The Colt frame looks original. If it had a matching numbered slide it would be a 3-4K gun. To the right Colt person that original frame with its checkered parts is worth 2K.

It looks like a service grade. Why would someone pay twice the value when they can be obtained from the CMP?

Doesn’t matter what grade it is,the frame is an 80 year old original, with all its markings still sharp and original finish. The P proof mark and the GHD inspector initials are very much intact and unaltered. The Colt ‘ VP” proof in the trigger guard is still very visible. These things get obliterated when a gun is reparked. Now I’m assuming the other side with the “ United States Property” mark and other marks are still as sharp. The original small parts which are checkered are correct. There is no idiot scratch from the slide stop. Any other questions?

Most of the service grades look like that. It looks like there is a partial idiot scratch.

This is the first one I pulled from the CMP forums. Most if not all service grades look like the OPs.

Most if not all CMP pistols have correct checkered parts.

FYI, the thumb safety is from a WWI Colt

Not necessarily, the wider ( non checkered)serrated safety occurred around 1943. One of the pictures above shows that safety. Of course small changes like that have no serial cutoff as existing parts could be used up. Not knowing the guns serial can’t tell the year. Would guess it to be between 1,088,726 and 1,208,673 serial numbers. G.H.D. ( Guy Drewry) did most of Colt inspection in 1943.
If you note my Colt military from April 30,1941 has the old style safety. Also note the small parts are Brite blue in color which were Colt commercial parts at that time and were used up as necessary.

CMP service grade w/Colt frame and Ithaca slide with a HS barrel and a really bad idiot scratch! Looks like someone really worked at it since it extends into the finger relief area for the trigger.

Thanks for the information.

Per the FOIA request from 1975 to July 21 2010 - this Colt M1911A1 was stationed at the Crane Division Naval Surface Warfare Center. Would have been nice to know where it was stationed before that and what Theater of operations it was used in before tracking started.

Here are a few more pics.

Your gun is a late 1942 pistol. It’s also one of the earliest GHD inspected pistols I’ve seen. Most 1942 pistols have WB inspector marks and then GHD would have taken over sometime in late 1942. Looking at these new pictures with more details, the side where the US Property mark has a military stamp
missing which would indicate it is refinished.

Happy with my service grade Colt but it had a Remington slide.

Colt was made the same year as my dad and his Ford.

I just wish it was a Colt Slide.

Btw..pulling this out in the parking lot of a major shopping mall and I can see some people got an aneurism seeing the pistol.
