My guess is, they'll be available at that price until the price comes down again. It seems like supply is finally catching up with demand, although without competition from Russian-made primers, prices are unlikely to reach historic lows.

Just curious...what makes them much better?

Remington 7-1/2's have a 025" primer cup thickness compared to the CCI 400 @ .020". Handles higher pressure and are great in gas guns. This primer was recommended by White Oak barrels for reloading.
It compares to the CCI 450 and 41 and Federal AR primer, which are also .025" primer cup thickness. When I buy for my gas guns, I buy the .025" cup primers. Last edited by FLIGHT762; 01-05-2023 at 3:55 PM.. |

While we're on the subject, why are Federal primers more sensitive and where do Winchester primers sit in all this?

Both Federal and Winchester standard S/R primers have a .020" primer cup. I can use both of them for 9MM primers in my Glock. They will go off reliably in the Glock.
When I tested Remington 7-1/2's in the 9MM for the Glock, they would not reliably go off, 70% + misfires. Cup is too thick for a Pistol. Winchester is now producing #41 primers for 5.56 ammo since they are now running the Lake City ammunition plant. |

Anecdotally, I've been using Winchester primers pretty much exclusively since I started reloading in the mid-90's....... to include countless 1,000's of rounds of .308 and 30-06 fired through various M1A's and Garands. I have never had an issue with the .20" primer cup in those semi-auto rifles, so I'm not sure how much difference that extra .005" will make - at least in my applications.

It's not an issue in the L/R primers since their cup thickness is: .027". This pertains to S/R primers that have two thicknesses, depending on Mfg.
When you get up to max. pressures in the S/R primers, the .025" cups will handle pressure better than the .020" cups. When guys are loading S/R sized primer pocket brass in what are normally the large rifle cases like 308 Palma brass and a few others used in long range comp ammo, they prefer the .025" S/R primer cupped primers because they will hold up better in higher pressures. That answers a couple of issues I've seen with my Valkyrie and 6.5 Cr brass using srp, using CCI or Win I can blow them out.

I'm surprised you didn't have issues with leaking LR primers in the early 2000s

With it being so unknown what the future holds, I'm noticing each site has been increasing prices on powder. Primers are what they are but even BR primers are way beyond ridiculous, 170 per k.
I just purchased 6k primers from Natchez, 1 5 1/2 for Pistol Mag, 2k CCI LR and 3k CCI SR. Right now only good spot to get powder is still Powder Vally with Grafs and Midsouth right behind. Midway, Brownells, Hodgen, etc are all in the 280 range for regular powders and 300+ for the elite powders. Grafs has Winchester 41s in a 5k pack right now for like 440, fyi. |
