Its becoming more of a war zone rather than a shooting range.

tires, TV's, 5 gallon buckets of oil, trash, trash and more trash.

Its hard to tell where the drive areas are VS shooting areas

Well it's over. The Tupman spot was shut down by the state on Saturday. Locking gates have been installed at all the access points. This spot is shut down due to the irresponsible behavior of too many shooters.

Bako... so the gates and locks are from the State, and they are the
ones for sure who shut it down? I ask as that was the info
I was trying to find out for sure as well.

I went out a cple weeks ago, saw the posts, last week the gates
where started.

I went out today to see, and they where locked up.

It sucks as you say about irresponsible behavior of too many shooters.

It has become a warzone out there, and just trying to keep up with
minimal cleanup of stuff myself and others, I knew it was going
to be a done deal soon.

unbelievable now these clowns will just go shoot up some other
place. Now I understand why areas are so secret now because of these
people.

New to CG.... great deed folks. Cleaning up is a good thing. No mess from BLM when they see there is a sincere effort to appreciate the land access and use.

I've only somewhat recently gotten into shooting, and am interested in BLM shooting in the Bakersfield area. Since the Tupman "range" has been shut down due to goddamn irresponsible asshats, is there anywhere else in the area we can go?

I find it difficult to get anyone I know to go out with me on range trips, so I'd be quite glad to have a Calgunner group to go with, if anyone goes to a spot regularly. I don't have a truck, but I'd be more than glad to volunteer my time and labor to help with any needed cleanup.

A friend of mine owned that property at the end of Dairy Rd. On your left before the large canal. We were allowed to shoot there whenever we wanted. Property was sold to that hydrogen company for a new plant so it's no longer an option.
I'm fairly new to Bakersfield so don't know of places close by that would allow us to shoot.
I really, really don't like organized ranges. I dislike boneheads going to public shooting areas even more.

New to Calguns net. Got to say it sucks that the Tupman area was closed. Drove by and the gates were there and passed by again recently and it had this sign on the gate now.

This is the gate that's close to the bridge

This is the other two gates down the road

I liked the Tupman area because it wasn't too far from Bakersfield, maybe 30 minutes from my house. It was just fun being able to go out and shoot for free and take my family and make a day of it.

I heard from a friend of a friend that the area was leased for gas or oil exploration so they had to put up the gates to secure the area. But that's just hear say.

If anyone has a spot they like PM me. I would really appreciate it. Like setting up paper targets to shoot my Ruger 10/22 and Glock 17. And of course clean up the area afterwards.

So I found maps on the BLM website. I found a map for the Carrizo Plain National Monument. Here is the link.

http://www.blm.gov/pgdata/etc/medial...access_map.pdf

The other cool thing is that I found a Google Earth file that shows you exactly where BLM land is. I compared it to the Carrizo Plain National Monument Map and it looks like they match up. What I like about this is that in Google Earth you can zoom in and see if these the area is pretty clear before making the drive out to the location. This is pretty helpful to me because I have a sports car so I don't have much clearance. So I can see on Google Earth is there are semi decent dirt roads at the location. Here is the link to that file. This is pretty helpful since it shows me areas close to Bakersfield.

Remember you need Google Earth, and that's free and an easy download. Hope this helps someone.

Unfortunately you are not allowed to shoot in that area.
Quote:
Weapons: Recreational target shooting is prohibited within the entire monument. Public lands within 1/4 mile of any campground, Painted Rock, facility (including the Washburn, Saucito, and MU ranch headquarters), developed overlooks, interpretive sites or pullouts, are closed to the discharge of firearms. Use of replica weapons (such as paintball, airsoft, or war game apparatus is not allowed on the monument. In addition, there is a No Shooting Zone established/marked around Painted Rock and the Goodwin Education Center.

On that map there is some BLM land that lies outside the borders of Carrizo Plain National Monument. Specifically I'm looking at the land to the west/southwest of Maricopa. I wonder if any of that area would be suitable/legal for BLM shooting?

Oh what I meant to say is that comparing the Carrizo Plain National Monument map to the Google Earth file they seem to match. But you're right, there is no shooting in Carrizo Plain allowed. I was referring to the areas outside of Carrizo that are BLM. On the Google Earth file Carrizo is conveniently referred to in a blue color while BLM land is in yellow.

I downloaded Google Earth and opened the file (Super useful!) and found a spot that's some ways up along the river from where the Tule Elk Reserve spot was, it's around 35.340299,-119.51623

There appears to be some dirt mounds perpendicular to the dirt road, and they're within the yellow square that's supposed to be BLM. I wonder if they're high enough to serve as a good backdrop.

That looks like a pretty good spot. Have you had the chance to go out there and shoot? I might go in a week or two.

So I was able to drive to the area but it is gated off. Has No Trespassing signs and the gate is locked. Some other signs look like Oxy owns the property. I happened to be passing by and thought I would take a look before loading up my car with my guns and be disappointed. Any other locations that someone can share would be appreciated.

Oxy sign. Sorry it's not clearer.

Went to tupman and sure enough closed off. Fish and game warden was out chasing people off.

Drove out to a place I knew about out past buttonwillow and the same thing.

So begrudgingly we drove out to 5dogs.

Anyone have a shooting spot they want to share? Shoot me a PM.

I just found this post. Sorry to resurrect it if it was supposed to be dead. (the "clean up" section does not seem to move very fast here) I was posting about "sharing" the locations of your favorite shooting spot, Or making a new post about making a place to post just about shooting spots. WOW did I get shut down. Then I found this that is close to home. Closed, bummer.

What caught my eye follows:

The co-ordinates that SRCBFL posted are 1.36 miles due WEST of an old concrete batchplant-quarry. VERY easy to see with the aerial view.

That is where I shoot and am trying to clean up. It is used straight up as a dump. I mean WHOLE truck/trailer loads have been dumped there. I once found a large pile of cans. Meh. To my surprise, THEY WERE ALL UNOPENED! That was fun! Once someone had dumped a perfectly good little girls electric scooter. I set it aside as I did not have the truck at the time. by the time I got back out there, it had been all shot to bits. Also found a functioning window air-conditioner. Point is it is a mess and not necessarily from shooters. I usually haul out a trash bag or two more than I bring in and now I am shooting steel so I don't bring anything. Yes it is a mess with camper shells, Jetski's tires, stoves, water heaters and tons of other stuff dumped. Nice quiet spot aside from the mess.

The road ACTUALLY ON the co-ordinates is fenced and part of the Elk hills petroleum complex however the site is not fenced or posted and is accessible from the Buttonwillow airport and it's road.

Map shows all.

Perhaps we can start a monthly get together shoot and clean there. It is 5.2 miles from what I think is the original site the post was all about.

Too bad I'm not there anymore.

We ended up having a great time and I met a lot of really cool people.

Good luck with the cleanup!
