what a laughing joke, they close it for fire season... but hunters can still shoot and hunt??? but no target shooting??? so who is to say you're target shooting rocks or coyote? this state is ran by middle school aged kids at best, I swear. regardless, id be surprised if any folks outside of these forums actually read bam news letters, so is there going to be a roaming trooper, bam officer, or fish and game patrolling the roads to ensure no target shooting is being done? how will they enforce it?

FYI,
Not knowing about the new fire restrictions, I drove down to Tumey Hills yesterday, and there were new signs posted all over the place, along the road and at every gate and fence access point along Panoche Road. There were new, large "No Shooting" signs along Panoche Road and at all the usual turnouts and shooting places, and smaller signs posted on every gate, stating the shooting restrictions as well. It would be impossible to say you didn't notice the signs. I drove from end to end along Panoche Road, and the entire place was completely empty. Not a soul around and not another car on the road. It was dead quiet. Actually kind of creepy. I've never seen it this empty. Any shots would be heard for miles, and would probably draw a ranger in no time... and being the only person out there, it would be pretty hard to say it was someone else. Given how easy it was for BLM to shut down the whole place overnight, this may be the beginning of the end of shooting at Tumey Hills. |

Hunting is allowed because, while the chances of accidentally setting something on fire in the area from target shooting is small, the chances of accidentally setting something on fire in the area from hunting is even smaller because the volume of fire is greatly reduced. It's a risk they are willing to accept, target shooting is no longer a risk they are willing to accept.
