If this is the wrong place, I'll delete the thread or move it.
I have some 1/2" thick AR500 gongs. The 3, 4 and 6" diameter gongs are meant for hunting practice using 145 grain .30-06 rounds at 100 yards. They're suspended from a home-made frame (using plans from Calguns) with short lengths of chain. The momentum of the bullet is more than sufficient to cause the gong to swing back so hard that the chain wraps itself around the top bar, which requires a 100 yard walk after each shot to untangle the chain so the gong is suspended once again. Am I on a fool's errand here. I suppose I could modify the (black pipe) target frame but I'm trying to keep the cost of replacement parts low and the setup time very short, especially when I want to change out a bigger gong for a smaller one.. |

Use a bungee from the bottom to the ground/frame?
Or, similar to above, use a piece of plumbers tape to make a loop that will rotate 360 deg. Last edited by Pofoo; 05-15-2017 at 4:17 PM.. |

Here pics for using 'convery belting'.
Rebar frame. Currently my way of doing steel. https://jcsteeltargets.configio.com/...om=productlist JC steel targets = Jesus Christ steel targets. Their labor force is disabled native Americans from missionary camps.

Jack When your setting up gongs you want everything on the backside of the gong. If you bolt the gong to a frame or stand with through bolts or other hardware the bullets hitting the flat surface will shear off the bolts/hardware. The portable set-up pictured earlier work well and if you can weld you can build your own. If building your own always make them easily assembled/disassembled as they will eventually get hit. When a bullet hits two pieces of steel it will bond them together so a pipe wrench and mini sledgehammer are handy. They sell straps that work well just space them widely to avoid spinning from an edge hit. I hang 118 pound gongs once a month in NorCal and the same happens in SoCal and stuff happens you will never think of until it happens. Wire duct tape hammer leather gloves all help along with some basic hand tools.

The best way to hang targets is with old conveyor belt, DOT strap or tire treads.
Use a piece that's about 1/2 to 3/4 as wide as the target. Weld bolts on the back of the target and use large washers/nuts to hold the belt. You loop the belt over the hanger bar and attach BOTH ENDS of the belt to the target. The belt can take a whole bunch of direct hits without breaking as the bullets pass cleanly through it.
