Armor protects from some bad things, that's usually why people wear it.

My name is Isaac and I have body armor. Can I be part of the body armor anonymous group now?

Seriously though, I have it but I have never had to use it and I thank god every day for that. Like the guys above said, it is insurance. Just because we have a safe country now doesn't mean that it will be that way forever. If you can get it cheap and can afford it, why wouldn't you? The last thing I want to be thinking while I am laying on the ground from being shot is, "why didn't I buy that $350 set of Sapi plates off ebay while I still had the chance?"

Again please don't take offense, I'm just trying to gain some insight into what your motivation was to spend all that money on LE/Mil type gear if you don't do entries, or patrol in a LE/Mil Capacity.
My motivation is mostly risk aversion. Here are the reasons I own body armor, in descending order of importance/priority:

1. I don't presently feel that my life is in great danger. But if some hoser were to pose a credible threat at some point, I wouldn't want to wait for it to arrive mail-order.

2. When in BLM land, I'm always wearing soft armor at least, usually plates too, including while driving in. Unregulated shooting areas always run the risk that some dork won't bother setting up a proper backstop or will have an ND in the wrong direction. I try to shoot where I can't see any other shooters, but I don't have a lot of control over who shows up after I've already set up. And when you've got a 45min drive to the nearest medical center, it's not the time to risk a sucking chest wound.

3. Post-SHTF would be too late to buy armor, and the areas covered by body armor are really tough to treat with a field medical pack.

Ok...I'm a new believer. Where can I look for a carrier/plates to buy for a decent price?

Also does anyone reccommend a brand or carrier type over another?

Thanks

Personally, being someone who has spent days, weeks, months, wearing body armor, I cannot imagine, nor will I ever, wear it at a public range or class, at home, or anywhere that I am not being told to. Thats stupid. I have spent countless days at ranges, anything from 5m to 800m, in close proximity to literally millions of fired rounds, grenades, 25mm cannons, and have never, ever seen, nor even heard of, any injury caused by ricochet, ND, ect. We wear out plate carriers at ranges, but dont bother putting plates in them most of the time. EDIT: and that is only because RSO's, who are usually civilians or POG's tell us to. A lot of guys just throw on a LBV and hope no one looks closely

I'm glad you did mention the "I want to look cool crowd", because I believe somewhere between 98% and 99% of those who spend their own money on it fall into that crown.
hahaha dang pogs lol pointless to wear it until you get that boot drop in

I will be getting a TAG rampage. I currently have a set of Ceradyne Level III plates with IIIA kevlar backers. I think they will fit nicely. I'll post pics when I get the plate carrier.

Eh, I think they should have named it a "Freefall PC" - I'd rather flare with one of those than have to do a PLF with any place carrier.

This was my OIF plate carrier setup circa 2004 - HSGI Wasatch over a IIIa concealment vest. It was a funky setup but worked really well in the mountains. Could carry a slightly trimmed basic load, radio and bangers and have the mobility to climb walls and chase mopeds. To roll heavy the RAV came out.

Yes, I'm skipping stones across the Tigris River in the fertile crescent.

My discount 5.11 carrier. Chest rig was $12 on closeout, 2 mag shingle $5 on closeout, light stick free. I am no speed, all drag so this is all I need to do classes until I can pick up a US Palm rig.

Taking a glowstick or "chemlight" out of its wrapper is an exercise in futility. There's a reasons it's packaged in a non see-through wrapper. Any exposure to light will degrade the fluorescent chemicals over time. When you go to snap open that light when you really need it, you will get squat.

Well yeah but like I said, no speed all drag so it looks cool which is all the rig is for right now. Until I can add a 6x6 pooch for a medical kit.
