We traveled the length of 1n09 a few time the last 6 weeks. The trash at several spots along the way was shocking....disturbing...... and then the reactions move to anger for the abuse shooters have done. Red carpets of shotgun shells, endless mats of rusted steel shells, busted up tube TVs and refrigerators, broken glass everywhere. Some of this strewn in an otherwise tranquil creek. We stopped at 2 locations to collect shotgun and steel shells gathering almost 300 pounds of those in 2hours and we knew going in it wouldn't make a dent but was still satisfying to do something no matter how small. If shooters would pick up the equivalent of their own detritus that would help. THey would have to do no more then bend at the knees to find plenty to choose from and might get lucky and find some brass to keep.
We called the Ranger and he mentioned this organized cleanup in August with Calguns being involved which only made it 1.5 miles in. So yeah, count me in next time there is an organized cleanup party. If your interested in joining me and my wife for some wheeling and cleanup let me know here or IM. |

Sweet! I will advise when. It will be soon working around rain if it comes. Id like to clean up the stream we didnt touch last time.
FYI just some interesting data trivia......... Weve collected ~307lbs so far of expended shotgun and steel cases, the majority of which is .223. Removing the mat of shells exposed some brass underneath and that brass represented bout 0.45% of the total weight. Included in the 307lbs were 6 unused shotgun shells and maybe a 1/2 dozen variety of other unexpended rounds. Steel recycling for the non shotgun steel cases will get you a paltry $.02/lb. To get that you would have to go through the effort to separate the shotgun cases so best just to dump all (short the live ammo) in the city garbage pickup.Talk to you soon! I went up there in spring last year and it was a disaster. We hauled out 2 trash bags full of mostly shotgun hulls and trash. I like doing this road with my boys in our jeep and stopping and popping off a few. Not many places close where we can do that legally. It's a shame but I'm afraid it will end up closed like most of the other spots. Keep it posted on a clean up date and I'll try to make it.

Thank you so much. My wife has also been in contact with the Ranger responsible for that area and he said there is to be an organized event in very near future and will keep us advised. I will surely pass that along when we know.
But in the mean time we will still make trips to 1n09 and haul out what we can and would love you to join us . I retired last year and prefer to go weekdays but anytime is game for me Ill advise when we go next and feel free to do that same. BTW 1n09 is currently closed to target shooting and plinking and was well posted as such at the trailhead at Hwy 330. We went there to target shoot and with the closure ended up collecting spent shells and went to outdoor range in Corona but there were folks actively target shooting that day on 1n09. |

Thanks for hauling out all that stuff.
1N09 used to be a great place to drive the backroads and shoot. But these days, there are just soooo many !@# holes up there its not safe to go. And many of the jerks are shooting and you know dang well they are not going to haul out the propane tank and other crud. So no wonder the head ranger is so eager to close it to shooting so early every year. It seems shooters are their own worst enemy all too often.

Is 1N09 the area before Running Springs? How about posting some signs reminding shooters to haul their trash out or do you think the ones that don't care would just shoot those up anyway?

Signs won't fix stupid and inconsiderate people.

We took a drive down 1n09 yesterday. Expected but still disappointing, the areas we had cleaned up just a few weeks ago are again carpeted with brightly colored shotgun shell husks. And while 1n09 trail head is clearly marked "no shooting" there were active target shooters.
We did stop at a particularly abused site with a active creek flowing across the road, picturesque except for the fluorescent shells under water and the surrounding. We cleaned up the what was in the water and to about 30 feet from the road but the shooting detritus extends much farther back up the ravine. that location was about 3 miles from 330. Coordinates are N34.17682° W117.11569°. We will keep you posted if/when we hear from the Ranger who said an organized cleanup was planned for very near future. |

You shovel the husks onto the screen and shake, the dirt and debris falls through, leaving the husks. Wider screens and larger frames have been successful during a few clean ups.

We visited City Creek yesterday and did some cleanup. Ive attached a map of the west end of City Creek showing the shooting areas (official or not) and these are marked as a red flag. We stopped at a particularly neglected target shooting site labeled "Shoot Alley Mess" on the map. Its a nice shooting spot, with left over targets placed to about 40 yards up the hill. We pulled out about 140 lbs of primarily steel casings and shotgun husks and that was a small fraction of the debri there. Still it was satisfying to do something no matter how small.
