Default Larger BLM Clean Up Tools?

I've been searching for something that would help cleanup BLM trash effectively without bringing in an industrial trash vacuum that costs thousands to mostly pick up shotgun hulls/wads but hopefully shells and trash too. Seen many brass/shell/trash pick up hand tools, but still searching for something a little more handy than a large shop vac + generator.

Does anyone have experience using a shop vac / generator or any of the following on desert BLM land (not at indoor or outdoor ranges):

Ammo-Up Mini for shotgun shells (they have a variety of models down to rimfire, the youtube videos look intriguing, cost is $300+)

http://www.ammoupusa.com/copy-of-18-...hotgun-shells/

any "gold dust collecting device" (I know you can make these from a standard yard blower/vac & bucket) or backpack gas trash vacuum using a 2.5"+ hose such as (this particular one has a backpack frame, cost is $400+):

I would love to buy one of these giant magnetic sweepers from Harbor Freight. Just need a crappy tarp, release over tarp, have a buddy on the other end, lift and pour debris into buckets. Only effective on flat terrain.

It does pick up brass though. I have this one for steel cased ammo http://www.harborfreight.com/17-inch...per-98398.html

Brass ain't magnetic, so even the best magnet ain't gonna ever pick it up, so I'm pretty darn sure the one I linked doesn't pick up brass either.

But you know what does pick up brass? Brass trolls. And there are plenty of them, namely the brass trolls that I go shooting with that reload. Brass is not an issue that I have ever seen on BLM. ****, a brass troll walked away with my spent 7.62x51 the other day while I was setting up my targets during a ceasefire. Best to pick up your brass first, then adjust targets, cause the brass troll ain't gonna git you then.

This "amateur sketch", which I think is quite professional, but that's just my humble opinion, was maybe the first to ever capture the brass troll outside of his regular environment. He bares an uncanny resemblance to another mythological character, can't quite put my finger on it though.. hmmmm...

Oops I meant it doesn't pick up brass. Typo. I save my brass anyway by shooting under a tarp then dumping it into a bucket. Btw Harbor freight has coupons for free tarps too. I usually send my brass troll over there to get me one

That's usually what's left behind & piled up everywhere, steel cases and shotgun hulls. I use this thing that looks like a plunger and it works, but it's tedious. However, it's still better than picking up casings by hand. That monster I linked would be perfect for a flat outdoor location without a lot of vegetation.

Ha, I see now, wasn't sure what you meant. Yes, shooting smart doesn't just mean shooting safely, it also allows for expedited cleanup.

Funk told me his experience with the Ammo-up was subpar. He had to go over the same area 4 or more times to pick everything up. The shop vac sounds interesting but I think it would pick up a lot of dirt and require frequent emptying onto a sieve, although it might prove to be effective at .22 brass as that stuff is a pain to remove efficiently.

As low tech as it is, the proper shrub brush style rake (http://www.walmart.com/ip/16783209?w...tRedirect=true) is a very effective tool.

I like the way you think though 'hoops!

I didn't think the ammo-up was going to work, especially if you need multiple passes and with different sizes for hulls, pistol/rifle, and rimfire.

Still wondering if you can effectively vacuum hulls and trash effectively with a DIY blower/vac with a 2.5" inlet hose. I guess i'll run some through my shop vac and see.

Check out this DIY project...might do this for fun

http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/dr...um-blower.html

my favorite place to shoot is so deep in trash that just getting the shotgun hulls would drop the eyesore factor tremendously. Raking is easy, but picking up a mound every square yard is a PITA.

I think 100% of the gas powered blowers with vacuum have mulching capability built into their impeller blades...can't pick up trash with it as is. the DIY kit above is basically a blower with the bucket used as a "filtration" stage before the impeller. if only Echo would make an attachment...

I tried harbor freight magnet. It picked up steel casings and shot shells. I was surprised that shot shells were magnetic.
sure beats bending over to pick up cases.
The magnet is wand type with handle to release metals.

winchester AA shotty hulls are brass and wont get magnet attraction. Iv been brainstorming a sifter setup that will filter out dirt and rocks probaby have holes about 3/8" on the first layer and 2 feet down another finer sift to pick up pesky 22lr. I have a couple ideas i will draw up sometime this week.
I work in a machine shop at pendleton so im always designing tools and equiptment. Curtis, soon as i come up with an idea(free or very cheap), i will PM you. I was thinking about taking a big shovel and drilling some. 1/4" or. 3/16" holes in it to sift dirt. Just give the shovel a lil shake before you dump it in a bucket. I can try it on a cheap home depot shovel. If it sucks i can weld he holes back up. Haha

Ya, I've drilled holes in buckets for the same purpose didn't work to well. Shovel might be different though, have to try and see. Main thing is getting dirt and rocks out. I was able to dump out a few of those bags cuz they were only a quarter full, but weighed like 50-60 lbs. So I can use them again.

They do make shovels with holes in them, they are not cheap. just google "sifting shovel"

I have some 10 gauge sheet perferated with 3/8 holes that I may try to make something with, wouldnt get all the .22 cases but most everything else.

My friend uses one of these for his yard. I don't know if it would pick up brass, but should get shotgun hulls and other trash without picking up much rocks & dirt. If you're interested I can take some various shells & hulls next time I see him and test it out.

Nothing beats good ol fashioned manual labor. Just get some gloves, trash bags, pick up tool, small rake and 5 gallon bucket. WIth those , one person alone can clean up at least 6 black trash bags in an hour. The magnetic bars with wheels are good for steel brass. The little rollers are ok for brass, but pick up a lot of rocks and other debris. The bigger issue is the large items like pallets, furniture, and electronics. You will need a truck and somehwere to dump these items.
