Default New Swedish Ljungman

I've got a real Jones for Swedish weapons. It is partly because they are very well made and generally in great shape. The other part is that the rifles are almost universally chambered in one of the finest military cartridges (IMO) ever fielded...the 6.5 x 55.

I recently bagged a Swedish Ljungman

It is still in Jail at my FFL, but I'm looking forward to posting a range report soon.

Very nice!

A decent, all matching Ljungman without an import mark has been on my get-list for a very long time. I have a couple of nice Hakims, but the Ljungman is one rifle that has eluded me for a every long time. I've bid on many, but the prices shot to such ridiculous levels even for their exceptional condition, that I couldn't justify it; they were like G43/K43 level prices.

I won a steel match with my Ljungman years ago. A very pleasant rifle to shoot, although it throws the brass a long, long way away, and if you don't learn the proper way to load it, you will give your hand a bruising that makes garand thumb look like a paper cut.

I e always wanted one of this but my luck ran out. I looked on GB and the prices are beyond what I’ll spend nowadays.

Nice score

The AG42 has its own Garand Thumb warning, can do some damage to the joints if not careful.

Thanks, guys. As I said, I've got a real Jones for Swedish military hardware. Truth be told, I've got several other Ljungmans. My first two were glommed 10 to 12 years ago when they were available for $500. I got one rather recently for a great price because some careless auctioneer mis-identified it as a Hakim. This one was more, but was still a great buy in today's market.

These are the two that I got years ago.

And this was the "Hakim"

My younger son and I shoot a vintage semi-auto military rifle silhouette match from time to time. We generally use the Ljungmans and my son frequently kicks *** with his.

This is 4 stage, 220 to 550 yard, 10 rounds each at chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams. We shoot it at the SAC Valley Shooting Center...

The attached match results are typical

Yep, I once forgot to put the safety on before loading. Was able to get my hand out of the way with just a little damage. Never again!

With factory ammo, that is very true. It also tears the hell out of the brass...including sometimes tearing the rim. I think that occurs because of the slow burning powders generally used in 6.5 x 55 factory ammo.

I worked up loads with medium burning IMR 4064 (or any powder suitable for the Garand) and managed to tame the violent extraction-ejection sequence. The brass survives much better and the brass doesn't get thrown nearly as far.

I had one of these, but sold it off a few years back. When I fired factory PMC ammo in it, the brass usually ejected fairly violently, and often came out in two pieces.

Very common. I've had many factory rounds have the rim partial torn from the extraction-ejection sequence. Head seperation was also common.

A number of Ljungman shooters advised lubing the cases (as the Swedes did) before shooting. I tried it and it did seem to preserve the case (I used Borden's Slide-all a spray dry lubricant). But with the medium burning powder reloads, that was no longer necessary.
