Default Buying a car in California, but register in another state

After 58 years in California we are moving to the Florida panhandle.
Wife has good friends there, they convinced us to move there. Anyways, our commute car isnít going. Is it possible to buy a private party pickup here in California then leave the state within a week. Iíll register it in Florida. Thanks

Of course, why not? Interstate commerce is protected under the U.S. Constitution.

Commiefornia tried to ban outside the state vehicles years ago. Other states sued and Commiefornia lost. I bought a used Chevy Pickup from Texas. No problem. You're doing the reverse.

Why u want to buy and ship the car across the country? That’s $1500 shipping fees for a week of use. Just buy in FL

Edit: or are you driving it cross country? That’d be a great road trip!

The cross country drive is fun as long as it is not in the summer...

Just make sure you have any paperwork signed by the seller that Florida requires.

One advantage to buying out of state is, (california dmv) they will tax/fee based on actual amount paid, rather than total price including rebates. bought a car in north carolina when my tow vehicle died. There were several thousand in rebates in the deal and somehow the trade in was deducted from the total price paid used to calculate taxes and fees. Saved alot on taxes and fees on that car.

If you don't need it to haul stuff for the trip shop prices there. You will probably find what you want much cheaper outside of CA.
Knowing CA Franchise Tax Board when FL sends the title back they will probably take the transfer and tax out you should have paid in CA - it will be deducted from your refund when you file your 2021 CA state taxes.

You will owe sales tax. You are a resident of Cali, even if only for the very last day. Ca WILL hunt you down and MAKE you pay.

I highly suggest you buy a car when you get there. You are gaining nothing and also paying taxes to the state of Ca for no reason at all.

Amen to this.....Not only will sales tax most probably be lower, but if you are doing a trade in, you may only pay sales tax on the balance after the trade, not the full vehicle price. I just bought a new truck and saved 1,815.00 in sales tax due to this rule.

THIS ^^

Take it from someone who did the reverse of what you are doing. Decide what you MUST keep, sell the rest, then ship all your stuff to new place/storage. Get a rental for the cross country trip, buy new once you arrive.

He stills pays Ca state sales tax and registration fees. They will not be refunded. It s a stupid concept to buy and move. Only an idiot would do this.

They have calguns in Florida.... it’s like Disneyland, they have one everywhere. Same old URL works in Florida too!

EDIT:

CA will get their money wether they deserve it or not. Had a buddy that bought a class A in Idaho, registered it ins Idaho but brought it to California a little too much and they got him for the sales tax... on $250K

That’s not the same. Regging out of state to avoid VLF and taxes is one thing. Buying and moving immediately after is like a going away gift to Gavin Newscum.

Has 10 days to register it IMO take it out within a few days ca will not know on private party sale the paperwork will get transferred in FL.Sounds easy in this deal buying from a friend

Now if buying from a dealer new or used i can see the problem tax and reg will be paid then.

He has to surrender the CA Title to FL when he registers it there (They may also want the plates). They send it to CA along with the new owner info and then DMV rats him out to the franchise tax board for skipping out on the tax.

From what it sounds like is that people are moving out register their cars in other states and ca has never been informed and still sending renewal notices too. This situation seller can post date the sale so many options when buying private party. I mean seller is letting buyer borrow truck to move to Florida guy decided he really likes it offers to buy it instead of returning it. 🤔
