Today, I was at Turners trying to buy ammo. Provided my driver’s license (federal limits apply) and passport. Sales guy (red shirt) walks to the back and comes back out several minutes later and stated that I can’t buy ammo because my license has my middle initial as opposed to my passport, which has my middle name spelled out. Red shirt further states they won’t even attempt to run a background because of the issue with the names.
I just completed a dros for at a different ffl earlier today and had no issue. In fact, I did another dros about 1.5 months ago with no issue. Additionally, I’ve purchased ammo from various stores on multiple occasions within the last 3 months. Lastly, I purchased ammo from the same Turners location within the last year. I asked for a black shirt and explained my dros, ammo purchases, etc. He stated the DOJ changed the rule seven months ago and that I need to change the name on my driver’s license. So then I left. Question…..is there any validity in his explanation there was a change of DOJ rules from seven months ago and the middle name on my California D/L needs to match my passport? |

Get a Real ID.
Turners is not the problem. Newsom is the problem.

Yeah I recently bought a glock there, went thru all the paperwork, stamped "released" on my docs and final check they found that my new registration was forward dated, not good till the next week, I had to run home and find an energy bill right away, otherwise that glock would be turned over to the Sheriff that evening!

Sorry for your trouble, but is it difficult to understand that official ID should match your birth certificate? Why do people think nicknames and shortened, incomplete names are the same? If your going to be buying guns and ammo in CA you should have your Real ID DL, FSC, and vehicle registration all have your full, true name and the same, current address. Its just how we have to play their games.

Yeah once they stamped "released" on the docs it meant the gun was turned over, not in their possession, but in fact it was, under the counter... I was lucky to find a water bill in my name as I let the wife do all of that stuff. They are very strict to say the least.

First and foremost, thank you all for your opinions. However, I want to know is if there was any validity to what black shirt was saying about a DOJ change in rules seven months ago. I asked black shirt to cite rule or regulatory changes that requires my middle name to match on both, passport and cdl. The OAG websites indicates “The person’s information matches an entry in the Automated Firearms System (name, date of birth, current address, and driver license or other government identification) and does not fall within a class of persons who are prohibited from owning or possessing ammunition….” Additionally, ATF form allows for middle initial only. Just want to know if there’s validity to black shirt’s statement. Again, I have not had any issues with ammo purchases/dros, completed within the last 3 month, with any other store/ffl, only Turners.

The $1 quicky BG check for ammo. Compares your ID presented at counter. With the current data in AFS. If there is ANY DISCREPENCY, the AUTOMATED SYSTEM gives a REJECT. It doesn't have the capability to discern that a middle initial on one data set, is equivalent to a middle name starting with that initial, on another data set. |
