I use a small steam cleaner to remove cosmoline from US surplus guns as well as commie surplus guns. I'm not sure why you think cosmoline is different if it comes from other countries?????

Be sure to remove the firing pin and clean it and the inside of the bolt out really well, they tend to go full auto when that gets gummed up

Buy some aluminum trays from your local dollar store. Mix hot water with some simple green and let the smaller parts soak in the mixture. As for the barreled receiver use a heat gun to sweat the cosmoline out

Put the stock in a black trash bag, put bag in sun, wipe off from time to time. It works better in the summer, so you could use a heat gun gun instead, and just keep wiping.

Clean out the bore, chamber. Clean out the fixed mag. Wipe gunk of face of bolt. Take 300 rounds and find BLM.

Cook/Melt the Cosmo off.

Luckily for me when I needed to remove cosmoline from my Mosin stock it was summer time. So I did what most do and wrapped it in a trash bag and left it outside for hours. It gets most of the cosmoline and heavy build up. I then hit it with the heat gun for the tiny crevices. Idk how you feel about this but whenever I have a cosmoline filled rifle I pour hot water down the chamber/barrel then polish the chamber area with kroil and jb bore paste

A little heat, paper towels or rags, and a little effort will do the trick.

As mentioned above, be sure to get the firing pin clean, so it moves freely, to avoid slam fire action.

Anyone else think there should be a sticky about the removal of cosmo sticky?
It's only been discussed a ga-zillion times with the same responses.

It's c & r sub forum 101 kinda stuff.

Carry on.

Wish I had access to the internet when I got my first SKS.

Cleaned it off with paper towels, took it to the range and was surprised at the puddle of crap it left on the shooting bench.

Good luck.

Gasoline. Best solvent on cosmoline, ever.

It works the fastest and most thorough, won't need heat to work, and it won't harm any finish or the wood as will many cleaners like brake-cleaner, acetone, lacquer thinner, carburetor cleaner, and such.

Don't be a moron and use it safely - i.e., don't smoke, don't use near running equipment, well-ventilated, don't throw any gas-soaked rags in the trash or enclosed spaces when done, yada, yada, retards need not apply.

If you are going to use gasoline, use "white gas" or what we call Coleman Fuel now.

The steamer or heat gun work awesome on metal. If the stock is laminated, I wouldn't use solvents just mi!d heat and towels.

Kerosene is better than gas at dissolving grease or cosmoline. Plus it's not near as dangerous to work with.

Harbor Freight to the Rescue in just 3 Easy Steps!

Step One:
Buy a plastic tote tub, drill a couple half or quarter inch holes in the lid and all five sides. Put unloaded AK in tub and
travel to nearest Truck Stop that has a self truck wash spray gun.

Step Two:
With AK inside tub and lid secured, drop a dozen quarters in the machine. Then carefully insert spray gun nozzle in
any of the pre-drilled holes. You may consider standing atop the tote with at least one foot.

Step Three:
Active spray gun. 10 minutes of circulating high pressure water is required for all ComBloc rifles. 7 minutes for M1 Garands.

Remember, pre-heated water for spay gun is always a plus.

This worked very well for me. Did this years ago with a couple of Mosin Nagants. Miss those rifles…

Someone mentioned kerosene, which works very well indeed. Diesel fuel is another good solvent, for others who may find themselves in a similar situation. Diesel fuel is, very often, less expensive than kerosene and is, if anything, slightly safer, though kerosene itself is pretty safe.

So, a small tub of such solvent, a toothbrush, and time. That did it for my Mosins. It should do just as well for any other firearm preserved in cosmoline.

BTW...I *love* cosmoline. If you hate cosmoline, remember that it's the reason these ol' milsurps are preserved as well as they are, so cosmo is our friend.

This can happen and resulted in a fatality at the Los Gatos Rod & Gun Club Range several years ago. Gun slam-fired, went full auto, recoil shifted the gun off the table as it continued firing and hit and killed the owner.

Was it there or at the Sunnyvale Rod and Gun club that the Navy Arms SKS did that and killed the owner. One of our members (now dead) testified as an expert witness in that case - per him - like back in the 80's.

Just going by memory here (which could be fuzzy). At least the slam-fire, full auto occurred on a Chinese SKS, can't be certain it was Los Gatos range or not. This was way back when they were super popular and available for around $100 or so (IIRC).

But I generally used boiling water and then WD-40.

Just buy charcoal lighter-fluid. It's genuine mineral-spirits. Cheap too. But because of the 'purpose' it's not affected by the same ESG/Climate scam/VOC ban nonsense.

The 'green' stuff is crap, and many of the online offerings have switched to that too, or won't sell it to CA at all.

NEXT TIME!

EASIEST, CHEAPEST, FASTEST, with very little scrubbing/elbow grease. Go to thrift store. Spend a couple bucks on the biggest cooking pot available.

Disassemble firearm and place all metal parts in pot. Cover them with water plus a bunch. Place on BBQ, and LITTERALLY BOIL THE CRAP OUT OT THEM. With said BBQ close to wall/fence. Also place receiver end of firearm in pot. With muzzle leaning against fence. Add water as it evaporates. Cook for about an hr.

After cosmo is cooked out of receiver. Swish it around and then flip it over, so muzzle down. Pour boiling water into receiver multiple times, and flush barrel.

Quote:
wiki says; .... Chemically, Cosmoline is a homogeneous mixture of oily and waxy long-chain, non-polar hydrocarbons. It is always brown in color, but can differ in viscosity and shear strength. Cosmoline melts at 113–125 °F (45–52 °C) and has a flash point of 365 °F (185 °C).
After you sit and have a few brews as the boiling water does the work. Rinse parts in hot water to remove any thin soft cosmo film remaining. Squirt with WD-40. Or other aerosol oil of choice.

And only then, get after the parts with solvent, toothpicks, brushes, etc.

It's called the KISS RULE. And stands for Keep It Simple Stupid.

above is similar to the " cat litter filled black trash bag on the dash method" which worked pretty well too but made for risky driving!
