I love everything about this build - great color choice and combination of mods & parts.

I like to see a rifle get a new lease on life after not being used for so long. Last year, I took out my .444 for the first time in almost 40 years. I forgot how fun it could be shooting that beast and better yet, the smiles it gave everyone I let shoot it.

I also have a 336 in 30-30 that doesn’t get shot a lot. Maybe it could be a candidate for something like this? Time will tell!

OP, welcome back to the fold.

I like it.

I've got an 1894 in .44 mag that I have waiting to have the barrel shortened but I didn't know what direction I wanted to go with it. I like the handgaurd and I'm thinking of getting a marlin dark stock for it.

There are many companies making parts for lever guns. Lots of options these days.

So apparently my 336 3030 is in a spot of bother, because it's a barrel band version it's harder to convert.

Explain.

My eyes are bleeding!!!!! But I’m one of those snob purists. actually for a super modern tactical lever gun that was really well done. A Democrat politician would want to ban that just by how it looks.

Mine is a barrel band model as well. I used the Midwest Industries hand guard and you have to use the adapter they sell for barrel band models.

Hand guard: https://midwestindustriesinc.com/mar...lok-handguard/

Adapter: https://midwestindustriesinc.com/mar...guard-adaptor/

Ranger Point Precision also makes a barrel band model as well: https://rangerpointstore.com/marlin-...-black-silver/

So there are options.

Also, my rifle is a "Texan" model with the straight stock. That also limits things....maybe...the Chisel Machining stock I used will work on the straight stocked 336's as well as the pistol grip models.

I can not comment on the other stocks on the market.

Oh....if you do shorten the barrel, you/your gunsmith, will have to open up the barrel band a bit because the taper of the barrel is larger closer to the receiver. Not a big deal if you know what you are doing.

Now that you have the big loop lever, I want to see you spin cock it like Lucas McCain in The Rifleman or Ringo Kid in Stagecoach.

Thanks Randy.
I just wanted something clean and functional. I agree some of the lever gun builds are a bit much for my taste as well, but that is the great thing about firearms….thee is something for everyone.

Never understood the hate among gun owners….we can be our own worst enemies.

BBB, did you have to swap the Marlin trigger plate? I just noticed you started with a straight-stocked Texan carbine, and your new buttstock has the *palm swell* or *pistol grip* curved stock, which, on factory guns may have a curved trigger plate...

No…the Chisel Machining stock will work with the straight or pistol grip models with no modification.

Well...got a chance to go sight it in. I was hoping for 1 1/2"-2" group at 100 yards.

With my eyes, and 6X scope....I was very happy to have it shoot like this.

Off the bench with bipod and rear bag using Hornady Leverevolution ammo.

With the brake it recoil like a .223.

Nice shooting!
Would be fun to run it on Richard Mann’s Scout Rifle Drill at fifty yards: (on a 5” plate) one round from each position: standing, kneeling, sitting, and then prone. Par time = thirty seconds. Only hits count.
A good rifleman can do this on demand, any repeating action will work. Your lever rifle would be an excellent choice.

I'm glad to see lever guns getting some scope rail and forend attention - a highly underrated modern utility arm, especially in the classic .30-30 caliber.

BBB, it took me a couple looks to appreciate what you did. Damn nice build.
Being a sort of purist, I still like it. And it shoots well! What's not to like?
Glad to see you back.

Thank you.
As I mentioned, I needed a project. So this was just the ticket for me.
And actually using it now instead of it just sitting around gives it a new life.

This is exactly why I don't check the gun forums here. That looks awesome! I have my dad's old Glenfield I may have to do this to. He never shot it, I never shoot it and he almost gave it away a few years ago but I kept it instead. It's practically brand new and in excellent shape but doing this to it would make it more appealing to shoot more often, at least for me.

Why not? There are thousands of these Marlins around. Outside of sentimental attachment, these Riggs are plentiful. And I think your Dad would rather have you using it and enjoying it rather than just sitting there.

If you do do it….post up pics.

Why not check these forums? Because I get inspired to spend money! No sentimental attachment here. My dad wouldn't care what I do to it either! Dammit, looks like I'm spending money!

I have a 1950 336 SC 35 Rem that I keep thinking I need to do something fun with. I want to send it to Lee Hadaway at The Arms Room for a takedown conversion, but I also want more. I have another one just like it that I'll keep original.

Do you think leaving the barrel at 16.5" would allow for another round in the tube?

That's actually tempting, but then I wouldn't have an extra 35 to do as I wish with, now would I? 😆

Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

I don’t think so. The 5th round now is still about 2/3rds of the way from going in.
So it would probably take about 18” mag tube to load 5 rounds.

I wanted something short and handy. So I was willing to give up some capacity to get it.

That’s really nice, it looks great and is a hell of a shooter.

It’s a great big world, more then enough room for purist and tacticool and that rifle is tactiCOOL in a big way.

You just converted a Marlin 336 in 30-30 to a deer assault rifle. Unique and interesting concept to be sure. It might have a use in the woods. I dunno! At least you didn't use a Winchester 1873 to perform this transition. Using an 1873 would have been akin to dressing Teddy Roosevelt in drag. Congratulations, I actually like looking at your "FreekenGun".

Marlin 336Y (“youth”) model and the 336 “dark” both had ~16 inch barrels and claimed 5+1.

Ugly.

I love it.

It's now a useful tool.
