We talk a lot about how slow CA County Sheriffs are in getting CCW permits through the system.

For a variety of reasons, I wanted to apply for a non-resident CPL in the state of WA. They are a shall issue state, and the application process is completely automated. Should be fast, right? So, it turns out that in WA, THEY want to do the fingerprinting and you have to have an appointment to get fingerprinted. The NEXT available appointment was in January of 2022. So, they are at least 7 months to get a permit. It makes the 90 days in San Diego seem positively speedy...

Wow, they must have changed their process or something; last time I applied for WA, I simply walked in Seattle PD. No appointment needed, about two weeks after that my permit arrived through the mail.

In what city/PD are trying to apply? If you don’t mind.

That don't right. My was done on a walk-in basis with no appointment needed.

What Washington county do you live in?

He is not a Washington resident. When I got mine from the Spokane PD, it was walk-in. When I moved from CA to Idaho, it was also walk-in to change my address. When we moved into our new home, it was online to do the address change because of COVID and I got one of the new plastic cards. I think that he needs to look at other agencies.

This was Spokane County, and yes, it was a non-Resident permit. And the application process was identical applying with the PD or the SD...

The system is all online now, and all except fingerprints happens nearly instantaneously. However, they require a Fingerprint appointment, and the next one available was Jan 2022.

The point of the post was not really to say anything about Washington state.

Really the point was more about showing that the initial permit can take a lot of time in other states too, not just ours.

(So, I was disappointed the thread was moved. It really is a local topic, in spite of the example used...)

When I applied for mine it took a total of five minutes. Background check was approved and CPL in hand within 30 days (which is the deadline for resident applications).

Sorry to hear that. The process has definitely gotten bogged down, at least in some parts of WA - probably the bigger cities and possibly because more people are applying.

When I got my first resident permit 5 years ago, I walked into the Clark County Sheriff's Office with a completed form and got my permit in 10 days or so - a paper card with no photo. I didn't need an appointment. Clark is a populous county just north of the Columbia River from Portland OR. Today, even residents need an appointment for a first application, but not a renewal. I submitted my 1st renewal application 6 weeks ago and still have nothing. They said it could take 60 days.

Yes, WA requires prints. When I got mine probably had to wait for 15 minutes to be printed because they were printing for other permits and licenses. That was before COVID. Have you checked with both the Sheriff and Spokane PD?

I got mine from the Sheriff in Wenatchee. No appointment necessary, but they did have special times; and I was in and out in about 10 minutes. They took my prints and money and I had my permit in less than 2 weeks. That was last August, during the chinese virus shenanigans.

I wonder if you can get printed at the post office passport department?

I know I had a problem since everyone seems to have their own print system. School (substitute teacher), CPL, firearms sales all used separate systems and don't "talk" to each other.

There is a huge difference in different counties. Even different cities.

I've heard of folks having to make appointments and wait weeks.

I got in and out in 10 minutes walkin application and prints done at county sheriff office. 2 days later CPL came in the mail.

Under state law they have 30 days to issue/deny a resident permit or 60 days. With Covid closing down the fingerprint portion for awhile, and now departments still having Covid regulations to abide by the process has slowed down. Some agencies are using contract companies to handle the fingerprint portion then everything else is online to get stuff sped up. When I first applied for a Washington CPL (north west agency) I walked in and it was ready 6 days later. That was considered slow. Now we lost the ability to bypass the waiting period with a CPL with handgun purchases. So I’m debating if I will renew it next time it’s due.
