Default AR15 CMMG .22 Upper

Refresh my memory: is the AR15 Lower restricted as CA. Compliant as long as it’s assembled as .22LR? Or is it exempt because it’s configured as a .22LR Carbine.

Rimfire rifles are exempt from CA assault weapons laws for rifles.

Rimfire pistols are not exempt from CA assault weapons laws for pistols.

Therefore...

A semi-auto rimfire rifle can have any feature, as long as it does not violate CA generally prohibited weapons laws (DD, MG, SBR, SBS, silencer, multi-trigger burst activator, etc).

So as long as I keep the .22 Upper “married” to my M4E1 Lower with a Collapsible Stock I’m GTG?

Quiet gave you the bottom line of the CA reg's.

There have been many threads about 22LR AR's using a standard lower e.g. what if the lower still has the buffer bolt and spring in it? Or would be be “less risk” if lower caliber was marked 22LR or at least multi caliber? Or is the CMMG conversion bolt good enough? I think bottom line is just never mate a lower with regulated features to any center fire upper.

I was happy to get a CMMG dedicated upper in 20” “rifle” barrel length back when parts were cheap and readily available a few years ago and swap a few parts to make a retro-ish rifle. Nice that it takes a regular M16 sling and bayonet. My only regret is not getting a few of the 25 rnd black dog mags during freedom week.

Highly recommend getting the pressure cap with the CMMG 22LR upper.
https://borebuddy.com/product/22lr-plug/

I found it improved reliability and, should you separate the upper and lower, it is very obvious which one is for the 22LR.

If you want to build a sick AR-22 then I would suggest:

1) Beyer/CMMG dedicated barrel
2) CMMG (RTB) dedicated bolt
3) Bore Buddy pressure plug
4) Bore Buddy CH insert
5) Better-Mag magazine adaptor
6) M&P 15-22 magazines

Then build out using whatever milspec parts you have laying around, or with gucci parts if you have $$. The above combo will create a super accurate build that has full AR15 function such as LRBHO.

I did a steel shoot with my build last night and it was a blast.

AR-22 home build > Tippmann > S&W IMO

That’s interesting that .22 upper has the Colt 9mm smg gas deflector and rebated ejection port cover.

You can buy those deflectors yet as add ons for the ARs Some people say they help empties from hitting you. I have never found it to a problem..Maybe they are more useful to the leftys that shoot them..

I like the retro A1s

Here is my M16A2 clone I assembled, with GI parts and a M16A2 clone lower and CMMG BCG, Barrel..But since I am no longer in CA, mine has the Franklin Binary..Lots of fun..

Slowly collecting parts to build my dedicated. I like the look of the A2 clone above but will build a copy of my M4 ARs I have.

If anyone needs a dedicated 22 barrel, Primary Arms has the CMMG 16" M4 profile with FSB and the same in a 20" gov profile. Right around $210.

Curious..Why NOT..They are 100% legal..They are not Full Auto Machine Gun lowers in any way shape or form, takes a little more than a roll stamp to do that trick...

10s of thousands sold legally..Not against the Law in any way..Well maybe in CA... By your thinking the Vendors that manufacture, stock and sell Clone Lowers like PSA, Brownels, and many others, mine came from PSA..Are all going to go to Club Fed soon, or would have already been there..

I do not mind the looks of the Classic M16A1, M4, I just think the A2s are the sexiest looking of them all..,LOL

There is no rimfire exemption to CA make/model banned assault weapons.

Rimfire pistols are not exempt from CA assault weapons laws for pistols.

A semi-auto rimfire pistol that does not have a fixed magazine and has restricted features is considered an assault weapon. [PC 30315(a)(4)]

Restricted features on semi-auto rimfire pistols that do not have a fixed 10 or less round magazine:
1. Threaded barrel.
2. Second handgrip.
3. Shroud.
4. Accepts detachable magazines outside of the pistol's grip.

Semi-auto rimfire pistol that have a fixed magazine with a capacity of greater than 10 rounds is considered an assault weapon. [PC 30515(a)(5)]

Fixed magazine being an ammunition feeding device that is contained in the firearm and can not be removed without disassembling the firearm's action or that is permanently attached in the firearm's magazine well.

Therefore...

Since a semi-auto rimfire AR pistol accepts magazines outside of it's grip, it must utilize a fixed 10 or less round magazine to be CA legal.
