I carry the Honey Badger Tanto Flipper (right pocket), and my Surefire Stiletto flashlight (left pocket).
I like to support the local companies, Honey Badger in Irvine and Surefire in Fountain Valley. |

Had a civilian, wicked blade! I was thinking of the matriarch cause of the Emerson wave for the fastest deployment.

That's what I carried on BART when I was taking it (before I came to my senses). Matriarch paired with a signet ring comes out of the pocket very fast and secure. |

The knife he recommends is an Emerson Sheepdog, but that is a very expensive knife. I'd like to see some others that have similar geometry (i.e., a guard to prevent what Grossman describes) but cost less. ![]()

If you want a cheap Emerson, looks into the Kershaw Emerson CQC series. They have the wave and the deep cutout for the index finger, but not the flipper. They are less than $80. |

I'm not sure what you mean by the "flipper," but if you care to clue me in, thanks for that as well. ![]() I'll look into these after doing some reading about them. I've carried an SOG Visionary 1 for some time but I don't like how thick it is at the locking mechanism.

They have the extension on the bottom of the blade that sticks out of the handle when closed. When you flick the tab, the knife opens up. This is California, I'm surrounded by snowflakes, fruits, and nuts. I have gotten gasps when i've snap open a 3.9 inch black blades. We all know black blades are evil. Plus the Ernie doesn't cut straight. |

A family member related dropping one of the Kershaw-Emerson collaboration knives and said it was damaged, making it harder to open. I have not seen the damage with my own eyes.

The flipper is on the bottom of the blade. Many knife companies make flippers. It's just a tab that sticks out through the handle , when you flick the tab, the knife opens up. It also keeps your finger from sliding forward. https://youtu.be/BHSEsxXWWs4 Last edited by Scotty; 12-30-2022 at 11:53 AM.. Reason: Added video link |

Thread has moved on to 'knives' and the CCW aspect has pretty much vanished. Fine discussion, just moved.

As a civilian, if you're pulling a gun, the chances are high that you screwed a bunch of things up pretty bad to be in that situation in the first place. Situational awareness, confidence, avoidance, de-escalation... These are the primary tools of personal safety. The gun is way down the list. A knife isn't even really on the list. If the gun fails, you probably won't have time to deploy a knife.
But a good cutting tool is always good to have for a bunch of non-defensive situations like boxes, packaging, whittling... I recently paid $70 for a nice titanium pocket knife. But a chunkier $7 folder from Harbor Freight is what I carry most days and I prefer it. Every few years, a knife disappears from my pocket -- caught on brush, falling out somewhere. I can lose a lot of knives at $7 each. Seriously, as far as defensive knives are concerned, don't. Spend some time and energy learning how to defend against a knife. A person can take a lot of knife slashes & stabs and stay in the fight. It's not a good defensive tool. But it can be a good killing tool and that's a big problem for you. Take some Krav classes if you can to learn some basic knife defenses. Carry whatever knife suits your every-day needs the best. Last edited by CVShooter; 01-18-2023 at 2:29 PM.. |

I broke down and bought both the Kershaw Emerson CQC5K and the Emerson Mini Sheepdog.
I will say, it seems to me that the Kershaw Emerson CQC5K is a very good value. I couldn't get the mini sheepdog with a black finish on the blade. If I had to make a gun comparison analogy, I would say the Emerson is like a beautiful 3rd gen S&W auto, whereas the Kershaw Emerson is more like a Glock or S&W Shield. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I carry a Zero Tolerance 0350BW, 3.25” blade, or my Microtech Marfione combat troodon 3.8” blade depending on what’s handy. If these come out of pocket somebody gonna start leaking.
But I carry a Leatherman skeletool for day to day bs. I hone my blades myself on wet stones. I taught my sons that pre-cadavers should never see the blade only notice he is losing red stuff he would prefer to have inside him. But then again I keep japanese steel in the truck as well, a wakizashi (medium length katana). I enjoy sharp edge s hit. Guess ya can’t cuss on this forum. When being lazy a pew pew on hip as back up. Different strokes. |
