yep... wrap disassememled rifle in newspaper..putting in black trash bag ..leave out for summer day.. wipe down.
Like said before..be EXACTLY sure firing pin channel is squeaky clean. Take your time pushing retainer pin out..mine have been mostly a PIA to get out. Or put in a 55 gallon drum of hot diesel... Then pour that diesel back into tour t-34

5 gallon bucket with a couple gallons mineral spirits and soak a couple days. Flip the barrel and push out that cosmo snake. Put parts in boiling water and blow dry and immediately blow dry with compressed air and oil. As mentioned disassemble bolt. Use Q tip to clean the ID where the firing pin chamfer is. It has to rattle afterwards or buy that spring kit thingy for it. A couple weeks back I did see a slam fire on the range. Didn’t bother me but it sure shook up some people lol

I recently cleaned the cosmoline out of an as new Cliton Era SKS. I used paper towels, a couple old wash clothes, and an old toothbrush soaked in Kroil. For the trigger group a can of Gun Scrubber to clear out the nooks and crannies. And yes, disassemble the bolt group and clean out the firing pin channel and firing pin using pipe cleaners soaked in Kroil. As clean as you think you got it, at your first range session all sorts of gunk is going to ooze out.

So many of you make it a lot harder on yourselves than it really needs to be.

done this more times than I can count.
fully and I mean fully dissemble rifle and all parts. take the stock, wrap in paper towels, put in BLACK trash bag, but in on the dash of your car facing south into the sun. replace towels every few hours. small parts: soak them in mineral spirits. get a small tray. remove every few hours, wipe clean with paper towel, place them back in there. barrel and other large parts: Steam wand... hand steamer... etc: heat and wipe clean. repeat often inside barrel: heat gun... or lots of patches soaked in mineral spirits oil and reassemble

I've had zero luck doing the black trashbag in the summer thing. But I've never tried it with flour.

The only thing a trash bag does is heat up cosmoline and turn it almost liquid. The wrapped in rags/newspaper helps absorb it. You still have to wipe it down. I use some disposable rubber gloves and just more rags/newspaper.
Not a big deal to me.

Back when Big 5 had Ishvesk and Tula Mosins for $199 with the original sling, toolkit, and oil/solvent cans and ammo pouch, everyone used to disassemble the entire gun and soak the parts in a mineral spirits bath.
Now mineral spirits are banned in CA you have to get them in Vegas. |

If you are in California forget carb cleaner , brake cleaner, and any solvent from HomeDepot/Lowes. They were all sacrificed as an offering to the smog gods and are now mostly acetone. They will not cut the cosmoline very well and may well cause damage.
Any light hydrocarbon/oil based solvent is best. California WD40 will work. You can get it in a gallon can. It is more oil than solvent in California now. Mineral spirits works great, but is no longer available. However, charcoal lighter fluid is usually the exact same thing. I always have some on hand for solvent duties. For a little heavier fraction Kerosene will work great too. Gasoline will work, but is aggressive and is more dangerous to use. I try and avoid it. |
