C&R find
Everybody loves a good find story .... here's my recent score.
I see an ad in local small local paper - old military guns for sale. I can't call fast enough. So I am first call and he says come over 1/2 hour ( tells me that one is a bolt action and other is automatic ). I race over and he shows me a Winchester 1917 and an M1 Garand. I have Garands but the 1917 really interests me. He says $300 for the Winchester i'm all over it. I asked him if he had anything else and he pulls out 480 rnds boxed LC M1 ammo, a wooden ww1 ammo can, and an NOS 1942 dated M1 carbine case. The wooden ammo can had 2 ww2 deactivated pineapples and cleaning kits and other small parts. He wanted $200 for the other items. Very good pricing. I did have to do the transfer at LGS so add $35 to cost. |

Yes, those were really great prices ... more important was that it was a great
find. This kind of stuff is out there, but locating it is a bear. I haven't taken the M1917 out for a shoot yet, with the wet weather and all, but I will soon. |

That was the odd part of the whole thing ... he wanted $1100 for a service grade Springfield.
I sort of politely told him he was a little high on his price, but didn't want to dis him as you can probably understand. If I didn't already have a few nice examples, I might have done it. I'm sure someone came in behind me and took it off his hands. |

Great looking Winchester M1917. I think the barrel is dated 1918 from what I can see in your picture.. That could be original to the rifle as the rifle's serial number dates it's manufacture to April 1918. Any story from the previous owner where he got the rifle?

I do like those M1917's - the P14 (English version) was a popular Bisley rifle when I was a cadet in the UK - great system and as mentioned often over looked.
You found a great deal.

Nice score!
I don't think I've seen a complete 1917 in 10 years for sale. ( Not local that is) I got a sporterized 1917 or something like a sporterized. Missing a bunch of parts. But had main stock, bolt, barrel, trigger. After hours of cleaning paint, varnish, oil, grease, dust, then finding all the parts, it's now a complete m1917. B |

How does it feel to take advantage of an old man?

I picked up this guy about 4 years ago for $300, an Eddystone. The main reason I got it, was the barrel hadn't been cut, and I had some furniture acquired in an estate buy. Still haven't returned it to it's original configuration yet. PAX

The man got what he was asking. Better than a 100 dollar wal mart card.
