That place was always so weird in terms of information and attitude towards the public. Kind of a bizarre LEO attitude, had some strange situations over the years where people were just treated poorly. Like an attitude that it was their range and they were just letting us use it out of the goodness of their hearts and we should be kissing their feet. No, I don't even know who "they" is, I assume it was the Sheriff.

Anyway, more cryptic stuff and no information as usual. It's as if no one cares there, and they disdain the public.

It sucks, the indoor range is LEO only. Thanks alot for taking our tax money and acting like it's a private country club. Don't hold your breath on the outdoor public range being "remodeled". Just some tech yuppies and their rich donor people along with the LEO's are going to get to use it, not us low level nothings.

This is the way our society is heading in general. Plus they have to lead us on Facebook for years with a bunch of cryptic BS and then flaunt their new country club in our faces while casually informing us we won't be allowed in.

Just got into it with someone on the Sheriff's office Facebook page:

Me: I find it really sad that we had a perfectly good public range for decades and enjoyed using it responsibly. Then we were told it was going to be closed for a short period and never given much info. Then we get to see pictures of a Taj Mahal for LEO only. What are we supposed to say, thanks? When will the range be open to the public again? Why doesn't our tax money pay for access? Does no one care?

SMCSO: The range had to be remodeled due to safety reasons and the money to remodel the range was donated by a local philanthropist. So yes, I will say "Thanks".

Me: And what does the public have to be thankful for? We just lost Chabot and there is no guarantee this range will be open, according to what you are "hearing" it seems unlikely anything is going to happen soon. Treating the public like second class is not a good policy.

These guys are dicks. They were always dicks to us for the past 15 years I have gone there, and this is just proof of the attitude that they don't care about the public and have nothing but contempt for us. I waited 2.5 years to be told I will not be allowed on the range? **** YOU.

sad news. this was the place I first shoot as a child in the early 90s. I got first class treatment from the silhouette pellet gun guys too one day. this really upsets me I noticed it becoming unfriendly towards the average citizen but I didn't know it was this bad.

Anybody have an answer for 'Fitty's question? It had me scratching my head when I saw that rule too.

So you can't use a 9mm Beretta PX4 on the pistol range because it's a centerfire handgun, but I could fire the same ammo in a CX4 carbine on the rifle range?

BTW, this update was posted on the 19th on the CP website.

Phase II, the improvement of the outdoor 100yd range to be used by both LE and the public is underway. This will be completed some time in the first quarter of 2018. Please check back for updates which we will post when available. Thank you for your patience.

Nice, I spoke out on their Facebook page and they gave us a date for the first time in years. First quarter 2018, not going to hold my breath.

They rescinded centerfire pistol, according to a range person who worked there, because rim fire people complained it was too distracting during their "practice". The Sheriff's office jumped at the chance to shut it down. I believe that was 10 years ago?

I just want the mail slot on the rifle range to go away, it was super annoying and pointless. Hopefully some of our gripes reminded them that the public will be vocal and angry if they don't treat us a little better. I spent alot of money at that range over the last 20 years, so they at least could act as if our tax dollars and our $$ at the gate meant something. Right now it's as if the Sheriff is mother Teresa or something for letting us shoot there.

It's still crazy that the 8 million dollar Taj Mahal is LEO only. LEO and any tech yuppie who is friends with Siebel, I am sure. If there was some interest, I think we should organize a petition to allow the public to shoot there (they can charge a premium, make it so it's only some days of the week, etc.) but let us shoot our pistols for god's sakes.

What were the shooting associations there called? Who was a regular there that was CRPA or someone who might be able to help us here? I would be willing to broach the issue with Michel and Associates for some advice on how we could politely but forcefully ask the Sheriff to not turn the range into a country club for LEO and rich tech yuppies.

No change to notice posted on CPGC website. I visited over a month ago and person to whom I spoke said "Febraury". Gee, guess I better wander by, should be open, right?

The range is closed for renovation until further notice.

Thanks for the updates. They seem to be "In Progress" forever. If there is a plan to keep it going forever so that everyone forgets, then we can't let them forget. To me the issue is also how poorly the government deals with issues of public property that had been used publicly for 50+ years.

OPEN LETTER TO THE CPRPC
Are there any actual Coyote Point Rifle and Pistol Club members who are on CalGuns who can answer any of these questions? The lack of communication about what's going on, the challenges affecting building/clean-up progress, etc. are what is causing this thread of frustration with the public. Clubs/Volunteer Organizations only thrive through volunteerism and it would behoove you to reach out more, either here or for starters: your website or your Twitter account. Your BLOG hasn't been updated since 2016! I'd suggest starting there as well as here.

Regards,
Tom DelMundo

Default Something will be announced about range by end of next week

I was asked to post something about Coyote Point Range and that is why I'm here. The range, has been closed for about a year to receive some much needed repairs. The San Mateo County Sheriff Training Facility has a
new indoor range for LE and was completed the end of the year. it occupies what was the left range and the indoor range will be for law enforcement use only.

http://www.smcsheriff.com/support-se...firearms-range

The right range was used for rifle and will be the only side open to the club and public, when it opens. There are 20+ lanes for shooting and we are not sure of the final details. Should know more next week and will post then.
The basic rules will still apply, I expect rimfire pistols only and centerfire rifles from the benches, Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights from 7:00pm to 10:00pm just as before. I do know that there will be a no steel ammo rule added to protect the new target trap that was just installed last week. RSO's will check all ammo with "Magnet" to insure compliance.

Hope this helps...The classic "2 weeks" applies...

Nice, this is good news. No timeframe but it seems like the old centerfire range is back *at some point* with a new steelcore rule. No problems, I can work with that.

I'm as happy as anyone else to see things moving along. Los Altos is nice, but it's too far just to put a zero on a new scope and maybe throw rounds downrange with a pistol or another rifle or something.

Default Coyote Point Range Progress.

Glad to hear that we can go back in about a month! No steel core rule was there before the renovation so not new. So is the no centerfire pistol rule. I dislike the old tiny window you shoot from. Hope it is changed. There was only about 10 rifle lanes so 20 is definitely an improvement. Some of the older ROs are really nice yet strict on safety. I will go for sure.

That's great. Any word on the design of the range? Still confined to the mail slots or did they make it better?

Looking forward to range opening again. Nice to have something in area. Always thought mail slots in plywood were a joke but if your trying to prevent people from lobbing rounds over backstop/berm/hill at end of 100 yard lane, you have to do something.

Mail slots are still there. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind those is, as I've heard several explanation over the years - noise baffling, muzzle sweep control, and elevation control. I'm going to look into that further an ask some questions about whether or not they can go away now that the new trap system is installed.

Considering that no such thing previously existed on the rimfire side, I see a potential argument for eliminating them, but I also suspect I'm missing some part of the reasoning.

I'm also going to discuss the "single target" rule. That came about mostly because enough people were poor marksmen (or just idiots), and ended up shooting things that shouldn't be shot. Again, the new trap may alleviate the need for that rule.

Yesterday some club members worked on the bases to hold the target stands, and the template for the target stands was located and should be put to work today. I'm working out the new RSO schedule and orientation, with the goal of "FUD FREE ZONE".

I want all the RSO's, new and old, on the same page with the rules, policies and procedures. I'm also constantly chanting "We are not LE", which means we don't 'police' the range to make sure your stuff is legal/compliant, with 2 exceptions that the Sheriff mandates. First, we have to check for steel core ammo (steel case is fine) and if you're shooting an AW, we asked in the past to see the reg. letter.

With BBAW, that's going to shortly become untenable, so hopefully we can drop that one. We're there to run a range. Aside from immediate safety issues, if someone is a problem, we call PD and let the people with badges and guns deal with the problem.

We're getting there. I want it open as much as the next person.

Yes. The new bullet trap is AR550, not AR500, so it should withstand even more punishment from 5.56x45 and 7.62x39/51/63.

Since there may be an overlap of 2-3 months from when the range opens to the registration deadline for Bullet Button rifles, how will you handle those that are waiting till the last minute to register?

We're getting there. I want it open as much as the next person.
Thank you for the detailed info Ed, sounds like you are doing a great job. The multi target thing was also always a bit of an issue, but I am willing to follow all rules if they continue to mandate it.

The range has been closed so long, I had to check my now-outdated copy of the SOPs and policies. All we've asked is that you have a copy of the letter in your possession. We do NOT ask to see it.

If that information is posted and available, then it's not even something RSO's need to ask. If you bring an AW, have a copy of your letter with you (which is wise anyway). I'm adamantly against us doing 'bed checks' of anything except magnet-testing ammo.

If it's during the grace period, and since there is nothing to technically ask about, then I see zero problem having an as-defined AW, unregistered, if it's not yet past the time for it to be registered. And that's the approach I will publish for RSO's. Unless the SO requires us to act differently, that's probably all there is to it.

Please note I corrected myself in another reply a few minutes ago. We do NOT ask to see AW reg. letters. The policy has been that folks with AW's need to have a copy with them (which is a smart thing to do in this silly state).

BTW, do you know of any LE ranges in CA that share access with the public? I think CP is unique in that regard and I don't know of any dual-use ranges like that. But if you do, please PM me. I'd like to talk to those other ranges and learn about their policies and procedures. There could be ideas that can make use of CP more efficient and productive.

I don't know any dual use but I have talked with Greg (the range manager at Los Altos) and he has an amazing set of insights and a specific philosophy for ranges that makes that range extremely nice. Granted they are private, but I am sure Greg would be willing to talk with you. If you like I can ask him for his phone number and PM it to you.

Is Metcalf/Santa Clara mixed use? When I was there and heard fast shooting, I was told it was LE on the action range doing training. I wish the SFPD would share their pistol range at Lake Merced.

I would have said Chabot but that just made me cry a little. They did all kinds of LEO work there, not sure if it was considered sharing though. I think Los Altos does some LEO from time to time, but obviously private. Maybe Sunnyvale?

I think San Leandro might be mixed use.

My guess is that the mail slots are designed to restrict muzzle elevation. I have noticed relatively low flying commercial airliners flying in the background, perpendicular to the range, while walking out to the target line.

Yeah with the new AW rule the mail slot might be a good thing. Since every featureless semi auto will be using muzzle brake. Even before the repair ROs there made sure you stick your muzzle out of the windows to minimize disturbances .

First day of shooting is 4/2. "Week of" 4/1 is correct, where one refers to Sunday as the start of a week vs. Monday.

Opening is still scheduled as planned.
