Default ball powder for 6.5PRC and 120gr Hornady CX

Hello all,

Well, I want to try working up a load for my 6.5PRC using Hornady 120gr CX solid projectiles for coyotes. It's California after all and non lead projectiles are all we can use. Can any of you guys recommend a ball powder that might work well? Thanks, B.

Try Winchester StaBall , Hodgdon load data says start at 54.5 g & a compressed max at 61.5 with a 120g projectile ….I’ve never loaded solids so watch for pressure

Thank you, I will get a pound and try it. We have to use non lead core projectiles for hunting here in Cali. So I thought I would try the CX's to see how they work out. Will definitely look for signs of abnormal pressures. B.

I just ordered some. I also ordered a pound of H4831SC as well. But I think I will like the Staball. I really do prefer ball powders. Anyway, I'm rambling. Now to mount my scope and get the old girl zeroed. So looking forward to shooting this thing after having it for nearly four years and no ammo. B.

I have only tried the StaBall in my 6.5C gas gun using converted 308 LCLR brass & 123g elds , 42g shoots a nice sub moa group ,
The H4831sc works awesome with 147g elds in my PRC but that’s a stick powder . You should find the StaBall to work for you in PRC & have it meter smoothly .

That's one of the big reasons I prefer ball powders. I will use it for the 120's and later try the H4831sc for some 140's I have. B.

H4831 will work but I like R26 for my PRC.

4831SC meters great through my chargemaster.
I have used a lot of it in 243 over the years.
It's a short cut stick so it's almost like a ball powder, but bigger diameter balls than most ball powders.

That's why I bought one pound of 4831sc to git it a try. I have not had much luck with extruded powders so I have tended to stay away from them. B.

I have tried StaBall HD in my 6.5 PRC. See the following results. Proof carbon barrel, low round count:

With these results, I'd say it's got limited velocity with these lighter bullets with it already being compressed, however, testing with 143's, 147's, and the illusive 150's will be really fun, I think that's where this powder is going to shine. 120 grain bullets are probably better running in your 6.5CM or similar, kinda a waste on this "magnum" cartridge...
