I will continue to posit that the buzz and anticipation over these 1911's will far exceed the satisfaction of actual acquisition of one of them. When the boards were all abuzz over the last batch of M1 carbines, I threw my hat in the ring and acquired one.

It was a beater, a disappointment, and I sold it.

Yeah actually I have other things I want more, a Henry Golden Boy in 22lr ($399 at Walmart here), one in 22mag and a RIA 22mag pistol.

For the 1911s, It will be important to calibrate expectations and only jump in if one understands what they are purchasing... history.

How did CMP rate it? Rack Grade? Field Grade? Service Grade?

Were you familiar with CMP Grading Criteria before you purchased the carbine?

It was a field grade tagged as a service grade. I contacted them and they refunded me the difference, to their credit.

Yes.

I think this is fairly unusual for CMP. I have heard CMP customers say that their guns were in better condition than they expected per the Grading Descriptions but never before a complaint of a gun in worse description than described.

Glad to hear they tried to make it right.

This was posted on another forum by a collector I would say is in the know. Meaning I trust what he has to say.


"I just today saw photos of 7 of the pistols....a few were recently released from the DOD to select police departments (why I don’t know). But they are all heavily reparked (possibly several times...I actually thought it was cerakote at first ) and beforehand were sandblasted so heavily you almost can’t make out the serial numbers on them. Some have post war slides/parts. They’re arsenal marked with the date they were redone....most appear to be redone in the mid to late 70’s. I was going to get one but will likely pass, even without the C&R BS. One thing is for sure, they definitely will not give original or wwii/near postwar rebuilt 1911s currently available a run for their money. I think they will have their own little market though"

Not saying it couldnt have happen but cant imagine why the Army would show them to just certain Police Depts??????

Sorry for the confusion. 1911forum does have pictures posted of DOD guns shipped to police departments, multiple threads and examples. Most are refinished with rough parkerizing couple times over in good rearsenaled condition.

Recon Marines kept using them up untill the springfield mc operator .
They are probably beat pretty bad but, they should be serviceable

Coming from CMP via DOD they absolutely should and likely will be serviceable. Whether they have any collectable value is another thing. I am not in a rush to buy one, but I'm sure they will have a waiting list and sell out as quick as they get them.

They are like new in condition. The problem is that they're on the second or third time of being like new.

I'll still buy one. I wasn't alive in the 60s when you could mail order a 1911 and don't plan to miss out this time. Even as a completely bead blasted and reparked during the Reagan administration rebuild, there is history there.

I would guess this would be service grade if they are actively being used by police department. I would assume function would be fine. Here are the pics for those that can see them.

I watched some of the Rock Island Auction today and I do not think I saw a single government issue 1911 sell for less than $1500-2500, but I am no expert in these and RIA is NOT a place to bargain shop anyway. But when CMP says $1000 minimum price for mixmasters they are not uncompetitive. Not saying I want one covered in a half inch of park!

No way would I pay more than 500.00, if that is a true example of what they will be. That would be stretching it too, in hopes of getting something salvageable. Would need to be completely stripped and refinished. And hope atleast some of the markings are salvageable afterwards.

Just going to be too many unknowns here I think. But if others are willing to be the initial guinea pigs, I will see what they get first.

I would rather pay 1000.00 for a very nice Hi Power. Or almost anything else that has value.

They have started to ship and from what I have seen are very nice, well worth the asking price

The Parkerizing reminds me of the finish on the Garands imported by Blue Sky in the mid-1980s. There were a lot of them on the racks at Reed's on Alum Rock Ave the day I bought a then-new Ruger Mini-30.
