And they're up and running.

New state of the art indoor pistol range to the left. Law enforcement only.

Same old range to the right. Same benches. Same peep holes. New backstop.

Rimfire combined with rifle. 100 yards only, even for rimfire. They are figuring out how to put 25/50 rimfire targets, since the backstop is still 100 yards away.

New price structure that may change. Used to be $10 for the night. Now $10 for 1 hour and $20 for the night. Who spends 1 hour at the rifle range?

Anyways, its local and I'm glad they up and running. An alternative to shooting weekend days at the other ranges.

Nice, thank you for the report. Really sad it's the same exact thing with no improvements whatsoever. Goes to show how they implied otherwise many times and then didn't give a damn about how it looks that one is the best shooting range in the world and the other doesn't even warrant a new coat of paint.

Just glad they opened it again, so we are right back where we started from with 3 years of smoke blown up you know where, and essentially a 100% price increase.

LOL, I wonder how much taxpayers paid for the range "remodeling". I remember someone from here got into a debate with them on Facebook and the Sheriffs office said this: https://www.facebook.com/smcdsa/post...%3A%22R5%22%7D

Range "remodeling" made possible by some prominent donors. Public projects don't get done in the fashion as the indoor, law enforcement only, range.

They also seem to use the indoor range for the CCW qualification.

what does the $400/year membership dues get you? Also is this pretty much an auto decline for non LEO?

CCW qualification for who? My understanding was that ccw permits in SMCO are pretty much impossible to get.

None. Monday was very light. Only about 4-5 shooters were there on Monday. Plenty of available long-rifle lanes. I'm probably going back Wed night.

Default Wow, just Wow!

All the delays, the wait, the construction.....and it's still a dump.
Los Altos Rod and Gun has me spoiled with friendly staff and scenic location. Still just $20 for the whole day and ammo prices that better than most ranges.

So some rifle stations are open and others shoot through a mail slot? Can you choose which one you want?

Can you shoot .300 magnums?

Very disappointing to see the condition of the place when it was closed for so long, they could have put the new bullet traps in a week or two.

The .22LR rifle stations are "open", while larger calibers have to shoot through mail slots. The only caliber limit I am aware of is 50BMG http://www.coyotepointrpc.org/public-shooting

Ah Coyote Point. A place where you feel law enforcement breathing down your neck, and watching your every move. Law enforcement doesn't really want you there, and tolerates your very presence.

I've only been twice (opening day and tonight). The only LE I saw was on opening night. I was introduced to Sgt. Pronske who was curious as to why I was taking photos. He was very cordial not eyeballing or vibing shooters.

There are about 300 permits in the county and the SMSD do the class and range qual themselves, so that breaks down to ~10-15 ppl / month for the class.

I went back last week for the first time since it closed.

The centerfire rifle range is only slightly improved. There's a new backstop at the far end to catch bullets. The field between the shooting area and the backstop has been cleaned up quite a bit.

The shooting area is better lit now, and there's a magnet hanging at every station to check for steel ammo. (I'm not sure why this is necessary--might have been something the Sheriff's Dept wanted.) You still have to shoot through the mail slot, but I actually don't mind that as much anymore. Less concussion and noise from other shooters, plus we're in the flight path of SFO.

The old bathroom has been knocked down and instead we can use the bathrooms in the new shooting building. They're really nice.

Range fees have increased from a flat $10 to $10 per hour. I was merely asked if I was going to shoot more than an hour and paid $20. I suppose that means you can shoot for three hours for $20. All other fees are pretty much the same.

Staff is very friendly and nice.

I don't mind the lack of major improvements, but that was a long time to wait for relatively little.

The new indoor shooting range is permanently off limits to regular shooters. That having been said, the facility is a white elephant because it costs $350 an hour to use it and none of the departments want to pay that much to shoot.

Well, you guys could do what San Diego county folk did and start a county level organization to pressure your sheriff to issue more CCWs by liberalizing his Good Cause (GC) policy. Unfortunately, anti sheriffs seem to only "see the light when they feel the heat" of a viable contender for sheriff.

Ever since last Sept, "hundreds" of members of San Diego County Gun Owners PAC have gotten approved for CCWs, even people who had been previously denied by Sheriff Gore for inadequate GC. That's because a viable challenger, Dave Myers, a gay Dem, was drawing away Gore's conservative supporters by saying he'd accept "self defense" as sufficient GC. Gore responded by liberalizing issuance in an attempt to maintain support among conservatives/GOP/libertarians. In 6 weeks, we'll find out whether he reacted in time....

https://sandiegocountygunowners.com/

Some of the info at the next link is out-of-date. It will be updated soon, with even more good news re. Gore and his new issuance practices!
https://sandiegocountygunowners.com/ccw/

If San Mateo gunnies want CA CCWs, you'll have to organize and fight to get them! Form an organization. Start a FB group (easy and free). Pass out fliers at local gun shops, ranges, IPSC/USPDA clubs, IDPA clubs, PPC clubs, etc. to build up membership. LEOs can carry, but ask them to think of their parents/spouse/SO/adult children, would they want a CCW? Be creative and take the initiative. Contact the good folk at SDCGOPAC and ask them for advice. Ask to form a San Mateo branch/chapter. If you do nothing, nothing will change....

More work is on the way. It was pushed off in order to get the range opened to the public sooner.

In terms of time, did you fail to notice the big, new building? I'd like to know how that could have been put up in "a week or two".

Also, it took "a week or two" just to excavate and pour the concrete footing for the bullet trap. It took another couple of weeks (if not longer) to install the trap itself. And none of that included shipping delays, work crew delays, and the most fun of all - the county permitting process.

Funny you mention that. The gentleman who organizes the pistol matches sent out an email a couple of days ago. He's getting ready to restart pistol matches - right now he's dealing with logistics.

If you want his contact info, send me a PM and I'll get you in touch.

Well, we have a little bump, Coyote Point Range will be closed to the public for 2-1/2 weeks. Closed from June 13th but will reopen on July 2nd. Sheriff needs for training those 8 nights.

Thanks for the heads-up on the range closure, some of us have to choose our range dates very carefully.
