Hi guys,
I'm new to this forum, I live in San Jose and looking for a place I can go shot coke cans and stuff. I would like to take my lady with me to teach her to shoot, and she get scared in shooting ranges because of all the noise around. So I would like to ease her into it by going into isolated area and doing it fun for her. Anyone knows what is the closest BLM area to san Jose or any other land allowing recreational shooting? Thanks, |

Panoche Hills, Tumey Hills if you want to do a day trip, or Williams Hills. The last one is a little rocky and it might be hard to find a good spot. Panoche Hills might be restricted due to fire season. Call them before you go.

How do I know if an area is allowed for shooting or not? I've heard some of them has fire alert but I can't find any info of weather shooting is allowed or not. I tried to call Tomey hills but the number I have on Apple maps leads to somewhere else. |

Shooting is normally allowed at Tumey and Panoche. I've been shooting there for many years, but it is closed to shooting at this time for fire safety reasons and I'm pissed.
I live an hour away and shoot at Tumey often for years all year round. There are gates that normally close on 4/15 but you can walk in and shoot. This year was very different when on Aug 1 came the first total ban on all target shooting...link below: https://www.blm.gov/press-release/BL...oting-July2018 In September I sent emails to BLM asking if the gates will open 10/15 and target shooting can continue as it has in the past. It might...or in might not according to the quote below...again this is different than previous years where we could shoot year round. "The target shooting restrictions will be lifted when the fire danger subsides. It may be before or after mid-October." Normally the gates open on 10/15 but here is a 10/12 press release saying the gates will open but target shooting is still banned: https://www.blm.gov/press-release/bl...vehicle-access So, keep an eye on press releases at the link below or you'll waste a trip: https://www.blm.gov/news?body_value=...%5D%5Byear%5D= Sorry for the bad news. |

I doubt you'll hear more than "The target shooting restrictions will be lifted when the fire danger subsides." Personally, I see this as an over reaction. There have been fires but I would not be surprised they are all due to steel core surplus ammo and exploding targets like Tannerite. Copper and lead do not spark. BTW...when/if Tumey/Panoche does open it would be best for you to go on a week day. Weekends will have more people taking the best places if not early. I prefer Tumey over Panoche as much of Panoche has been restricted to autos some years ago. The place here labeled as "Tumey Hills Box Canyon" at this link would be good for your first trip. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Tu...4d-120.6587832 |
