Made some “wood” magpul furniture today

If this isn’t in the right place, mods please move it. Some paint and some stain. Turned out half way decent. Pretty easy to do. Happy with the results. Looking forward to putting the set on an Ak.

Thanks for the compliments, guys. Here’s the process

1. Purchase magpul furniture set(I used a Plum colored set).
2. Degrease/clean the set using a liquid dish soap like Palmolive or Dawn(put on a pair of latex gloves at this point as well to avoid prints/dirt).
3. Spray paint the parts using Rustoleum Warm Caramel Satin and let dry for an hour or so. When spraying, keep your can 16” or so away and let it cover in a multilayer misting technique as you move the can back and forth, as opposed to a thick, stand still spraying technique. Otherwise you’ll have runs in the paint.
4. Using a white bristle chip brush, apply Red Oak 215 Minwax wood stain. Use just a bit at a time and spread it evenly. Your brush strokes should be spreading the stain as opposed to adding more and more. Also, make long, horizontal strokes that mimic a wood grain. Apply another coat if needed. I did two coats to get that color/grain. Let it dry overnight. It’ll be sticky/tacky the next morning so be careful handling the parts. Try your best to not touch the stained parts much.
5. Spray parts with Rustoleum Matte Clear. Be very careful once you spray the clear. If you touch the parts before they dry, the paint and stain will rub right off. I had to completely redo the stock twice because I rubbed my glove on it.
6. Let dry for an hour.
7. Spray another layer of clear coat. Let dry for a couple hours.
8. Enjoy!

I think you did a great job. We would all love to see more pictures of those put on a rifle when you get a chance. (Or at least as much as you can considering you may have to put a fin grip on the simulated wood pistol grip if you live in California and you're dealing with the BS laws. Although I guess you could make a simulated "wood" fin grip as well.)

Personally, I'm not sure if I like the look of a simulated "wood" magazine ( it almost reminds me of a Planet of the Apes vibe to have a "wood" looking magazine) but all the other parts I would take in a heartbeat, if they are a durable coating.

Regardless, your end result looks very similar to real wood..

I'm bumping this to the top for two reasons.
One, I think this is the type of project that a lot of here people could do and I know some people would like the look of simulated wood, if they can pull it off as nice as this And it's a durable finish that doesn't have to be repainted regularly.

The second reason I'm bumping this to the top is that I edited my original post above just so there wasn't any confusion where anyone thought I thought this was real wood ,

I did known it was simulated "wood" but I'm still not sure I like the look simulated wood or even real wood magazine.
It's just something you don't normally see, no matter how far you go back in this planet's gun history.

To each their own, and have it your way especially if you are the one making it.

Yep...the mag was kind of an afterthought. I had finished the furniture set and saw my magpul 10/30 in my box of magpul stuff. Thought why the hell not.

On a side note, I’m trying to figure out what ak to put the set on. I own a bunch of Zastava/Yugo ak’s that this furniture won’t fit on. I also have a Century VSKA(I know I know) that I don’t feel is worthy of this furniture. Any thoughts on a good ak that will take this furniture? I’m assuming any stamped receiver would work, right?
