SKS style weapons are fixed mag by design so legal in Cali in original configuration...bayonets are fine as well (probably thinking of expired 1994 AW ban)..no grenade launchers.

The SKS is one of the most ideal rifles to own in CA. Grab one if you can.

I tried to do a private party transfer of a Yugoslavian SKS at the gun store and they said the bayonet had to be removed, otherwise it was an assault weapon.
The Yugo SKS has a muzzle break and original bayonet attached to the barrel. I tried to remove the bayonet and could not remove it with a screwdriver. They said the law was changed a couple years ago. I haven't kept up with all the new laws, but is a Yugo SKS with a bayonet attached illegal to sell now? Is it an assault weapon now? Thanks |

You should have went to Norcal Gunvault 1/4 mile away. The very last places to PPT are Turner's, Sportsmans Warehouse, Big 5 and Bass Pro.

Years ago, Turners in Pasadena turned me away for a PPT when I was selling an SVT-40.
"Assault weapon" they loudly claimed. Have not been to a Turners since.

Fixed Mag guns were never AW's. Most SKS's sold after had bayonets, it had to do with how they were imported. Most were imported as C&R's. Some I believe from China were not, and thus had for be in "sporting arms" configuration so the bayonets were removed.

The only SKS that could not be sold with a bayonet was the commercial made SKS. The Chinese SKS that come into the US were originally milsurp and had the bayonet. Later the Chinese made some new ones just for export on the commercial market these include the paratrooper model that was never used by the Chinese military. The commercial ones had the restrictions that they could not be imported or sold with a bayonet.

I think this particular model may have a issue in CA, unless modified

Prior to leaving CA I was modifying an SKS (furniture, not the firing mechanism or magazine), this was around... 2009? IIRC, what I was reading at the time was:
- The bayonet was not legal and had to be removed (Chinese SKS). - However, machining off the bayonet lug to streamline the front end was also illegal? This was Federal, not CA, however. Question as a new guy: Is there a good forum heading to post in about what needs to be done to legalize some of my items? I don't want to wind up in the wrong vertical and start a flame war or something. |

yea i remember those days of 922r compliance there was an article that said if you want to use a detachable magazine with your sks you must make it so its importable so you had to change the stock to a thumbhole or montecarlo design and remove the bayonet lug so much confusion came from one atf comment about its illegal to attach a bayonet to an sks that came in after a certain date many thought its illegal to have a bayonet attached |
