It was perfect! No mud/no rain. Pretty windy though...

If you haven’t been before please go 5mph once you turn into the access road... the grooves in the dirt road are brutal! I could see someone breaking down because of violent vibrations.

Not a lot of people out there either! Some what suprised.

I drove a Fwd suv and didn’t have an issue. The dirt was a little soft at the shooting site but nothing to be worried about. Guys driving in front of us had a old 4Runner and an older 2wd Tacoma and they were doing just fine

Question- has anyone heard of any violence up there? I personally carry my rifle on a sling when I reset targets because I’m worried someone could run up and rob me. Prob just Paranoid but with all the new gun owners and how free it is out there it makes me extra cautious of my surroundings.

I was at Tumey's about a month ago and it was PACKED. I mean...literally people would drive in and have to drive back out. Panoche is much better because access is further in and "harder" to get it. IMO, Panoche is worth the extra 30-45 min to get in.

I've been to Panoche and Tumey's countless times and never had any issues. However, on two occasion there were some shady characters coming through. But we were in a large group all strapped up so they can try at their own peril. I would be more worried at Panoche than Tumey given that Panoche can be much more remote. I think it's just a bunch of urban legend that get passed around regarding cartels going there. However, I believe I did read something about how a body was found at Panoche once and they believed that it was related to some hispanic gang. Don't quote me on that one.

This is really good advice if you're in a car and don't do much dirt driving. In a even mildly build truck you can air down once you get off the pavement and bomb everywhere at 45. It's just funky washboard.

Do they lock the gate at night? How would one get help if you get stuck or break down?

There are good number of shooters out there, more during weekend and good weather. You have to come early to find a good spot.

If you have Verizon, you can call someone for help or even post on Facebook. If you have t-mobile, bring camping equipment with you

Went out there found a great spot in the whole 8 hours I was there saw maybe 4/5 cars not much people. No police when I was there. But irresponsible people left all their brass and shotgun shells at the spot... ended up picking most to all up and packed it out. Some other kid came after me and idk if he left a mess or anything I hope not.

Anyone interested in heading up Thursday the 18th or Friday the 19? I have a new precision rifle I need to sight in.

Familiar with Panoche (my friends are all out of ammo) and looking to shoot between 300-800 yards. I have steel targets ranging from 4 - 18 inches and everything else needed. April is right around the corner...

Having absolutely no experience here or anyone showing me, can anyone show me on a map where exactly I should go if I go to Panoche? Terrain shouldn't be an issue, I have a truck with 4x4.

Stay on the roads.

Don't park more than 15 feet away from the roads.

Don't drive past the big yellow signs that say not to drive past them.

Drive on the roads until you find a spot that has a backstop and a place to set up.

Park 15 feet from the road, set up, and shoot into the backstop.

Pick up your trash.

Pick up the trash from the ****heads that were there before and didn't pick up their trash.

Drive on the roads back to the gate.

In case I wasn't clear, stay on the roads and don't drive anywhere you're not supposed to.

The access road is right near Mercy Hot Springs on the map.

It took 10 mins for 2 of us to clean and pickup everything. Do your part and leave place a bit more cleaner than it was when you arrived.

Went twice in last month and planning to go one more time before it closes temporarily.

Happy shooting

I've never been there either and wanted to explore a bit. Not much info on the exact location on where to setup. Internet is pretty tight lipped on exact gps spots. What's your availability? I've been itchy to get out and sling lead for the past few weeks. DM sent.

Check your back stop

People on every ridge or in every valley when it’s busy.

Watch shooting over the ridge

Pack your trash and get as much of the last buffoons trash picked up too.

It sucks

I’m always down for a range clean up day and will gladly tow a dump trailer out there if folks want to rake up shotgun shells with me.

We're planning to go next weekend. 27th Sunday. DM if you want to join.
Yes, Definitely will check backstop. I earmarked a good location with several possibilities and looks good from Google Earth 3D. But we'll see day-of. I subscribe to the philosophy of leaving cleaner than when we arrived. but maybe not to the extent of a dump trailer. South Cow is an embarrasment for the 2A community. Last time I was there, it looked like a landfill complete with small appliances and brake discs.

When do they usually shut these areas down for target shooting? April? May?

Sometime between October and April depending on how much of a fire hazard they think the area presents.

Yeah, I'm not being a dick. I think it was shutdown in mid Feb a couple of years back? Then didn't open till Dec? Only to get shutdown sometime in late Feb or early March.

is it shut down for "shooting" or shut down for "driving"? Like, a motivated person with a desire to hike in from the gate for 4 miles and lightweight ammo, could he......
