Default Idaho Falls / Ammon area

Any of you guys around there? I have some friends looking to relocate to that area from Montana.

What are the "need to knows" about the area?

It's a husband & wife with 4 kids (5 - 15 year olds)

They are unhappy in Kalispell, Montana due to a few reason but their number 1 is it is the area feels like a frozen Santa Cruz without the beach. They have been having problems with homeless people in the area treating the neighborhoods like their own personal shopping mall and bathrooms. The warming centers at the parks have made it so they stay around and the crime is going up because of it.

Sound familiar?

Due to me being a Realtor in CDA, they figured I could gather more information from people in Idaho about that region.

The move would allow them to keep their jobs and have opportunities for advancement as well.

It's a normal, safe, clean & no homeless, middle class working community and the schools have a good reputation. Most homes have decent size yards and kids are quite safe here. They do not tolerate drugs here and enforce the laws. Consider it being the opposite of living in Calif. Montana made the mistake of legalizing weed which is the first step to more progressive/woke nonsense coming to that state.

That is a very reasonable distance to Idaho Falls. I'll bring it up when I talk to them next week.

Thanks for the tip.

I have been living in Idaho Falls coming up on 6 years. Have been raising my kids here, and have a friend who's a realtor that can hook them up in the area depending on their needs. UCT is right about Rigby, if you're comfortable with the HEAVY Mormon population. Plus outside of city limits the property taxes are WAY less.

PM me if you need any more info

When we were first looking at properties in Idaho, we were focused on Pocatello and Idaho Falls. Than IF and Ammon. What we wanted couldn’t be found there so our realtor (James Billman) got creative and found THE place just east of Shelley. The property wasn’t even on the MLS! Since then, we’ve learned a few things about Shelley:

Property taxes in Bingham County are less than in Bonneville County where IF is.
Traffic is not a problem. Ever.
Driving to major shopping is at most 20 minutes while obeying the speed limits. There is basic local shopping (groceries, hardware, auto parts, fast food, etc.) within 5 minutes.
At 3am with a passenger in a medical crisis, 7 minutes to EIRMC, the trauma level 2 hospital (go-to for Yellowstone Park; 3 helipads).
As we’re outside the city limits, we can shoot on our property.
Fiber optic is all over the area.
Decent schools at every level.

The bottom line is that at first we never considered Shelley because we thought it was too far away. Two years later, we read about more issues with IF and Ammon that simply aren’t happening in Shelley. The area is growing very fast and containing that growth is important. Residents are responsible and keep their kids in line.

I've worked in Pingree seasonally for the last 4 years and have explored southern Idaho a lot on my off time. IF and Ammon have become one city. My son and many friends live in Rathdrum and I prefer that part of the country. Idaho in general is great. PAX

Come spring they are going to take a little road trip.

They are going to come over to the CDA area first and spend some time here checking it out, next they want to see what the Moscow area is like, and then they are going to go check out IF / Ammon.

As their minds change to what area to go, they are liking the CDA area now so they at least can have a friend (me) close by. On the flip side, work opportunities are going to supersede having friends close by so Ammon is still high on the list for them.

She is in Organization management (whatever the hell that is) and he does tech stuff. He could find work in CDA no problem but with her field she doesn't know where she would find work.

The march goes on, I appreciate y'alls input.

Road trip wise from CDL, 95 south to 84 east to 20 east. 20 takes you to IF They should check out Idaho National Labs along 20. PAX

Been looking at Pocatello and Shelley area. No hurry yet; we'll see how things play out. Really liking Rigby, as we have a close friend there. My kinda place, actually.

Pokey has hills, IF will be your main hub from Shelley (Costco, Winco, Walmart). Rigby has a nice strip, Queen Bee does our annual on our Air Tractor and Desert Air Ag in Mudd Lakes does our Thrush. Rexburg has a nice air museum (Legacy), small but has Bob Hoover's P51, Frank Borman's P63 & a mess of small arms and uniforms. I think they do a monthly pancake breakfast and have a good fly-in around May(?). Covid killed the only gun store/pawn shop in Shelley. Good luck, stay in touch, PAX
