I'm new to gun ownership, and have been a local resident since '91. I'm waiting for my DROS period for two purchases. I bought a new CZ P-01 from River City and completed a Sig P-320X Compact PPT from a fellow CalGunner at Sacramento Gun Club. I had excellent service from both stores and though I'm no expert they both seemed to have a pretty sizable inventory considering the current climate. A fellow CalGunner also reached out to me here after my very first post, and he works at Sac Gun Club. I have to say I was very impressed with that facility. Two positive experiences so far.
How are the other stores in the area? I've read good things about MTG Firearms in Elk Grove, and The Gun Range in North Highlands. How are their inventories currently? Anywhere else that is recommended? Who usually has the better prices? Last edited by Cup of Cheese; 06-21-2020 at 7:41 PM.. |

Was in your area yesterday. You must have waited awhile to even get in the store. Here’s what I saw:
River City Gun Exchange has a super long line... The Gun Room in Elk Grove was mostly packed with shooters. Mostly long guns and revolvers as of now. Wild Bill’s in Elk Grove has a ton of inventory. My cousin DROSd a used Walther P99. Lots of consignment but expect to be priced a little higher than other shops. MTG Firearms currently has low inventory and lacking manpower, but they seem pretty quick to order. The Gun Range on Watt Ave is always busy but they have fantastic customer service. NorCal Gun Vault is another good FFL. They have a fantastic staff. I always make a loop in any area for gun stores in case I find something cool. The Sacramento area has lots of them to choose from. Overall, the area has really nice folks and decent variety. You owe it to yourself to visit them all. Sacramento Gun Club is easily the most professional in terms of facility and staff.

I showed up about 30 min early for both places. River City I was able to get right in. Their store is so small and they are limiting it to 8 customers at a time. I waited a little longer at Sac Gun Club, but it wasn't long and they have a nice area outside to sit. |

Wild Bills was doing PPT when I went in although they weren’t too thrilled. They asked people to take a number and wait by the door, but a lot of people showed up out of nowhere and ignored the number system.

I don’t think any gun shop is to thrilled to be doing a DROS unless they are the ones selling you a gun.
Depends on what you want to do - indoor gun range? Buy ammo or parts? DROS? Also depends on where you live. I don’t really want to drive all over town, especially to DROS a gun. I’ve had consistently good experiences at sac valley shooting center, gun range, and MTG. I use a home based FFL to order ammo. |

I was at River City this morning picking up my CZ. I showed up early, and by the time they opened the purchase line was turning around the corner. The picking-up line was probably 15-20 deep.
They did have cheap 9mm ammo |

River City must be a mad house, I havent been there in months. You gotta be a glutton for punishment if you go there. PreRona they were busy but at least they are fast once they get to you. Their PPT policy is a joke. Both buyer and seller need to email them their IDs and then they set up a time for them to come in, who knows how long it takes for them to respond.
I had the longest PPT ever at Sac Gun Club. They are awful. I could see how the novelty of taking 2-3hrs to buy a gun would appeal to a total newb, but anybody that has bought a gun before is going to be majorly disgusted with super slow service, made up "laws", and pure FUD they spew. The worst place to buy a gun beside Wild Bills and Guns FISTING and OS. I usually go to The Gun Range but again, insanely busy and BS policy on PPTs. They only do 5 PPTs per day first come first serve and only Tue-Thurs. They used to be very PPT friendly, now they have the worst PPT policy of all shops in area. Surprisingly, Turners on Florin has been the best place right now. No made up PPT rules. Just show up, take a number and they take care of you as fast as they can. I've had excellent service from them since they opened a year ago.

Shooter’s pro shop in Roseville. Did 2 separate PPTs within the last 30 days and I’ve been in and out within 20 minutes during the initial paperwork and on pickup.
Great group of people that don’t act like a-holes like at the other places I’ve been to recently.

another vote for RIVER CITY GUN EXCHANGE , they are one of the fastest for buying and picking up, they know what they are doing, no added BS
WILD BILL's is also a nice shop, plus the Gun Room indoor range is across the street, so you can go shooting and buy a gun in the same trip. |

Before COVID, Gun Range were awesome for PPTs. Nowadays, I have no idea since every time I drive by my favorite shops, I see a long line of people.

Replying to an old thread, just wanted to add $0.02.
One update is that The Gun Room in Elk Grove has closed down for good (covered in another thread). It's now March 2021 as I write this and I just did a private party transfer (pistol and shotgun) at Turner's on Florin and will say they are still a great place to do your PPT. I interacted with at least four different staff people, and all were outstanding, knowledgeable and professional, not to mention friendly and personable (and I'm a former retail store manager who appreciates good customer service). It was about 11:45am when I arrived at the store, maybe half a dozen customers milling about, and we were able to start the paperwork within five minutes of arrival. COVID update - masks still required and temp check upon entry. It was my first time at Turner's and they appear to have a nice little shop. I felt bad being there only for the PPT, so did end up spending another ~ $50 on something for my reloading bench. It was an item I wanted but didn't "need", but I wanted to throw them a little business in appreciation for their service. The reason I went to Turner's is because both MTG and Wild Bill's background systems were offline and they couldn't do PPTs...and my seller was en route to Wild Bill's where I'd been just a few days before (my fault, I still should have called ahead that day). Seller was flexible and it all worked out perfectly. |

My favorite two stores for PPTs are The Gun Vault in Rocklin. They take appointments.
The other was The Gun Room in Elk Grove. Bummer they closed.

Two more votes for River City; my father and I went down to buy some guns this January, and they were polite, professional, and had a plan to arm everyone they met.
On another note, my father has a bunch of old receipts from an "Old Sacramento Gun Store" or "Old Sacramento Arsenal" (or something like that) from the 90s; I'm not sure if they're in business or not. |

Great shop with large inventory of C&R weapons. Once a year, they opened the warehouse for cosmoline soaked, pallet loads of weapons. One of the first to bring in Korean AR-15 patterns. City regulations and BS shut them down a couple of decades ago. True loss. Whilst we reminisce,. Simms hardware (28th and J Street) was the best hardware/gun store in town. They sold air guns and had a cardboard tube mounted along a wall so you could shoot the guns literally on the showroom floor. In the basement, they had a full time gunsmith and range. Some regulars were allowed to pre-fire (?) guns before purchase. ![]() Now, you can go to the dentist or get your eyes examined.

Old Sacramento Armoury was at 2215 J Street. Brings back great memories. The owner was ready to retire and move on so he closed the shop and sold the building. He has since passed away. Back in the 80's you could buy a brand new chinese SKS for about $100 and a 1200 round case of ammo for the same. IIRC Simms Hardware closed in 1988. For those of you who are familiar with gunsmith extraordinaire Bruce Gray, there is a connection to Simms.

One of my favorites has been closed down for a while now. The Cordova Shooting Center. Was a convenient place to do PPTs. If you don't mind the big box store feel, there is a Sportsman's Warehouse in Rancho Cordova. Not sure if they are AR friendly or not.

Finally. Yeah I was in there one weekday afternoon a couple months ago and there was no line. Things are slowing down a little bit but im sure Sat, Tues, mornings, and an hour or two before closing are still completely insane.
Also noticed they are charging at least $1/rd for centerfire handgun ammo. That appears to be the only way they can slow demand enough to actually keep anything in stock. Turners pistol ammo is still less than $1/rd but as a result they get cleaned out within minutes of receiving shipments.

That's good to hear about River City. I'm not in the market for ammo but maybe their C&R selection would be worth a look. Sure there's lots of new buyers over the past year, but I'm guessing most will skip over the "old rusty guns" in favor of ARs and Glocks. I've actually found a few good things there, an IBM M1 carbine, a Long Branch No 4 Mk1, 1903a3, a P-38, some Italian stuff, Mausers and Garands, and of course the usual Mosins & SKS.
Yeah I miss Cordova Shooting Center too. The range was a dump, but it was convenient & I picked up so much brass!
