Someone in the room asked Mike Mason, the deputy doing my renewal class two years ago about that. His reply was "give me a convincing reason why you need more than three guns on your permit."

Yeah, lame I know, but that's kind of their attitude about it. His view was a summer gun, a winter gun, and a spare in case you sell one of get one stolen. I know we can make good arguments for having more, not the least of which is we should be able to carry a 50 BMG in our keister should we feel that's what we need per the 2nd amendment... But nothing I've ever heard at SBSD led me to believe there is any avenue to convince them to carry more than three. I don't think a town hall meeting on carrying five pistols instead of three would go over real big.

Compared to a few years ago, and given the COVID, your moving along pretty good. SBSD is doing a great job, and I appreciate that they vet the applicants. The ranks of SBSD CCW holders are a pretty good bunch of people and the process helps make that happen.

Should I give my HR office a 'heads up' regarding the inquiry they will receive about my CCW application? I've worked with the VP of HR and the Director, plus all the secretaries and clerks love me.

I'm just wondering if that's good form.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Yes, definitely give the HR department a heads up, and better yet, company ownership or management.

At my initial application years ago, I worked for a small firm and the HR manager was Lib/Dem/Left anti 2A, so I did not want them to do my paperwork without the owner's input. The owner had the questionnaire pulled when it came in via mail and had it completed and returned outside of HR with no copy in the HR files for snoops to see.

I checked in at the receptionist area and was told to go on over to the employee services area and sign in. I picked up another form to fill out while I waited for my name to be called for my interview. I was wondering why I had to fill out another form with exactly the same information that was on all the other forms. I guess everyone wants a little piece of me.

The actual interview was done by, I'm assuming by the way he was dressed, a detective sergeant wearing a sharp black shirt and a bright green polka dot tie. I'd forgotten it was St. Patrick's Day. He was a pleasant and jovial fellow who seemed younger than my two older daughters. He seemed pleased that I had all my paperwork in order. We did the interview right there at one of the windows in this office. He did not ask a lot of questions and the ones he did were general small talk kind of questions. For the most part he went over all my paperwork, clarifying a couple of things and correcting a couple of other things. In my "general cause" statement he mentioned that this part was excellent (self and family protection) but that part was not compelling (talking about expensive musical equipment I carry in my pickup). He explained that property theft is not a reason for deadly force. I told him I understood that I needed an "immanent threat" and he said that would all be covered in the training class.

EDIT: Just because I like pictures, here's one that was posted to the SBSD Facebook page showing the cubicle farm in the lobby where I did all my paperwork, interview, and fingerprinting. I did not meet these fine officers but my business was conducted at the windows behind that glass partition.

After going through my paperwork and a few signatures the officer sent me back out to the lobby to wait my turn for the fingerprint machine. A few minutes later a nice female officer brought me to the back, asked me to take off my mask for a picture, then proceeded to take all my fingerprints using an electronic imaging machine that was a bit finicky. We made small talk while she held my hand and got the proper images. When the officer was done with my fingerprints she said to head on home and wait for the call. It's going to be months because of the massive backlog in applications. It took almost four months just to get this appointment so I suspect it will be just as long before I hear of the results of my FBI background check. Then, hopefully, I'll be able to schedule their training class and range time, pay the rest of my fees, and eventually get my permit in the mail. I'll try hard to convince them that I'm not a menace to society. Wish me luck.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
The wait is the hardest part! The wait now is actually shorter than it was after the terrorist attack in San Bernardino a few years back, of course the COVID complicated things a bit this last year, but SBSD has persevered and has come up with things like the renewal videos and private range requalifications to make things work. We are fortunate to have the Sheriff we have and the CCW staff too.

Good luck.

It isn't a test/contest.
Go in prepared and presentable.

Are we allowed to have a red dot on the pistol when we take the shooting test?

Don't wear a "The View" tee shirt.

Seriously, business casul dress, hair and beard trimmed for the photo. Don't be late. Have a pen. Listen carefully and answer thoughtfully, and only the truth.

Default Health Records

What do the authorities look for in one's health records and how far back do the look? Or is it only what you report in your CCW app?

Have you even read the application?

I have, the only thing on the app having to do with health is mental illness and controlled substance, but I "assumed" that they also do a background which would include reasons for pain med's which would lead to anything else.

They do not have access to your health records.

If you have a medical condition that requires constant medical care you "may" want to bring it up if you are taking pain meds that are an opioid based pain med. I have a condition known as Degenerative disc disease which does require constant medical care for pain. Though I refuse to take any opioid based pain meds. I only take anti inflammatory meds, some of which are prescription. Since I am not taking any meds that are addictive or are classified as a controlled substance, I did not mention anything to them.

1) background checks do not include health records
2) if you have nothing to hide why are you worried about it?

Hi guys, submitted my app about a week ago, but never received a confirmation email. How long does it usually take for them to send it out? Is it instant? I'm worried i might have put the wrong email address or something.

Did you get an option for an interview date?
Not sure they are sending confirmations.

Yeah I was able to choose a date in July. Only reason I ask is because after I applied there was a prompt that said that if I didn't get a confirmation to call the employee resources phone number or something like that lol. But if we're all on the same boat, then I'm OK with that.

You edited after I replied. Like I said email them.

I think that's all you need.
If in doubt drop a email to the CCW crew. DO NOT CALL!

So did I. I heard all these great things about the process in SB but so far it's been disappointing. In OC it took about 2 1/2 months start to finish.

A year since your interview?
The process during 'normal' times is usually well under 8 months.
Covid has everything fouled up.

Was your OC app done during a Covid pandemic?
During a HUGE up surge in gun purchases?
A surge in CCW apps?

My process was 9 weeks. Granted that was 26 years ago.
It just shows times change, process changes.

Check your Spam and Junk folder as well, you may be receiving automated responses from the CCW system.

Below is copy / paste of the confirmation email I received a few hours after I applied back in September 2020. I received this reminder email once a week, every week, up until the date passed. I’m not sure if their system is still sending out these reminders but definitely shoot them an email like 38 Special suggested to make sure you’re locked in.

This is the email I received every week...

Dear _____________, You have successfully scheduled a ccw interview on 01/12/2021 2:00PM. Please ensure you follow the instructions (On the website http://cms.sbcounty.gov/sheriff/ccwfaq.aspx) and bring all of the required documents, forms, and money orders to the interview. If you have made other arrangements with the department you can disregard this message. You will continue to receive this reminder until your scheduled interview date has passed. This email account is not monitored, if you have questions please contact employee resources. Today marks month 5 now after my initial interview back in Nov, going on month 6.

Has anyone gotten a response from SBSD that interviewed around this time? I know we are not supposed to bother them for 6 months (that's what the detective told me at the interview) so just curious if anyone has had contact with them in the same time period as me.

thanks

Got my renewal letter via email on the 1st.
Did the online classes last Sunday afternoon. Signed the attesform.
West End Gun Club Tuesday at 6 pm - Ding Dang cold! But quick, organized and straightforward.
Today to the Post Office for my money orders, then a cup.of coffee for the trip to turn in my renewal package.

Nice.

I know that they say they look forward to getting back to normal and holding classes in person, but I kind of like the ways things went with this renewal.

I miss the live classes and chatting with the staff (Sarah).
The problem with live classes is you have to put on your pants!!!!!
No sitting there in your jammies.

Just got the call from Sarah to schedule my class!

It looks like it is back in person as I was told that the class is from 4 PM to 10 PM at the office.

Remember you to have to wear pants. No Jammies for live classes.
