Is there a spot to leave garbage (Tumey and/or Panoche) or do we take it with us home? I have no problems with the latter but I would like to contribute to the cleanup and may not have enough room to haul all the extra garbage out.

I'm sure there is a garbage can at the restrooms when you enter Panoche, but no large garbage bin that I recall. I'm guess if you left tied up garbage bags next to the restroom, the ranger might haul it out, maybe.

Stop by a dump(ster) on the way home.

I don't recall a garbage can outside the restrooms or around the picnic table.

Unless you are doing a major clean up of an area, and you let the rangers know ahead of time, don't leave garbage bags or anything else.

If you brought it in, you can bring it out.

I don't specifically recall a garbage can either, but it would be a bit weird to have restrooms and no garbage can.

Yes, best to not leave any garbage behind, but if he is willing to pick up more garbage than he is able to haul away, I would think it would be better to do that.

He was however asking about picking up additional garbage, otherwise I would definitely agree that you haul out what you bring in.

Agreed on the taking more out. It's a mantra in the off road community

I was just out there for New year's day, all alone, in a Mercury Sable, and had a blast! There was quite a mess so I came home with loads of brass and a trashbag full of shot hulls, targets and steel cases :/ Only ran into a few people this time, none shooters, and they were all friendly. I get Cell service up to the first gate but nothing past that. Bit of a drive but a good place!

You didn't get gang raped by cartel members that wanted to steel your guns and ambush you when they thought you shot all of your ammo?

Default Panoche & Tumey Hills BLM questions???

Was out today with the fam had a great day! My oldest got to pull the trigger on his (as long as he doesn't do anything really stupid) .22lr BLR birthright.

The place I like to go was absolutely trashed . We spent 2 hours picking up hulls, brass and cans, shot 30 minutes, ate lunch wandered around and split. I put some big stuff in the back of the xterra but will have to fit it into my trash can over the next few weeks as I have room. What is the fascination with shooting brake rotors?! Christ on the cross just buy some AR500 already!

Boys had so much fun picking up "bullets" almost felt bad telling them it was a game lol.

Bummer. Why can't people clean up after themselves.

Shooting brake rotors is a bad idea. AR500 isn't that expensive, and lasts forever, unless you shoot a .300WSM @ 100 yards. Oops.

Btw, I think I was parked next to you at SSZS 5.5. We were in the black F-150.

Boy Scouts will be out there this weekend for their annual camp and shoot. They usually clean up several of the spots as part of their service project.

I have been there fairly recently, (October 2014). I can say this much for certain. If you like wild and desolate California, then these places are definitely for you.

I went and spent quite some time there in middle of October by myself. I eventually wound up at the New Idria mines in San Benito County. I may post here, in the OT forum, an account of my trip to that area.

If you want to go shooting, then I recommend the Tumey Hills BLM area near the Silver Creek access point. I went there and just near the entrance to the Silver Creek access point, there is a big hill that appears to be a backstop that many people use for dumping their .223, shotgun, .308 and of course .22LR.

I saw big piles... I mean scads of empty range brass and shotgun hulls there. The hill was pretty chewed up from all the folks shooting there too.

If you want to go shooting out to 600 yards, then you will need to take the New Idria road to the Griswold Hills region. I saw lots of Lapua .338 and .30-06 spent brass there.

I think most of the posters here may have never been to this region of California ... plenty of FUD going around. The place is way too dry to grow marijuana. It also appears too desolate to have any kind of clandestine chemistry stuff going on too. Anything out there would really stick out like a sore thumb. It would be really difficult to hide anything out there.

But ... that is just my opinion. I know that I will probably get flamed for saying stuff like this.

You really ought to go check out these areas. I really enjoyed my trip there.
Who leaves .338 brass behind lmao

Haha a few people came through, A guy out sight seeing with his daughter just communicating his intended path didn't cross my firing line, and some hippies in a Subaru asking how to get to 5. They asked if it was cool if they stopped there a bit and I told them sure I would take a break to pick up, they saw my AR on the hood of my car and decided they would keep on keeping on.

I always keep a pistol loaded on me out there but to be honest the only thing that concerned me was very early several sheep got spooked and ran quick up the hill. You will find plenty of sheep remains out there so the 4 legged critters are something to be aware of.

Just to be clear: both Panoche and Tumey Hills do not allow cross-country traffic in motorized vehicles. Stay on a marked road at all times while driving. Park within 15 feet of the road. Do not drive on any road within the wilderness study area in Panoche (except for P20). Those rules are posted redundantly throughout the area. No OHV's allowed anywhere on the properties.

The keeping on the roads does kinda suck, there is slot of areas I'd like to go scooting around out there. I heard that a guy named Cooper( ?!) has a particular dislike for dirtbikes. This I saw while perusing google sites trying to figure that issue out. New Idria is still closed right , as is Clear Creek?

Clear Creek is open by permit. The gates are closed at New Idria/Jade Mill but you can get the combo (call the Hollister office) after getting both the vehicle pass and a clear creek acec permit online at recreation.gov. You need to get an acec permit for each person/for each day. The vehicle permit is good for 7 days. It's pretty nice in there, if you don't mind asbestos. There are no dirtbikes allowed - only licensed vehicle staying on the approved routes.

New Idria is not BLM land.

Went out today, had a good time minimal rain. Got compliance checked by two rangers long gun low ready contacting officer bare hands.
They physically pushed the BB on both our rifles and visually looked over our mags, smattering of the regular ilk. Talked for a bit and hit the road.
Birders were everywhere on the main drag. View as always was stunning.

Lol find the truck

It was a lot cleaner this time, some folks have been helping if it's anybody on here thank you. I pulled a shot up drawer safe propane tanks and pot along with the usual 5 gallon bucket of brass.

I've encountered rangers every time I've been out there and I've never gotten more than a wave unless I went over to ask them something. Did you guys look particularly gangster or something?

How is that even legal for them to check?

I've only been to Panoche once so far, and so far I haven't run into any park rangers.

Default Panoche & Tumey Hills BLM questions???

Well some may have different thoughts but when faced with a gentleman holding a real assault rifle pointed at your toes I felt compliance was best. They announced they were performing a "compliance" check, if we were the only ones, did we have other guns on us and if we did were those guns loaded.
I opened my hands letting the magazine I was loading fall to the ground and raised my hands. My buddy saw me raise my hands, he dropped his mag and raised his hands turning around. I answered their questions and walked away from our table. They approached pushed at the mag catch, eyeballed our mags and started to chat.
They said they heard automatic fire as the reason they came down to us. Stated they left their truck at the top because they Diddn't want to get stuck.
Gangster as an overweight white guy with his magpul single point sling, blue ems pants can be I guess? Lol
Legal I don't know? I'm above the board with my guns and mags so I didn't have anything to hide. I certainly don't have the money to fight a bogus charge which could happen if I get snotty/constitutional with them.

I hear ya there.

I have nothing either to hide either, but still not a huge fan of have my firearms "voluntarily" searched, because some ranger makes up an excuse to check my compliance.

I doubt I'd put up much resistance in the same situation, but I'd sure feel a bit violated.

If anything I was a little pleased, seeing as they walked all the way down the canyon they now had to walk all the way back up the canyon. All for nothing.
I think the "automatic" fire they heard was my 8 round mag dump after stringing some shots and confirming my optic had shifted and was no longer level to the gun. I was ticked and displeased. Still you can tell when someone goes cyclic and it's a far cry from what I did.

If you are hunting/target shooting on public land in California, expect (or prepare) to have your gear inspected. There are so many rules and regs on state and fed properties there are quite a few segways into looking through your gear, at least the stuff out in the open.

Great pics of Panoche!

I've been to Panoche a bunch of times. The rangers as far as I can tell will only drive around in white JK Jeeps. I've never been approached.

If I were a ranger I would only attempt a check on the main road for fear of being out gunned and gunned down.

Great pics of Panoche!

What, if anything, can one do to minimize the time and anxiety of the encounter?
Second, with the sheer amount of potential legal infractions on the books how well versed are our local folks? Do they keep up on stuff? Are they open to handouts or friendly conversation? What's their angle or reason for the approach to begin with? My suspicion was the mag dump. Still didn't appreciate the shock and awe approach as necessary as they probably felt it was.
