Mosin Nagant PU Sniper Scope lens covers

I did a brief search. Hoping to find a nicer way. Would like to keep it historically correct if possible.

I have seen the leather strap go through the cut out circle or through the gap when you take the scope actually out of the mount.

How in the hell do you get that cover through the hole? lots of saddle soap/grease and folding it though?

Id rather not remove the scope from its factory install....

Then when you look through "historical" photos about 80% have no covers in sight, let alone on rifle. I say "historical" because they are almost always staged, but you would not remove that to take a picture I'm pretty sure..so?....


Anyone here keep their lens covers for scope around?

Im about to take this rifle out for its first rounds and getting it sighted in. A bit excited to get this commie steel warmed up on some iron plates with dam cheap ammo: )

They were put on when the scope was mounted to the mount. I have seen people
Put them through the large hole in the mount instead of between the scope and mount.

That hole is a smaller diameter then the glass lenses. That is some serious smashing to get through. I almost think the leash between covers was removed then re stitched. Tempted to remove scope....but probably use a tiny black zip tie to scope mount instead

You'll be surprised. I thought the same thing, tried it, and voila, the cap went through the mount hole

I will probably go that direction. I will say again though, less than 10% of the pu photos from ww2 , hell even Korea/Vietnam show the covers anywhere near the rifle let alone on them.

Maybe it had to do with war expediency. I would think that fishing them through and then sewing them would be unnecessary time.

Or the troops removed them/they were destroyed/caught on things or “lost”.

I bought PU at a gun show in the 90s that had its lens caps on and was in a canvas case. There was a sheet in the case with a rebuild date and inspection buyoff.. all in Russian. Think I paid $100 for it… Sold it long ago.

Not historically accurate, but I did a loop of paracord.

When you are out for sighting don't forget the rubber butt stock pad. It will really help and save you bruises on your shoulder.

I put a bunch of saddle soap on the onensidenofnlends cover to soften it up. Got it through the round hole.

I have a could slip on rubber pads that I use for the m39. PU will borrow it when we go to the range in next couple weeks. Have a fee cases of Circle 10 ammo to use. Bore sighted in about above bullseye in hallway at 10 yds. Ready to poke holes at 100 and confirm the 54r zero. Then let loose on the steel plates at 220/290yds.

aLRIGHT...CAPS ON...SHOT FOR FIRST TIME! STUPID CAPS LOCK

Got scope dialed in mostly after 20 rounds at 100 yds. about a 3" grouping with no rigid rifle stand, resting in sandbag and kind of a crappy trigger using Circle 10 ammo from late 70's. Blasted the steel gongs at 220/290 with ease. De-salted/oiled and tucked back into safe ready for next range day. I was very happy it performed as I had bought two about a decade ago..only shot one, which worked great as well- then sold one of them here and mistakenly sold the one I had shot! Im glad I did not get stuck with a lemon

A bit interesting too...I had to open a 2nd crate of Circle 10- 54r. I guess I have now shot over 800 rounds through PU and m39/m27's. Mostly m39. I don't think I have shot more than 100/200 rounds through either of the PU's.
