I've seen this myself, and helped make this happen. And many of these teachers are trying to take care of their own kids at the same time, too.
Agree. My son's teacher is a single mom, just had her first child in December... one of my principals has three children, 4 through 10 years old. As slammed as we are trying to keep our kids working six hours a day, ten weekly teleconferences each, I think we have it easier than most of our teachers.

I don't like asking / recommending / pushing them into trying to manage normal school ops and distance learning at the same time, but frankly I don't see a better way out of this. There's going to be a long adjustment period where in-person attendance is very spotty, lasting until after this thing is behind us. And that is going to play merry hell with planning and budgets.

I get heartburn just trying to think about getting our incoming TK-K students to wash their hands and not crawl all over each other.

The last two people who said something similar couldn't explain what they thought "my position" was when challenged. So what do you mean, exactly?

You have exposed your position willingly.

Perhaps we could examine your previous post that included erroneous child labor statistics. Why would one post this?

You’re an intelligent, educated man, caught up in the political virus hysteria.

I’m guessing you’re a bit left of center

Because, in response to a discussion highlighting the problem with reopening public schools, and how that is incompatible with pat solutions for older Americans to simply run and hide while the rest of us carry on without mitigations, you wrote the following:

That sort of mocking arrogance suggests a deep unfamiliarity with social conditions during the last comparable pandemic -- in specific, a time when concern about child welfare, and especially the working poor, was practically nonexistent.

This is the picture I remember from my US History textbooks. Link goes to an BLS article that covers the history of children as property: "Society viewed them simply as an extra money-earning appendage of the mother or father." That's probably what he's referring to.

and these too. cotton mills (which is what the little girl is working in) liked little kids because their little fingers could get inside the moving machinery to pick out defects. Stories like "The Matchstick Girl" were grounded in a lot more reality than people like to think about today.

Thanks for explaining why you posted that BS.

You do understand that this exposes your political biases?

My grandfather worked firing boilers at the age of nine, because his alcoholic father couldn’t work.

The reason for this is simple: You've arrived at your own conclusions about what to do with this particular pandemic on largely political grounds. Having done so, it is therefore logical to assume a dissenter, one who has reached the opposite conclusions -- or, in this case, even materially different conclusions -- must have followed the same reasoning process, and thus must have an opposite political bias.

This is nonsense. Formally, this is an affirming the consequent logical fallacy (with the potential to devolve into No True Scotsman).

Having gone through many cycles of this kind of discussion, all I really need to observe is that when other participants insist on personalizing the argument, as in your attempt to define my character, this is a pretty clear sign that they've reached the end of their good arguments.

Oh well, everyone wants to fight these days. I guess that's to be expected.

Yeah, that was really common during those times. Alcoholic husbands and fathers, along with the abuses that ensued, were common. Start working as early as age five (how old is the tallest kid in this picture, I wonder?), alcoholic by 20, dead by 36 (life expectancy in 1918 was 36.6).

The only reason why my mother and her little brother did not wind up in the factories much like your father was because of my grandmother, and because of their older sister who worked while not in school. Grandma worked from before dawn to after dusk so that the two younger kids could go to school and not have to work. My grandfather was an alcoholic, like yours, and a gambler as well. Not too many good male role models in the family tree.

You’ve posted prodigiously, and I appreciate your input.

The political element of this situation cannot be disregarded.

I wouldn’t post blatantly political BS.

That’s just my opinion.
