Default 2022 Santa Clara County Sheriff election mega thread

Here are the two candidates that will be running for the Santa Clara County Sheriff position. Others may join. Not sure what the status of the current Sheriff will be. It may become more clear on Jan. 12th as her pending legal matters unfold. Both candidates below also have various social media accounts.

Filing Window: Feb. 14, 2022 - March 11, 2022
Election Day: June 7, 2022 as part of the California Primary elections.

Kevin Jensen: http://www.kevinjensen4sheriff.com
In his last campaign in 2014 Kevin was pro CCW and wanted to set up a fair system to issue permits. Not sure of his current stance.

Christine Nagaye: http://www.nagayeforsheriff.com
Can not find any information as to Christine's stance on CCW and issuing permits. Asked her on social media and she did not respond.

Promise you that the female will be against or at least keep the red tape up on CCW's ... 99% of them are Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity wonder jobs who will follow the current political trends like a hawk...

NM.. I found this on her page... I WAS RIGHT... """"We need outreach to our Black, Indigeous, People of Color (BIPOC) communities. Our Asian neighbors and our LBTGQ+ communities need to feel safe. Our black and brown communities need to feel safe and valued.""""""

She can go FKK herself..

Palo Alto's Chief is a maybe about running- but my guess is he's a "hell no" WRT firearms of any kind;

Robert Jonsen pulls papers to form campaign committee, weighs challenge to Laurie Smith
by Gennady Sheyner / Palo Alto Weekly

Palo Alto Police Chief Robert Jonsen addresses seniors at the Mitchell Park Community Center on July 12, 2018. Jonsen on Tuesday said he is exploring a run for Santa Clara County sheriff. Embarcadero Media file photo by Veronica Weber.

Palo Alto Police Chief Robert Jonsen is considering entering the race to replace Santa Clara Court Sheriff Laurie Smith, a six-term incumbent who is fending off accusations of corruption and misconduct.

Jonsen, who has been working as Palo Alto’s police chief since January 2018, on Tuesday pulled papers to form a committee to run for sheriff. He told this publication, however, that he has not yet made a final decision about whether to enter the race.

Retired San Jose Assistant (and Acting for a time) Chief Dave Knopf has also filed paperwork and is in it. Reportedly "a good guy", not heard his stance on 2A as yet.

Knopf withdrew. Came to his senses on the BS that comes with being Sheriff.

You SClara Co folk need to get organized and active. Only 4 months until the election. Smith may not run again and if she does she’s more vulnerable than ever before. Don’t squander this opportunity.

Here is a response from the Kevin Jensen campaign posted by another Calgunner in a different thread.

Thank you for your interest in Kevin Jensen for Sheriff 2022 campaign and your question regarding ccw’s.

It has been widely reported that the incumbent won't define her concealed carry weapons policy amidst allegations and data that strongly suggest that the small number of quid pro quo permits granted were linked to contributions and favorable influence.

Kevin has made the commitment to a legal, responsible and fair process with regard to CCWs. Here is Kevin's response:
"I recognize how important this topic is to the residents of Santa Clara County. Unlike the current situation, the policy I plan to implement will be a legal, fair, transparent and consistent process. I have researched the policies and spoken with Sheriffs and staff of other jurisdictions and will be implementing the best of what is working across the State of California. This means an applicant must first meet all of the requirements set out by law. Each application will be evaluated using a fair and transparent process with the applicant being informed of approval or denial within the timeframe required by state law.Independent oversight will be put in place, and neither political influence nor campaign donations will improve one's chances of securing a CCW permit.”

Kevin’s plans include a comprehensive county-wide crime prevention program, focusing on proactive community policing model, education (includIng: internet crime, identity theft, school safety, bullying, gang prevention), and ahome safety component with a strong emphasis on firearm safety to include education on the laws, best practices and critical importance of the safe storage of firearms.
Thank you,

Kevin Jensen for Sheriff 2022

Here are two more maybe candidates:

Robert Jonsen: Palo Alto Police Chief 2018-Present (May retire to run for Sheriff) Menlo Park PC 2013-2018, LA County Sheriff department 27 years. Doesn't sound 2A friendly and may have unfavorable baggage for Menlo Park & Palo Alto

Sean Allen: SCC Sergeant with 30 years of service, website is limited www.seanallenfor sheriff.com

Judge won’t seal testimony in Santa Clara County sheriff case

https://sanjosespotlight.com/silicon...il-grand-jury/

Quote:
A San Mateo County judge has refused to seal a portion of civil grand jury testimony in a public corruption case against Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith.

Judge Nancy Fineman denied a motion on Tuesday to seal testimony given by insurance broker Harpreet Chadha to a civil grand jury. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office argued that some of Chadha’s statements should remain sealed because they could otherwise be used against him in a pending criminal bribery case.

Fineman noted the only possible exception to complete disclosure of the testimony is if there’s a reasonable likelihood it may prejudice a defendant’s right to a fair and impartial trial.

“Sheriff Smith, in this case, has not objected to the release, and wants it released,” Fineman said. “Both of the third-party defendants, undersheriff Rick Sung and Mr. Chadha, want it released, and realize the implication that it has.”

Santa Clara County sheriff responds to corruption accusation

https://sanjosespotlight.com/santa-c...il-grand-jury/

Quote:
“I am gratified that the civil grand jury dismissed the most serious allegations,” Smith told San José Spotlight. “For the counts remaining, they are specious at best.”

Last December, a civil grand jury formally accused Smith of granting concealed weapon licenses to donors and political supporters and lying about accepting gifts. The accusation followed months of probes into Smith’s management of the county jail system by the Board of Supervisors, which voted no confidence in her leadership. Smith is also a likely target of the California attorney general, which is investigating possible civil rights violations committed by her office.

The grand jury appears to have considered but not pursued several other counts, including an allegation that Smith received a bribe from someone applying for a concealed carry license. These counts were crossed out in the accusation.

Best option I see is Kevin Jensen. Awesome guy! 2A and CCW friendly when I talked to him. Overall great candidate in general IMO.

Statement by Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith
Quote:
I want to thank the residents of Santa Clara County for allowing me to serve as your Sheriff
for the last 24 years and in the Sheriff’s Office for the last 49. We have accomplished much
since I was first sworn as a Deputy Sheriff’s Matron in 1973.
I am especially proud that we have made significant progress and are now considered a
premier law enforcement agency throughout the state. I thank the women and men of the
Sheriff’s Office for their dedication and service. We truly have the finest staff that serve
with honesty and integrity.
This job will never be finished and it is with some regret that I announce my retirement
from service at the end of my term in January of 2023. My decision not to run for reelection
was very difficult. There is much still to do, but the interests of the people of our County
must continue to be our first priority.
As a public official, sometimes you make powerful enemies. Decisions to stand up for a
victim of a gang rape, oppose a Judge who leniently dealt with a sexual offender because of
his privileged status or taking on other elected officials to protect the public and a former
reputable newspaper because it was the right thing to do makes you a target. I accept that
fact.
The truth and evidence is absolutely clear. I have always served the people of Santa Clara
County and have never engaged in any behavior that would warrant the media animus,
false legal narrative, or political attacks currently in the public domain. I have always
dismissed these attacks for what they are - specious attempts by unsavory political
opponents in retribution for serving the public with honor.
I am reminded of former San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales, whose reputation as a leader is
finally being vindicated by history, even as he was viciously attacked and falsely charged
while he served in office.
My plight is no different and I am confident history will show the first elected woman
Sheriff to serve in California, was not only honorable—but her accomplishments will speak
far louder and be remembered longer than the false stories that will be repudiated by
truth. I believe in truth.
Yet, in the final analysis it would be unfair to the voters of Santa Clara County to force them
to make a decision in the middle of a drama not of their making. Let the facts come out, let
history record the result and let us continue to focus on providing the highest level of
public safety service.
Thank you again for the opportunity to serve

So you're posting that the 3 candidates will be physically present at the Sheriff Candidate Forum?

Well??

Assuming you kept video of entire event, please post it on YouTube and then embed it in the various SC Co CCW threads including this one please.

Or at least an after action report of how the event went and what the candidates said re CCWs.

There was a very good turnout at least 100 attendees. 5 candidates 1 moderator 11 questions selected prior to the forum. No questions from the audience. Each candidate had 1-2 minutes to answer depending on the question. At the end there were tables for each candidate so people could talk to them.

I feel there are three candidates at the top, Kevin Jensen, Bob Jonson and Christine Nagaye. Sean Allen and Anh Colton do not appear to be strong candidates. If all candidate stay in the race and Kevin Jensen can get 40-50% of the vote, the three remaining will dilute their vote percentages and would not surpass Jensen. Just my thoughts. I think Jensen and Jonson are the top runners. Jonson has 27 years with L.A. County Sheriffs, 5 years as Menlo Park chief and 4 years as Palo Alto chief.

Christine Nagaye several times while answering questions made it a point to stress that she "is a life long progressive democrat" and also added at one point "and I am a gun control advocate". That was not well received by the audience. She did state that she wanted to establish an online application for CCW permits but when asked about what her good cause was she stumbled and could not commit to anything.

The video isn’t posted yet. But they have posted the candidates’ questionnaire responses. In reply to a question about restoring trust after corrupt CCW practices, Jensen talks in vague generalities, not specifics about CCWs much less about Good Cause.

Quote:
Trust was broken with our communities and stakeholders over the last several years by our Sheriff. Morale, staffing and retention are at all-time lows and employee flight from our agency is at an all-time high. Our jails are unsafe for both staff and the incarcerated. With the trust I've earned from over three decades of ethical management, I will lead the change in our culture from the top by in depth internal scrutiny, investigation, facilitated interactive review and higher order values training, 360 degree evaluations process, and community involved bridge-building. I have received many comments that some employees will return, hold off on retirement, and prolong their careers if I become Sheriff. I will establish the philosophy of being ethically accountable, willing to collaborate as a local and regional partner to other organizations, and service oriented in the mission of protecting and respecting all whom we encounter.

1. Earning trust by modeling integrity and positively changing our culture and agency to better serve our communities 2. Partnering with our Board of Supervisors, Community, and other agencies to bring Mental Health solutions that will provide services to those in need to reduce incarceration, and appropriately care for those who are incarcerated. 3. Utilize the vast relationships and resources I have developed through 37 years of service to Non Profit, Law Enforcement and Service Organizations in local, State, and National Executive Leadership roles to bring Best Practices and solutions to the critical issues we face with Crime Prevention, Community relationships, Homelessness and Mental Health treatment.
Without a restrictive GC policy and restrictive CCW issuance there is no incentive, no temptation of using or soliciting a bribe to get a CCW.

Candidate Colton may not be eligible to run as she is not a certified member of law enforcement as is required to serve as Sheriff. This was in an article in the Mercury News. Further investigation and an official ruling is pending.

I will admit, I am supporting Kevin Jensen, knowing him as a personal friend and work associate for over a decade and have many members on this board also supporting him for his "overall" qualifications and not necessarily a CCW/Shall Issue only stance - which no candidate could win in this county due to the 3 to 1 voting advantage of anti-2A block vs our 2A block.

I think he is the "change" we all need and he needs to get the "smart" vote of the anti-2A block to win. Unfortunately that's our hard reality here in Silicon Valley.

In regards to Colton - she didn't really address the final question in the questionnaire which was:

13. The city of SJ recently passed several gun control measures but critics have stated these laws unfairly target law abiding gun owners and do nothing to address violence in the city. If elected, how would you respond to these laws and what will you do to reduce major violent crimes in SCC?

The most telling from Chief Jonsen in his answer was: "I have always advocated for greater gun control"

Candidate Nagaye wrote: "This is coming from life-long Democrat and a gun control advocate. I don’t believe these laws will stand up to the legal challenge even with a very liberal 9th Circuit. I advocate for common sense gun control measures. I believe the NRA creates more problems than they fix, but I also believe law abiding citizens have their 2nd Amendment rights as much as I made disagree with their need to express themselves that way."

Allen: "I do support the ban on ghost guns as there is no reason for law-abiding citizens to have them. I support
common-sense gun laws."

Kevin Jensen: "I am not convinced that the recent liability insurance requirement and fee will stand due to constitutional challenges, and they don't provide any solution to the huge problem of guns obtained illegally."

These are just segments from the questionnaires so I do encourage you to read them in their entirety.
