Question Placer Sporting club in Roseville

I searched and only one older thread came up. I know this place is expensive. I'm just curious if anybody here has joined. Five bills to sign up and fifty a month. I went for a tour yesterday. They had one class going on and one shooter was just getting started. The place was clean and the people were nice enough. Chris, the gentleman I spoke with, claimed they have 750 members. He was honest and said straight up that he though it was like a gym membership. People sign up, but rarely going. If you stop with the monthly dues, you loose your initiation fee and would have to pay again to rejoin.

It's a costly endeavor, but hugely convenient for me. Since the wife said no way to a new DW Kodiak for my birthday, I figured this would be a nice BD present instead. Lincoln, isn't that far, but this place is just so dang close and easy.

Has anyone caved to the temptation?

I'm surprised nobody else has joined. Perhaps nobody wants to admit that they're paying a premium for their convenience? For me, it's really about the ammo at this point. If I knew I could get it regularly, I'd probably already be a member. As things are now, it's really hard to justify the premium for not being able to use it. Non-9's are becoming so much more attractive in times like these.

The last 'shooting club' in that exact same building, with the same initiation/dues model - took the money and ran. So I am not surprised that people aren't lining up to hand over a big fee just to join again...

And with only 33 yard max range, you are still going to have to go somewhere else to setup new rifles.

^ Exactly, there were some people who got taken for a lot. So same business, same business model, new name, and owner comes on here (a few years back) talking it up but doesn’t address the history of the place...not much of a temptation at all.

I do believe the business model has changed, perhaps only in my perception. The initial owner required a "refundable deposit" or something of sorts. Now, they just call it an initiation fee with no attempt to imply that it would be refunded. Basically, the same way gyms do. I think that's the real difference. Their not saying you'll get that money back.

Paying a $500 initiation fee and $600/ year for a 33 yard range is a lot to pay for the convenience of not driving 15 minutes from Roseville to Lincoln.
What else comes with the membership?

I did manage to get a 10mm. Just not the DW I wanted. I call the new G20 "The Big Ugly". Never been a Glock fan. I'll see if this one changes my mind.

They do have a few minimal extras. Nothing worth mentioning. For me the main attraction is indoor, close range shooting. There are certain close range exercises I'd like to focus on. Closer target placement is main benefit that appeals to me. Well, that and it is a convenient location. Not having to wait on a range master to clear the range. The Gun Range on Watt and 80 is option as well. But the location is a drawback. I'm a bit leery about the area. Although I did get a $100 gift certificate for them for my BD. I'll give them a try sometime during the week before the end of the year. I hear it's crazy there on the weekends. I'm kind of picky about who I shoot around/with.

The Gun Range on Watt is busy most of the time. I don't like waiting outside in lines for indeterminable periods of time. I'll pay for a membership somewhere once 9mm is available and reasonable priced, but not before that happens. How is a membership business model tenable now?

I had a membership with the original range that was in this location before the owner got popped for "bending the rules" a little too far.

The original up front fee was more but the monthly fees were less and ammo was readily available.

On most days I would have the range to myself during lunch break and get to shoot 100 rounds all alone. There were background checks and you knew the people shooting took it seriously or they wouldn't be paying the fees to shoot there. If anyone was unsafe they were removed from the property and never allowed to return. Everything was done with a key fob for access and monitored on camera.

My family has been thinking of signing up and I would join again. It was a nice way to relax on lunch break.

LOL that's an awfully charitable way to refer to identity theft.

FYI I went to this range this week with a friend who is a member. The staff are friendly and the place is clean.

The target mover is a little janky and could use some improvements. There are no sandbags or chairs that I saw, so if you need to sight in a new firearm or optics or sights, not sure exactly how you would pull that off but maybe they have something squirreled away.

Anyhow I would consider joining just to run my pistols and do holster work, if they had a way to spread the initiation fee out over a year or two just to make sure I am not out the money if they close up shop in another 6 months.

But in order to justify the dues and fees for this private range IMO you'd need ammo to come back in stock and reasonably priced in a big way. So for now I will just be an occasional guest.

Sorry to bring this old thread up again. I joined here today. They let me stretch the initiation out over 10 months. I know it's kind of pricey. It's just so dang convenient for me. I hope to get in a least once a week. I'm gonna try and get in tomorrow. Another big plus for me, they allow me to have ammo shipped there.

That is nice they let you spread out the initiation fee. I went again as a guest a few weeks ago. It was nice and the ventilation is improved and the target hangars did not seem as finicky.

But I was unable to sight in a shotgun for slugs, because there is no stable platform to shoot from or even lay the gun down to make sight adjustments in between shots. If you are a casual handgun shooter it is a nice place. But I have too many long guns to sight in and even new optics and irons I want to sight in on handguns, and from what I can see it just isn't happening there. Also it is sort of a haul from Rocklin - they are in BFE Roseville from me. I can get to Dillman faster.

If they ever get bench rests I would seriously consider joining. But it is not conveniently located enough for me vs what it has to offer right now.

I went back today and shot. Having the place to myself was kind of nice and weird at the same time. I think I'm going to enjoy this place. Surely I can't be the only one here who is a member.

I was back for my third trip today. I gotta say, if you can afford it, this is a nice place to shoot. Last week was kind of busy. Almost half the stalls we full when I showed up. By the time I left, I was the only person there. Today, I had the place to myself again. Ammo delivery is another big plus. I'm becoming a big fan of this place.

A target just because. 50 on each. Top left p365, a few close flyers. Top right p2000sk, many flyers going from DA first shot to LEM. Lower center 320 AXG classic. This 320 is such a pleasure to shoot. No flyers. At 7 yds.

This one made me smile. Thanks Jesse. I'm just a rookie compared to most on here. I'm using the 7 yd line so I can evaluate how well my aging, compromised body can handle different kinds of pistols. The p2000sk is already mine but I've only had it out a few times. It was the closest thing I had to compare with the others. As much as I like the LEM. I found it difficult to use while comparing it to the others.

Have you thought about taking a shooting class?

The LEM trigger is not difficult to use. You press it rearward until the gun discharges, just like all the other triggers. At 20 feet you should be shooting a 2" group, 30 feet a 3" group, 40 feet a 4" group, etc.
I've been shooting most of my life. Just not regularly. My interest waxes and wanes. At one point I went over a decade without taking anything out. The length of time being registered here and my post count is representative of that.

I have thought about classes. There just isn't as many options in northern California as there are in the south. I'm sure I'll find something.

Where I struggled with the LEM was in my second shot. I always shot the first round double action. The second shot always surprised me. It almost felt like there was no wall. After that shot, things settled down and came right back into line. Once again, this was evident of my lack of familiarity with this pistol. Overall, I like it. I just need more time with it.

As far as groups that I should be shooting, it is what it is. I'm just over a year out of shoulder surgery. It's taking me much longer than I'd like to get back to where I'd like to be. I've never had any formal training. Just friends and family helping each other out.

That's what a group should look like at 7 yards (minus the flyers). Any smaller and you're shooting too slow.

Dennis, I’m a member at PSC and have taken many classes at the facility from Defensive Triad. They have quite few classes per month. Ask the guys there and they can give you all the info you need. Class schedule is online as well.

Your groups are fine. Don’t sweat it.

Wow... unless they are serving caviar and crackers that's a rip off. The weather is so nice there I was shooting at least once a week at Lincoln except maybe in late December and early January. Here in Utah I just upped my membership at the indoor range (15 minutes away) for $175 for a whole year. The only reason I even have a membership is because it gets really cold here in the winters. Otherwise it would be BLM 15 minutes away.

Thanks, I forgot all about the classes offered there. I see they also have a "Pistol League" once a month. That might be worth checking out as well. I've never attended any shooting classes, comps or leagues.

The defensive pistol league is a lot of fun! It’s free and kind of an informal IDPA/USPSA style course of fire out on the range. It’s run by Defensive Triad as well. Check with them or Chris at the front desk as there may be some prerequisites before you attend just to ensure safety/competency.

BTW, I think you and I may have met out there. I was hitting balls on the golf simulator and we chatted for a bit.

See you around.

Last week, I was talking with Jesse, one of the owners, about my struggles with the 365. We chatted again today. He gave me some great suggestions on getting a better grip on the little bugger. He also mentioned just shooting three shot groups and bringing my target in and marking them. Analyzing what I might be doing wrong each time. These were very helpful.
On a side note, I had to laugh afterwards. I just thought of "jessegpresley" on here always talking about the value of training. It sure helped me today.

I've been thinking about joining PSC for a while now, and my hesitation is similar to what others have expressed in this thread. If they'll let me spread the initiation fee over 10 months like they did for Dennis, then I might jump in.

Any unusual rules or polices compared to other local ranges? I've shot at The Gun Range, The Gun Room, and a few others. I also used to be a member at Sac Gun Club when my office was a mile from them, but we've since moved so I'm never in that area.
