I had to drive to the airport Thursday morning for a flight to Vegas. I seriously debated whether to take my truck, 4wd dually with studded snow tires, or the Jeep with regular mud and snow tires. I took the truck because of the studded tires and almost didn't make it back up the road to my house on Friday. That Jeep just motors right on through everything as long as you're easy on the brakes and throttle.

My kids are moving up in January. I'm going to have to fly to Arizona and rent a small u-haul. I may need to store stuff in town and make runs up the hill with my truck since depending on what the weather is getting a u-haul up here may be a serious non-starter.

In fact, the wife and I just brought a 6x12 u-haul trailer up a week ago. I had to chain up my truck, and still just barely made it up to the house.

IF you need a place to store, there is my place in Athol and I have a friend with a small yard in CDA. His shop is being renovated right now so just yard space if you have an enclosed trailer.

Thanks for the offer. I'm probably going to be using a small u-haul truck so depending on weather I may just rent a storage unit in town to offload stuff immediately, then make trips in my truck to haul the stuff up. Fortunately it won't be that much. Thanks for the offer though!

The three day storm hit N Idaho yet?
I’m expecting to have to blow snow at least twice a day just to get the kids to and from school

We got some, about 12" new fall at our house, I'm dealing with a stuck machine right up next to my RV trailer. I was trying to cut a path behind the shop and got a little slideways. Won't be doing that again.....

We got about another foot yesterday.

Warmed up to 33 degrees today so it made for a hard time plowing with the little Suzuki 500 but got 'er done.

Now we are going to freeze again so it's time for the idiots on ice show to begin.

That's if people can figure out how to make it there.

Around Athol today it's like everyone forgot what the white fluffy stuff is.

Some tard bucket tried to pass the plows on 95 and smashed into them. Yeah, I said plows as in two of them, side by side.

My wife said they are up to 6+ snowplows hit already this season. It amazes me people think it's a good plan to pass a snowplow on the right.

The high will be 12 today down to 3 later on. Sub zero over night. I kept up with the snow removal yesterday so only 1/4” to clear this morning.

I got out there early today and only had to deal with the wind for about 45 minutes or so.

I was fearing how the plowing would go after the 8" or so yesterday but it was light and fluffy. The quad made quick work of the long driveway and around the house.

-2 out by Ohio Match/Ramsey right now. Trying to get psyched up to leave the warm house and take the doggos out for a poop party. Wouldn't be so bad if the wind wasn't blowing. Good thing is, no trees down so far this year in any place that matters on my property.

-1 with a "RealFeel" of -11 in my area now. We don't have central heat. We use an old 70's wood stove, made at Hern Iron Works in CDA. The thing kicks once it gets hot though. We also have small electric wall heaters in the bedrooms. House is well built and pretty toasty now though.

Hern is a scrap yard now, the one I use actually, and they have the old plant still in the back.

It's cool to see the old foundry. Friggin neat.

You should be a weather person, its -2F where I live in Hayden as I write this! Why would you try and clear 1/4"? It is beginning to look like this winter will be making up for the last two mild winters we had.

LOL.
We have a LONG driveway up to the house. I hate the ice tracks the delivery drivers leave so I try and keep ahead of them. My kids are flying in tomorrow just in time for them to take over snow removal. I believe we are getting 2-3”.

I read this morning the temps will be in the 40’s next week. Currently -6 right now.

Maybe the rest of the season will be on the milder side? That was the pattern in SLT the last few years.

I got out there early today and only had to deal with the wind for about 45 minutes or so.

I was fearing how the plowing would go after the 8" or so yesterday but it was light and fluffy. The quad made quick work of the long driveway and around the house.
That wind was no joke! We drove into town for some Christmas dinner items and it was 10 degrees. With the wind in our faces I’ll bet it was -10.
My wife was prepared with a pull up face covering but I was intent on showing her I was an idiot taking the pain.

Currently -15 in Idaho Falls, Had to run the pellet stove, diesel heater, gas heater, & electric heater in the shop, Taking about 2 hrs to get to 60F. Building a AWD fat bike I won't be able to test till spring, unless I put studded snow tires on it.

I'm going to have to run to town and buy a **** load of ice melt and some tube socks.

I've got some serious ice damns on the roof I need to deal with and with the upcoming thaw and freeze cycles it's going to be a slippery task getting to and from the truck.

It's warmed up to a sweltering no degrees this morning.

My large concrete driveway has a good incline
I have to wear YakTrax cleats on my boots while clearing it otherwise it’s a 100% chance of falling

I like ice melt but it zaps concrete
Spalling, which I never saw in So CA

Depends on the concrete. They make concrete safe stuff now.

It also depends on how heavy you lay it down. Most people dumps the stuff on in thick layers, creates a lot of heat too fast for the concrete. Turn the broadcast down and apply it a few times.

I'm all dirt so it's not a problem for me.

I use it on the roofs in a tube sock. Fill the sock and tie it off. Place the sock at the edge of the roof perpendicular to the roof line where the ice starts to form.

Why do you put the filled sock perpendicular to the gutters and not inline with the gutters to cover more length?

You very well could but that's a lot of ice melt and socks.

The idea is to create a point for the water to run off instead of freezing before it has a chance to run down the gutter.

On roofs I rake for others I usually place a few at different locations.

The snow will melt from the heat of the house and as it runs down to the outside edges it'll re-freeze creating the dams. Bad juju for the roofs. If the home has gutters, place a few in there as well so excess wont freeze and pull them down.

In an ideal world, the roof would be shoveled and swept after every snow, and every home would trap 100% of it's heat not allowing for the snow to melt underneath the pack in the first place.

I got in a bad spot after the first big snow having to go help other people every day, didn't get a chance to rake the edges of my roof now I have a 4" dam I can't seem to break off.

One more thing about being perpendicular. Leave 2 or 3 inches hanging off the roof to allow the water to travel down the sock otherwise you run the risk of refreezing into ice cycles.

I talked to a guy there awhile back. I was checking into when my stove was likely made, and had told him I need one of their cannons to guard my driveway.
