Default $100 Remington 510, Circa 1953

Here's what $100 bought me at a local auction house. I tossed a "one-shot" bid at it just because, but didn't think it would stand up. It did, so I took it home. The letter code dates it as 1953, and it is in excellent shape. I don't need it and didn't really want it, but sometimes auctions get the best of me.

It had a sister, a magazine fed 511, in the same auction. I was bidding on that as well, but someone else really, really wanted it so I let it go.

The Remington 5xx series are solid rifles, and I achieved DE with a 513T many years ago.

RE: 510: Nice score.
I loved mine.
A few years back, I sold it to the local boy scout troop for training the next generation of scouts in shooting sports.

RE: 511: This is the one I learned how to shoot with.

And yes the 5XX series rimfires are a great solid set of Remington products (510, 511, 512, 513 and the 514)... not sure about the 550's though...

Best regards,

When I stripped the wood of its original, worn out finish, it revealed nice walnut on one side and lighter sap-wood on the other. So I made an executive decision and stained it with Red Mahogany stain. That evened it out, and it looks just fine to me.

Thumbs up

Remington obviously had various "TARGETMASTER" 22 rifles over the years.

In 1973 I bought one like this, a Model 41 TARGETMASTER, https://youtu.be/y3JGl7Pu2Gk for $35 and after a bit of friendly haggling. The seller, Dick Donoho, who owned Universal Arms in Paramount, Ca. Agreed to shorten the barrel to 17", re crown, and re dovetail the frnt sight. While I took the stock home and slimmed it down, and shortened it for my 8 yr old daughter.

It now resides in my 32 yr old grandson's safe. And belongs to my Great Grandson.

In todays dollars that's a great price, for a great little rifle.

I have my dads 510 that the neighbor gave him in 1940. A free rifle, at age 12, with ammo and instructions to shoot as many squirrels as he could from their El Toro, Ca farm. I learned to shoot with it at the Eaton Canyon range in the 70s. They are great rifles.

while a fine rifle, the 514 doesn't really deserve to be included on your list.

it was Remington's post-war effort to reduce costs and is less convenient to use. the safety in particular is funky and it doesn't have a loading ramp.

they started off with walnut stocks but by the end went to hardwood.

someone modified the one I have- ditched the Remington barrel and custom installed a micro-groove barrel from a Marlin 81. it shoots very well.

it really is a Remlin, lol.

Similar story here - When my daughter was a preteen and shooting for her DE in Light Rifle, I bought a 511 in a youth stock on Gunbroker. I fitted it fore and aft with Lyman target peep sights and stoned the trigger. After she outgrew it, I passed it along to another parent at the club that had a youngster needing a good rifle.

She is now 27...... and that rifle is one of the few guns I regret selling.

I picked up a 521 JT made in 1947. Most accurate .22 I own. The rifles ugly as all get out but it was free so I can’t complain.

Well - took it for a spin today, and it shoots very well. Here is a six inch target, off-hand at 50 yards. I had to move the rear sight slider a couple notches to walk it into the bullseye, but got it to hold the 9-ring. Not too bad:

You can still see 50yrds? I can barely see iron sights anymore!
I need a .22 day at the range, if the weather ever clears up. My 513T was one of the few with a grooved receiver, so I mounted a vintage Weaver K10-C3 Target scope on it to see what it can really do. Picked up a 341 Standard that was broke and sat for decades, just got it back to form. Stevens Favorite with tang rear and Beech front that needs to be dialed in. By the time the weather clears up, might have this Meriden Model 10 rolling block working, and my Winchester 1890 overhauled to shoot too.

Could a .22 rifle made from the 1950s still be relevant today? I mean, like, it has, like, like real wood.
What kind of tactically-cool .22 rifle uses wood?

I grew up with these real pieces of American shooting. Great find. Send pictures of range time with it.

This rifle would be a good candidate for bobbing and threading the barrel, Cerakoting, and then dropping it into a Archangel stock. Maybe even mount one of those fancy holographic sights and a rail underneath for a flashlight.

Those old .22 rifles made from the '20's through the '50's were surprisingly good shooters. I have had a few over the years that were deadly accurate out to 100 yards. Sadly all have been sold or traded off except for my Savage gill gun made prior to WWII. It is one of the most accurate .22's I have.

very nice! I have a Scoremaster 511 that was my grandfather's. Thing is dead nuts accurate and super reliable. First gun I ever shot, and I love it.

I do believe you got a steal on 510 for $100

Very cool!

Don't feel bad, you are not the first person who bought something they didn't need.

i was on a cheap .22 rifle kick for a while. I was shocked how accurate these were once i get them to the range. now that i am older I use them as trainers for my nephews. I remove the mag and make them single shot.

these are probably some of the better "value" guns on the market
