Default M1A scope, what are you using and your thoughts?

Looking to put a scope on my scout, have a Springfield mount just need the glass. Curious to see what other folks are running, the magnification and what distance they’re shooting.

Thanks.

I just picked up a Springfield mount as well.

On my old one I had an SWF a super sniper fix 10 power scope, which is pretty much the cheapest scope that can stand up to 308.

SWFA SS 10X is a great choice for the price.

I have the Springfield mount as well, but find it uncomfortable and awkward to use. I’ve settled on just using the Vortex 2-7 scout optic, it has its limitations also (field of view) but I find it more intuitive and comfortable to use. I think I’d be ok with a traditional scope setting on a full size M1a and a stock riser, but I like keeping the scout as slimline and low profile as possible.

What’s uncomfortable about it? Height?

I’m in absolutely no hurry. I’m going to run open sight for a bit while I research Glass options.

For anything within 300 yards, I use Crimson Trace Brushline Pro 3-9x40 BDC, with the factory Springfield mount yes it sits high, just get a cheek riser.

Height is one issue, eye relief is the other. The stock of an M14 naturally puts your eye close to the rear sight. The mounts (Springfield, Sadlak, Basset, etc) puts the scope eyepiece further back, past the rear sight. Unless you have a really short scope, you end up having to "pull back" your face when getting behind the scope. For example my Leupy 3X10 on a Bassett "Low" mount.

Bushnell 4X12X40 duplex reticle since I had a extra one. Later I put on a extra Leupold 3X9X40 duplex reticle

Yes it sits up there pretty high, without a riser or a aftermarket stock your off the stock to get a good sight picture.

I just prefer a nice low tight optic on the scout, personal preference and what you want to use it for. I don’t shot long range with mine so a 2-7 is just fine for me.

Thumbs up Nightforce

I have a regular M1A with a Krieger 11 twist. I also have the "Smith Enterprise" scope mount which has two hard points and is very sturdy. It doesn't loosen up. I run a Nightforce 5.5 X 22 X 56 scope. Any time you want to get out there you can with that one. I also load 41.5 grs of 4895 with an AOL of 2.8 using Nosler 168 gr bullets. I never differ from this load.

On mine I have, a Smith Enterprise Inc mount, A.R.M.S. quick detach rings, and a Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x40mm PR scope. On the stock I use a Bradley Cheek Rest.

Slightly different platform, but I put a Hi-Lux LER scope on my Steyr Scout rifle:
