have know what I was doing wrong and most likely would have formed even worse bad habits.
