Default The Red Ryder is Junk

I was excited to buy my son a Red Ryder. We took it camping and it lasted an hour before it broke. Lever moves but it doesn't feel connected to anything. I tried to look for how-to videos and spent an hour messing with it before I gave up. It's not worth my time so it's going in the trash bin. Chinese Made Junk!

Maybe I got a lemon but I won't be buying another one that's for sure.

I purchased it while traveling at a local hardware store, far from home. That means there is no chance of taking it back. I like buying from mom and pop shops and like going to the local hardware store when I'm in a small town. I make it a point to buy something. That time it was a BB gun for my kid.

Live and learn I guess. Next time I'll just buy a hammer or some fishing tackle.

Yeah the ones they sell now are really poorly made versions of what we knew as kids. While they're not too expensive but still that leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Could try a Crosman pump 177 depending on how old/responsible your kiddo is.

That's too bad, my first gun was a Red Ryder I bought back in '01. It taught me how to shoot, and it still shoots to this day (I've kept it around).

I picked up a new production model because one popped up locally on Craigslist for next to nothing. The difference in quality from the Rogers, AR vs. Chinese made is night and day.

If you're trying to stick it to Walmart, be aware that Daisy probably eats the loss. I'm sure Walmart has a "return to vendor" policy that requires that Daisy takes back anything defective, at no loss to Walmart.

Got a Red Ryder for Christmas around 1970 and they were nice looking well functioning BB guns. Left it leaning up against the back of a pick-up and it got bent. Never had another one.

This sucks to hear, I was close to getting one for my soon to be 5 year old. What other low-cost alternatives are there that are considered more reliable?

Heck, back when I was a kid they were considered junk. I don't think I had a single friend that had a working one. We just used them as props along with our cap pistols when we played cops and robbers or cowboys and indians. Since none of them worked, we made pew pew noises when we shot.

Get your kid something better.

I was just going to make a thread asking if anyone knew how the quality of the modern Walmart versions compare to the old ones. I guess this answers my question

I had one in the 70`s and it was great and accurate gun. I saw one at tractor supply a couple years ago and I bought it just for fun. They are junk now. Nothing like they used to be. It only cost $25 so I guess it doesn`t get you much these days

Daisy would still be corporate America. Yes Wal Mart has an RTV program, and if it's anything like Home Depot a lot of stuff is "field destroy"

I have heard that the RR’s are flawless as long as you never take it out of the packaging and only admire it from a distance. Actual handling, working the action, and attempting to load and shoot it seems reckless and perhaps abusive.

I still have mine from around 1991 or so. Was some model with the medallion in the stock. I killed my first million critters with it, and still shoot it in the back yard at rats running on the power lines. It’s been a life long source of entertainment for this simple guy

I bought a Daisy Buck for $18 +tax from Walmart in 2016, it surprised me how good it was, plastic parts but plenty accurate enough for close range plinking.. it isn't a HW30 , but it isn't $350

The Dasiy bb gun I had as a kid lasted a long time and I shot it a lot, my second to youngest nephew broke it 30 or so years later. Have a newer Red Ryder now I got for shooting varmints I don't want to kill and just scare off. It works fine, but not as powerful as my old Daisy was.

Default Decent quality air rifles are really affordable

Not the child’s toy category like the RR, either.

Break barrel rifles far more accurate and powerful can be found at pyramid air.

He's already shot much bigger but a bb or pellet gun is better around the campsite, generally.

4 small pictures at the bottom.

Man walks into gunstore with son.
Daughter walks into another store with Mother.
Man and son try their guns at the counter.
And walk out with two wrapped packages.

Is the Daisy Model Buck 105 any better? It is listed with the shortest LOP. Need something youth sized for my 5 year old.
